What is troubling is that we know that we are being lied to by the people we are supposed to be able to trust to tell us the truth...
I understand, they want to avoid panic, or rather to delay the onset of societal breakdown. And that is all well and good. But at some point, they're going to have to come clean...
And then, what?

Then everyone dies (unless you're a prepper living in the woods) They'll never come clean, doesn't work that way. They will be long dead and the skeletons of their ghosts turned to dust before they ever came clean. They'll have robots telling us to keep calm and don't panic, proceed to the nearest soylent green factory in an orderly fashion if they have to and they have no one left alive to tell us. Dude they've been lying to us since that first juicy bite from the apple.
