What do you think about Virginia Dutchy? Their curve doesn't look like anyone else's.

They seem to be having a hard time shaking this bug.
 Quoting: R. Wordsworth

Was looking at that earlier along with DC and Maryland. It's like it's just endemic there now. Slowly chipping away at the population @.01% p/d.

Hospitalized currently is pretty stable at ~2.5-4% of monthly cases. The testing is stable and (almost) always below 10% pos%.

It will be interesting to see when that will change, seems like a decent control compared to the rest of the US.

Seems it was packaging of Ecuadorian shrimp.
Hmmm..maybe China should check their own packaging facilities and fishing vessels.

Coronavirus found on packaging of Ecuador shrimps in China: State media

The coronavirus was found on the outer packaging of frozen shrimps bought by a restaurant in Wuhu city when local authorities carried out a routine inspection, CCTV, China's state television, said.

so the virus is in the plastic sheeting. this comes in a roll, made from recycled materials in CHINA.

is the virus surviving longer with no oxygen and airflow? if the virus is in the air where these plastic rolls are made,it is then sealed inside the roll.if it had been the outer layer only, they would not have found it at all.has to be inside the layers. unless CHINA is hand rolling, these are made by a machine.

so 2 points of contact needs researched-the survivability of the virus in an airtight environment. and how saturated was the air inside this roll factory? this does not bode well for the world.at least now u know how it got into our meat plants.

We know that viable viral particles can survive in the air. For them to remain viable in a pocket of air is not an unreasonable assumption. It's not like they are going to use all of that air and suffocate. So it's a matter of can they remain viable in the time between when that pocket of air is sealed and when it's unsealed. Since the highest length of viability I've seen is 72 hours, my assessment is breathing the air from one of those plastic air bags used in shipping is less dangerous than handling the exterior box it came in.

Well, let's see...

We have a year's worth of food stockpiled.
I can hunt, trap, and fish.
Raffette has her garden.
We're on well and septic.
We have generators and solar panels.
I am capable of and perfectly willing to use lethal force to protect all of the above.

200 years ago, people were able to take care of themselves without home deliveries, without running water, without food processing, without electricity, without Internet, without a Wal-Mart on every corner, etc.

And people still cared and tried to keep the world going. Probably even more so back then than now.

You have a good heart, Halo, and I admire your willingness to risk your own health to save others. I was on two accident scenes myself today. But at some point - and we're not there yet - you have to take care of yourself first or you will be unable to take care of anyone else.

With all of that being said, you be YOU. Not what I or anyone else tells you to be. I just don't want you bogging down thinking that it's all hopeless, because it's not. It's just a curve ball nature has thrown at the planet, and the human race will survive it, even if you and I don't. Trust me on that.

hf
 Quoting: Riff-Raff

Thank you for this. I'm stressed to the max and with no end in sight it is exhausting. Some days it feels hopeless and others it feels like fuck the world we're going to win this.

I don't want anyone to think I'd ever harm myself or completely lose my shit. I just need to ask the questions in my mind to people who can rationally explain things to me. Down here it's all, "Oh, it's fine, everything is fine and we'll be past this in the spring". When you bring up anything different people shut down.

I need a vacation.
 Quoting: Tarnished Halo

I don't think anyone in this thread has any illusions of being past this in the spring, except for Wordsie, and I make allowances for him due to his obvious advanced age. (Just kidding, my friend!)

Their is an emotional roller coaster for every victim of any disaster. The problem here, as mentioned in an earlier post, is this disaster is unfolding so slowly that some people can't even see it, and it's an ongoing disaster with no immediate end in sight. So it's a very rough roller coaster to ride.

The trick I use is to remind myself that this roller coaster is completely normal. I just need to remember that we are very fortunate to have been aware of its approach as early as we were and because of that fact, we are prepared to ride it out if the worst happens. There are millions of people who are either unwilling to prepare, or incapable of preparing for even a small disaster, let alone a global one.

To borrow Uncle Doom's favorite phrase, you made it onto the Ark. Don't panic because it's raining.
 Quoting: Riff-Raff

I don’t recall UD saying we made it onto the ark. But rather prepare as if you are the 3rd chimp running to the ark.

