We measure things relative to Earth time, dum-dum. It hasn't exploded for us, yet. When science history books are written its not going to say it exploded in like 1420 or some shit, it will say it happened in whatever Earth year we observe it here on Earth.

Imagine, Betelguese went super nova 642.5 years ago and a super sentient space faring alien species living in an area of space which was too close to the exploding star were in effect forcibly evicted had to find another home, all 250 billion of them. They don't have faster than light travel, but do have massive, truly massive deep space faring habitats. They have mastered many technologies we are now tinkering with, so have able to stretch their lifespan to several thousand years. Here's the explanation, moron: when a red supergiant, like Betelgeuse, collapses its density becomes extremely high and that is creating gravity waves. The collapse also packs lots of energy that is released after that by the last stage, the expansion into a supernova.

Almost by definition, supergiants are destined to end their lives violently. Stars large enough to start fusing elements heavier than helium do not seem to have any way to lose enough mass to avoid catastrophic core collapse.
The progenitor for the unusual type II Supernova 1987A was a blue supergiant, thought to have already passed through the red supergiant phase. Much research is now focused on how blue supergiants can explode as a supernova.
