And the coronavirus task force (Azar, Redfield, Fauci, etc.) did indeed make some big announcements today, like a national emergency, mandatory quarantine for certain travelers, travel bans for certain foreign nationals, and that the test is unreliable.

I think they go back to work on Monday last I heard...if they all show up in Beijing and Shanghai, maybe crisis averted or crisis starting.

My aunt has a PhD in biology, so I sent her the PDF of the paper written by Indian scientists claiming that the 2019-nCoV virus was engineered due to 4 different markers of HIV sequences found in the virus genome (the one that ZH got their Twitter account suspended for posting). I asked her to read it and send me a one-paragraph summary in layman's English along with her opinion. This is what she sent me:


They believe the inserted sequences are "not fortuitous," but that does not equate with "engineered" (although it does not rule that out). "True" evolutionary change requires chance changes/selection to natural evolutionary pressures. Those would be "fortuitous" changes--good luck for the mutants. But let's say that some fisherman catches a young fish in a river with the HIV sequence and throws it into a fish pond where he is doing fish farming. Then he catches one with the SARS CoV gene, and he throws it into the same pond. Both fish are out of their natural environment and they wouldn't have bred in the river (some species of fish are genetically virtually identical, but some are top swimmers and some are bottom swimmers, so they never interbreed in their natural habitats but will if put in a breeding aquarium or in a shallow pond). In our hypothetical case, the new 2018-nCoV could have resulted from their interbreeding, but since it wasn't a result of natural environmental changes, it might not be called "fortuitous." The authors don't speculate on what might have contributed/caused the "non-fortuitous" changes, but it might be the kind I tried to explain or it might be engineered. My concern about the latter possibility is that there were differences in the sequences (and given the rate of infection, I don't think those changes would have appeared yet). Another reservation is that it apparently started in a fish market, and I seriously doubt that Chinese fishermen know how to engineer genetic modifications.


So the paper is legitimate and has the potential to be true. Given her last two statements, plus the fact there is a virology institute in Wuhan, I am leaning towards this virus being engineered and not naturally occurring.

OK... time for tonight's "Prepping with Wordsworth" segment.

Everyone is clamoring over masks and bleach, but here's an item that could be much more valuable if society breaks down.

A hand saw. Think about it, even if you have a chainsaw them little bastards are fuel-thirsty... you're gonna run out eventually. Or rake the blade on a rock, or it breaks down.

Either a regular one designed for lumber, or better yet a two-man saw designed for logging work. I have a two-man saw from the 1800's that was in my last house when I bought it, sharpened it up and it still works great!

If things really get bad, you're gonna need firewood both for heat and for cooking. Taking down a tree with an axe isn't that bad, but how are you going to cut it to length so it can be split?

I'm actually thinking of buying an electric chainsaw, I have a small solar battery system which would run one long enough to chop up a tree.

And also along those lines, a good file is an important tool to have if you aren't the handy type with a garage full of one of everything... can be used to sharpen other hand tools, or fabricate small items to repair other things.

Speaking of fires... another item that is a must are lighters. If you've ever read the SHTF blog, written by a guy who survived the worst of the Serbian conflict, a dollar store multi-pack of shitty lighters would be worth more than it's weight in gold when the shit hits the fan... they were like a form of currency over there.
