Shitshow is definitely incoming.

CDC Looking to halt evictions using quarantine rules. Now I get that it is not popular, but the jobs are not coming back. And why the fuck didn’t they do this before now?

They can halt evictions but can they halt landlords from abandoning buildings, or sabotage? I worry about arson.
 Quoting: sos

Unfortunately, if the landlord doesn't receive the same protections as the tenants, then s/he faces foreclosure and cutoff of utilities for non-payment. Basically, this eviction protection scheme only works if it runs all the way up the food chain to the banks holding the mortgages. If it doesn't, it's pointless, because the tenants won't get evicted, the bank will foreclose the mortgage and seize the property, and then the tenants get kicked out anyway, plus the landlord has lost his livelihood.

The above. We needed to show it was significantly genetically different version of the virus (Just mutations, does not imply the way it works changed -- Viruses mutate all the time without changing virulence (efficiency/efficacy)) -- to prove it was actually a reinfection. Then again we are at a cross roads.

Re-emergence is hard to prove because PCR tests for presence, not infection. If it is there to a degree that a PCR test will pick it up, it's very likely you are infected or have recently been infected. That said we don't know about persistence of viral shedding (Dead beat virus RNA that does nothing but being pushed out by your system, virus dies and does nothing anymore it's bio-matter needs to go somewhere). So past infections may generate persistent positive results.

The reporting we have on re-emergence is even more questionable now that we know reinfection can occur after 2 months or so (Don't quote me on that time frame, off the top of my head from recent confirmed reinfections) because the virus is often not sequenced to determine it's genome.

I hope that makes sense, ask questions if not. But the proof of reinfections presented thus far has it made it so we have more ambiguity in the data then we had before. For the time being I feel safe rejecting any claim of reinfection without genome sequencing till we better understand the prevalence.

the UK Survivor series is really good. is about a group of ppl surviving after a pandemic. the NO. BLACKOUT starts as a pandemic and goes thru life after as a family journeys out of the city.

i should have added Jeremiah. a series of life after the adult populations are wiped out.

Since Dath and everyone are posting garden stories, I thought I would chime in:

We spent some coin on good compost, got most seeds from Baker Creek (before they ran out), and started w]everything indoors under some special plant lights on timers. We planted all heirlooms, and we are located in a suburb of Buffalo, so you never know what the weather is going to do. Err is the report:

Garlic was put in over the fall, harvested in July and did great! Scapes were removed in June, food processed and frozen in little cubes.

Peas did ok, but some critter helped itself to most of them.

23-ish different types of heirloom tomatoes. They are still producing, I have been cooking some down, and freezing (freezer I ordered in May finally got here a few weeks ago), and cutting and freezing others.

4 different types of potatoes, got blight early, but cut them down to the ground and ended up with about 30lbs, all different sizes.

Artichokes, who knew they would grow here? But they did! Each plant made one big one and had 2 baby Rt I hike shoots off the sides.

Bush beans got some weird disease and ended up mushy...fail

Fennel, made lovely fragrant fronds that I used in all sorts of things, but they never made bulbs. Now it’s going to seed.

Celery, is currently staked up, but no diseases or anything there.

Mini watermelons, we got like 2

Little French cantaloupes, we got about 3

Asian melons, very small, but got 4. They weren’t as sweet as I thought they should be.

Gagootz squash, we got maybe 4, then I think they got vine borers that killed the plants off

Sweet potatoes still in the ground

Pole beans, harvested at least 30lbs so far, have been seal a medaling them with little pats of butter and frozen. These are true heirlooms passed down from my family. One section of them had weird mis shaped beans. I don’t know what that is all about, but not using any of that for seed stock. The rest came out great.

Some weird bonus squash that we are yet to identify. We think it’s a white squash that didn’t come up last year.

3 different color beets did GREAT! I was making beet salads with fennel fronds and vinegrette mmmmm

Plumb tree didn’t make any this year (that happens sometimes)

Apple trees made apples, even after a Gypsy Moth invasion. I was out there with a blow torch frying them for a few days. Toasted caterpillar anyone? Apples look just OK ::shrugs:: will pick some and dehydrate them, possible make some apple sauce

Pear tree made a bunch of pears, but they are mis shaped as well. That screams of incomplete pollination. I raise mason bees, for pollination, I don’t know what that is all about.

I had a pretty good bumper crop of wild black raspberries this year (Black Caps). Picked a bunch of them in July, cooked them down, saved the juice to add to cocktails, kept the hulls and suck, put them in a jar with vodka to infuse. I do this every year, and that is my Summer vodka for next year. Sometime I do vinegar as well for salads. It’s delish.

