Stricter restrictions as Netherlands prepares for 5,000 daily coronavirus infections

The Netherlands can expect five thousand new infections of the SARS-CoV-2 novel coronavirus every day by next week, and because of that the government will implement stricter new restrictions on society which take effect on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Health Minister Hugo de Jonge introduced their updated plan on Monday to combat the second wave of coronavirus infections, and a five-fold increase in hospitalizations in less than a month.

France: 4,070 new cases

Decrease in new cases by 23% from last Monday (5,298)

So that's UK and France reporting fewer new cases than last week. Spain's new cases up only slightly, but they have a big reduction in hospital admissions.

Looks like all these countries have reached their second wave peak.

Every country will have a "little peak" with a very low death count, then cases will drop, as seen in evidence.

This was not quite a second wave per se, but rather the leftovers of the first.

Christmas trees? Now? Ok, that's official doom, in my book.

I'm a grumpus, where holidays are concerned. I love the spirit of Christmas, but hate all the commercialism around it (and all holidays, for that matter.) I appreciate that they're important as a way of marking time, though .. and I loved Christmas as a child ... so I definitely understand why people with kids make a big deal about it.

We usually get some pine branches and do some minor decorating, and make tasty things that make the house smell good (like mulled wine or spiced cider) -- but that's about it.

HNRY --- do you have a link to that article? I have read articles (reasonably reputable ones) mentioning the overlap with SARS and HIV... but don't recall seeing Ebola. I'm a "go to the source" kind of person, and would really like it if you could post a link.

Also, any info on the furin cleavage site having overlap with cobra venom and rabies ... I'd like to add that to my list of articles, too.

For some reason, science is one thing that does tend to cheer me up.

TNX for finding that.

The article I remember said 12 (or so) scientists that got some of the first good samples from China claimed it contained RNA from SARS and Ebola AND HIV......

 Quoting: Hnry Bwmn

I don't remember Ebola ever being part of the genome. I remember some Indian scientists that came out very early claiming that 4 HIV protein sequences had been artificially inserted in with SARS. But that report was buried very quickly. That's been floating around since February in one way or another, some people claiming it has to be genetically engineered while others claim it could happen in nature.

Coronavirus: New global test will give results 'in minutes'

A test that can accurately diagnose coronavirus in minutes will dramatically expand testing in low and middle-income countries, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said.

The $5 test could transform tracking of Covid-19 in less wealthy countries, which have shortages of healthcare workers and laboratories.

A deal with manufacturers will provide 120 million tests over six months.

The WHO's head called it a major milestone.
