London Mayor Sadiq Khan has declared a major incident and warned the capital will run out of police officers, firefighters and NHS workers due to rapidly rising cases of the Omicron variant forcing thousands of front-line workers into isolation.

Mr Khan made the decision in light of mounting Covid cases and hospital admissions in the capital, alongside staff absences going up 'by massive levels'.

He said: 'The surge in cases of the Omicron variant across our capital is hugely concerning, so we are once again declaring a major incident because of the threat of Covid-19 to our city.

'The Omicron variant has quickly become dominant with cases increasing rapidly and the number of patients in our hospitals with Covid-19 on the rise again.

'We are already feeling the impact across the capital and while we are still learning about this variant, it's right that London's key agencies work closely together to minimise the impact on our city, including helping to protect the vital vaccination programme.'

It means there will be closer co-ordination between key public services in responding to the situation.

The mayor previously declared a major incident on January 8 due to the rapid spread of Covid-19 and its impact on the NHS, but was able to stand it down on February 26 as case numbers fell.

Mr Khan also called on people to come forward for their boosters and insisted to those who had not had even a first dose that it is 'never too late' to get a jab.

Omicron is now the dominant coronavirus variant in London, with figures published by the UK Health Security Agency showing that 80.8 per cent of a sample of detectable cases in the capital from December 14 and 15 were found to have S gene target failure (SGTF) - a way of detecting the likely presence of Omicron.

As of tomorrow, almost everything in the Netherlands will have to close. For many northern neighbors it means a meager Christmas, without visiting restaurants, cafes, museums or other cultural institutions, and also without shopping. A hairdresser's visit is no longer an option, just like other non-essential contact professions: for example, beauticians and masseurs have to close their doors.

The standard for home visits goes back to two people. A maximum group size of two people also applies outside.

During the holidays, the maximum indoor and outdoor group size will increase to a maximum of four people from 13 years old. However, there will be an exception for the parties: then the Dutch are allowed to receive four people.

All education and out-of-school care must be closed until at least 9 January. On January 3, the Dutch government will decide whether education can reopen after January 10. Primary schools would already be closed until January 9 due to the Christmas holidays. For higher education, the Christmas holidays were planned until 3 January. Out-of-school care must also be added.

There will be an exception to the closure measures for essential items and services. For example, supermarkets, bakers, drugstores, pharmacies, banks and mortgage lenders may continue to operate in the coming weeks until 8 p.m. at the latest. Pick-up is also possible in restaurants.

this is christmas in my city Antwerp Belgium this year...

almost nothing to do ...normally its full of people..



this year its like dead....normaly there are thousands of people running there and tourists from around the whole world visiting antwerp for its cosy medieval sphere...

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Monday that 73% of the new COVID-19 cases detected in the previous week were from the Omicron variant, identified just a few weeks ago by South African scientists.

The variant has quickly displaced Delta as the dominant strain in the US, which has reigned supreme since the summer. Both variants have evolved to be more infectious than previous variants of SARS-CoV-2, with Omicron containing an exceptional number of changes to its infection tool, called the spike protein, making it a "variant of concern" for the World Health Organization (WHO).

The WHO revealed on Monday that Omicron spreads even faster than Delta and has the ability to penetrate the immune systems of people who have previously had COVID-19 or been vaccinated against the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

In many cities hospitals' intensive care units are overloaded with patients who need emergency care, including those with the Delta strain and non-COVID-19-related diseases like cancer or heart disease. In many hospitals few beds are available in anticipation of the influx of patients with the more contagious Omicron variant, the news outlet said on Sunday.