Now we are planning the Fall garden and getting the garlic seed ready to go in next month. Still waiting on a tractor that I ordered last month. No delivery date yet.

And that’s my report.

This winter is going to be studying the gardening book Darth recommended and go from there.

Thanks again everyone, I so enjoy and appreciate all of you!

A big part of the problem is that we have a very hard time to simply observe the presence of viral material, let alone find out where it is (Biopsy -> PCR test is biased to those whom die, can't poke about in the living). So the entire of concept of knowing as we would normally accept pretty much goes out of the window.

It's kind of like moving to a new planet and having a thermometer with a 50C margin of error, we need a lot of readings to make sure that we know the actual temperature and the living conditions are safe. Science has come a long way, but viruses not so much. We can't cure the flu or a cold, and any vaccine will probably work in the same margins.

Up to 4 Months...sometimes?

Humoral Immune Response to SARS-CoV-2 in Iceland

Our results indicate that antiviral antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 did not decline within 4 months after diagnosis. We estimate that the risk of death from infection was 0.3% and that 44% of persons infected with SARS-CoV-2 in Iceland were not diagnosed by qPCR.

don't forget Mother Nature does things in circles. good and bad years with crops occur just like the weather. apples muight b great this year amd have stunted growth next. same with pests and the plants that are attacked. if u had bad yields this year due to pests, next might b better or the year after.

mother nature has lots of these/ like mice 1 year, fox the next.snakes, then skunks.

pick up a good herb book. some do help keep certain pests away.

legumes such as beans and peas will add nitrogen to soild to help corn.

Oopsie!

Florida says it is cutting ties with Quest Diagnostics after the company failed to report nearly 75,000 COVID-19 test results, some as far back as April. It includes 3,870 positive cases.

That's bad news. They run in excess of 20% of the tests in, and have some of their biggest labs in Fl.

I love some of these threads.

We have been discussing food issues being a serious consequence no matter the path of the virus....since February. But the newest hoax is the planned food shortages. And they are just now suggesting to stock up.

This is insane.

That's like I posted earlier. Almost everything is backordered, not available, or the que is very long. I ordered more, even though I have to wait for it. I just hope it actually gets here.
 Quoting: Texan Buckeye

How long of a backprder? And if not shipped in a week.... cancel and go to plan b. Start plan b now.

Especially before the canned meats are gone. I have been slowly bringing those into the home since April.

Why is it throw only no take, with dogs? Why?????? How the hell am I supposed to throw if I don’t take the ball. Fuck. I need more tennis balls. Thanks.
 Quoting: CleverCreator

No, it's ok. I've got a good stock build up already. I just wanted to add to it. I had ordered canned shredded turkey and pork from Lehmans and we tried the turkey. It's REALLY good. I just wanted to get extra because we DID like it so much. I was surprised it was sold out so quickly, that's why I ordered anyway. They've always been really good about getting orders out, and they don't charge until it's shipped.

TB, pleasanthillgrain.com has cases of Keystone turkey and pork in stock!

Well fuck. Looks like I need to quit slacking on those orders I need to place with the major supermarkets.

I've been managing my supplies very well, only using a few items here and there so been lax about stocking up even more like I have been since Feb. Instead I've been indulging myself and laying off the doom which has really helped my mental state.

But the last few days I just have this horrible I need to pick up the pace and start focusing on preparing for winter STAT.

Guess that feeling is justified if the masses are going to start waking up......thats really the first thread on GLP since this has all started about warning to stock up and things being taken semi seriously.

All b/c they blame it on being planned...not b/c of the supply chain issues.

Shitshow is definitely incoming.

CDC Looking to halt evictions using quarantine rules. Now I get that it is not popular, but the jobs are not coming back. And why the fuck didn’t they do this before now?

[link to godlikeproductions.com]
 Quoting: CleverCreator

 Quoting: darth

Darth, one of the few crops of mine that made it was Molokia/Egyptian spinach/jute. Not one hole in one leaf from bugs! You might want to try it next year as you had good luck with okra and it is in the okra family. The stems, being jute, make good compost, too.

Another crop you might want to try is one of my favorite legumes, Moth/muth/ Matki. It is very drought resistant and is grown in hot desert areas.

A two pound bag of Moth is cheap on Amazon and as it is grown in India it should have a very high germination rate as they sun dry their legumes instead of cooking the life out of them like Mexico does with their bean exports.

I’m expecting the public will never be told if the infection lies dormant in the nervous system like rabies does - unless/until such a time it could be used to institute mandatory vaccinations.
 Quoting: sos

 Quoting: Dutchy20

Not to mention they aren’t even looking for it in the autonomic nervous system as far as we know.
