The neighbor I was in a bitchy mostly wordless war with (we exchange mean glares) - over her being overly social and spending time outside next to the shared main entrance at the beginning of the lockdown - is now inside and coughing.

Not sure if she's sick or if this is just her latest psychological tactic in our catty showdown.

Brahmans do well here, but they are beef cattle.

Sweetheart is preggers by a Zebu bull (according to the guy who sold her to me), so I will get a half Zebu/half Jersey calf.

The Zebus are related to Brahmans, but not so aggressive.

However, Zebus are not known for good steaks, tough and not much taste.

When I started I did not know that. There really is a difference in breeds.

Zebus can be good for milking, but do not produce like Jerseys. If I get a heifer calf, we may keep her.

BTW, skeeter population is down about 95% today.

There was some AC worrying about my exposure to Malathion.

Back in the 1990s, they sprayed a lot of Southern California with Malathion nightly to kill the Mediterranean Fruit Flies. Billions in crops were threatened.

IIRC, the head of the California Conservation Corps went on live TV and drank a pint of Malathion to prove it was safe.

At any rate, the skeeters are more dangerous than the chemical since we have West Nile, Zika, etc. here. Skeeters gave my dogs heart worms as well (I always wonder why humans don't get heart worms. Maybe we do).

Man has been breeding domesticated animals forever to fit into different niche purposes so it’s wise to pay attention to our ancestor’s hard work and guidance even as to which thrives where. Tough meat can easily be made tender by pressure cooking and, of course, pressure canning which takes longer. It might be that jerseys can’t take the heat where you are. The one that used to live up the road from me never stood up any time I ever saw it in the heat of the summer.

This is one of my sorrows with what has happened to all the wonderful diversity of things like wool which almost all the wonderful breeds with the best wool have been left to become endangered species because they don’t work well with automated processing machinery.

And that’s one of the reasons I stick with heirloom seeds for the garden even though they aren’ t usually as easy or productive to grow. Ok I’m off my soapbox now. :)
