97 year old philosopher contemplates his own death

He doesn’t offer any particularly brilliant ideas but it’s a very meditative video. Yesterday, I was talking to my dad about living as an invalid. He was distressed at the state of my grandfather in old age and said to me “When I get to that age, I will stop eating if I become a burden on people.”

When Alexander III of Macedon was on his military campaign he met a sage called Kalanos. Kalanos is famous for a prophecy he gave Alexander, “I will meet you in Babylon”, Alexander of course died in Babylon. What is less well known however is that Kalanos ended his own life by self-immolation because he was lame. He famously said, “It is better to die as an invalid”. When he died, he was reported to have not cried out in pain.

In Havamal, Odin says

A limping man can ride a horse,
A handless man can heard,
A deaf man can fight and win.
It’s even better to be blind
Than fuel for a funeral pyre;
For what can a dead man do?

I have cerebral palsy yet I’m very spiritual. My condition doesn’t desolate my existence but it does make me a bit too philosophical, I often debate these two vorldveiws. Kalanos or Havamal?

Jesus said, "If the flesh came into being because of spirit, that is a marvel, but if spirit came into being because of the body, that is a marvel of marvels. Yet I marvel at how this great wealth has come to dwell in this poverty."

I wouldn't trust anything out of the Gospel of Thomas or any gnostic gospel.

It has zero connections to Thomas or anyone else close to Christ, it's been proven to be a forgery.

Yeah suppressing knowledge, the church certainly hasn't been responsible for this crime against spiritual reality.

And the four gospels the Council of Nicaea voted to accept are “real”?

I respect your insights. However, I think that Thomas is more faithful to the original source. The canonical gospels have way too many complex elements like a highly detailed narrative and complex theology. In fact a lot of the canonical gospels are just theological and christological pondering by the writers. I think of this is evidence of early writers constructing the gospels from some source that was a lot like Thomas.

Also Thomas is not Gnostic, that’s a common misconception. Gnosticism is a theological and christological heresy onto itself. Thomas has no theological commentary aside from perhaps the last saying involving Mary.

I think your Christianity is actually Paulinism. Paul’s beliefs about Jesus.
