In fact, smoking acts as a lung protectant in these cases - and especially in areas where there is high atmospheric pollution such as places like China. This professor also, obviously, missed the boat on the role smoking played in those that survived the black plague - which was another wide-scale adaptation to a changed Earth environment. Was getting lungs with increasing mucus production. Being clear I thought it a good thing. I'm a heavy smoker and roll my own. I won't spend $4 a pack for even cheap packs of commercial smokes. I've been spraying mist of "Thieves Oil" as I breath in deeply and quickly. Hold it like you would pot.
My lungs are improving vastly every day.