I'm thinking establishing a pre-determined amateur radio frequency might be a better idea, since travel might not be an option for a lot of people, and it might not even be safe.

You don't need a license to purchase an amateur radio, just to broadcast on it. However, there is an exception to that rule that says anyone may broadcast on any frequency in the event of an emergency. I think the collapse of civilization as we know it qualifies.

Any other hams out there want to chime in on this?

Mrs Doom has been busy.

Three things of note: when sprayed onto a test article that was wrapped in industry grade plastic and frozen in an environment water ice was allowed to form?

17 DAYS later, on thawing, the virus was not only able to reanimated in vitro, but the thawing process sped up replication as the stop/go switches were thrown and the virus went from its low and far survival mode and into its acute attack stage.

This virus knows when it is under attack and acts accordingly.

Point 2: It breeds inside water with even a small bacterial load within it. Where ever you have a legionnaires or other such risk say inside ducting and pipe work on aircon? This will be there. Vehicle INTAKES included.

It is why Chinese military are carrying out twice daily hypochlorous acid dry fogging on all vehicles travelling through infected zones.

Point3: China is a at zero war stocks. That's it, done. And Wuhan is STILL missing 4 MILLION people.

I would never say that. According to that handy-dandy chart, looks like 6 days maximum for 99.99% viral decay, and that is highly dependent on temperature and humidity. Only 12 hours for 50% viral decay. That's based on 74 degrees (F) and 50% humidity.

I still think inhaling the air from that one single air bag will not result in an infection.

Best cup of coffee I've ever had was sitting at a special forces outpost in the hot jungle of malaysia...sitting there sweating while drinking a cup of cafe tarik and smoking a cigarette.

Almost better than sex. *almost*

Well that explains how you managed to make it past the 12kw laser grid protecting the time machine... not even the doppelganger Wordsworth made it past that one.

Oh yeah I forgot to tell you guys... this timeline is back to it's proper number of Wordsworths.

I understand the seriousness of the virus and understand it 's in it's early stages, but I fail to see the evidence for mass extinction?

Just being level headed about this, not sure whether you would understand that?
 Quoting: The Gent

I agree with you. I don't see it as a mass extinction event.
 Quoting: Nefarious Libertine

define mass? not all not total. a majority? or just a high quantity? the answere matters.

25%-<2 billion time frame?
50% 3.5 billion worldwide. lets say SA, AFRICa, and CHINA counts for 2 billion. u are now at 25% before any other couontry is added.

my projection way back in JAN BEFORE THE WORLD LOCKED DOWN is 1 billion in 3 years.both directly and indirectly caused by the virus. this also assumed the lights would stay on.

is my # enuf to b mass extinction? at what # do u think society collapses?any clue?

if u must work all day to find food, water, and firewood for your family to survive each night, does it matter if we call it extinction, pandemic, reset, etc?
 Quoting: JAZZz50

The word "extinction" already has a definition: It is when the last of a species dies and there are no more of them.

A "mass extinction" is when this happens to multiple species at roughly the same time, which really does not apply to what is going on with this virus.

What will happen with this virus will not be an extinction, but a reduction in population of the human species. How much of a reduction is up for debate.
 Quoting: Riff-Raff

Reduction until extinction?
Jury is still out on whether more than one species is impacted.
Timeframe of “roughly” in terms time can be a large span - relatively speaking.

And Wuhan is STILL missing 4 MILLION people.

plz plz ask your wife to check the survivability of the virus in an airtight environment such as inside plastic wrap rolled up. thx u

Or those air filled packets that look like small pillows that they use for shipping.

Even if they use an air compressor to fill them, isn't that just sucking in surrounding air thats in the room?

If the internet goes down, we need to have a meeting time/place/date. Like, in the smokey mountains with certain coordinates. Somewhere remote, but accessible.

Imma need y'all to get on that since I've never been there!

Fine .... Raff. I failed semantics this morning. Not enough coupfee. I mean coffee.

Definitely a CEE.... and a mass extinction for some cultures. And definitely a bottleneck for most of humanity.

Unknown after that.

It’s ugly. But here we carry on.... until the internet is gone.

 Quoting: Riff-Raff

Would have to be the 160 meter band given our wide geographic spread, which would require a bit of know how on the part of the user aside from buying some gear.
