Prof Jenkins said it would be “astonishing” if smokers were not at greater risk of Covid-19 than non smokers. And he said there may be a link between high smoking rates and severity of the disease. “China has extremely high rates of COPD and it also has high rates of severe pneumonia. In this particular coronavirus 15 per cent of the Chinese population who have been infected have severe respiratory disease and around two per cent have died - in the rest of the world the disease doesn’t seem to be as bad. In fact, smoking acts as a lung protectant in these cases - and especially in areas where there is high atmospheric pollution such as places like China. This professor also, obviously, missed the boat on the role smoking played in those that survived the black plague - which was another wide-scale adaptation to a changed Earth environment. Vapers are already starting to die from forms of pneumonic plague as they've primed their lungs for over-intake of microbes, bacteria, and particulate toxins...whereas smoke causes the lungs to dry and mucus layers to form to trap those same microbes and particulates before they can embed into the lungs.
