I did find my inhalers after too long hunting in the house which is challenging when you cannot breathe well. I bugged out of my office in January and they were in my work bag. Admittedly, I became complacent. I won't do that again.

I have asked our local public health repeatedly what their definition of 'recovered' is and I never get an answer. That doesn't surprise me as I have worked with them over the years as a consultant.

In epidemiology, we have to be careful making conclusions about findings when there hasn't been "time to detect". I am exhausted trying to explain this point regarding COVID.

I suspect after this winter everyone will be familiar with the term long hauler.

Oh some days I am happy to be working very little right now. It's bad for the pocket book but great for my blood pressure.

You're right .. it's an interesting phenomenon to watch... and there are plenty of people with Ph.D.s doing research on the psychology of internet trolling, "hell hounding", etc. At some point, I may dig into that research a bit.

Gent --regarding the article you posted -- yeah, schools should not be trying to open, in my opinion. Teaching online is a lot of work, and a very big adaptation to make... but opening schools in person is going to be a disaster. It seems that the only real solution is to move to home schooling and online education, for the time being.

It seems we're in for the long haul with this pandemic, and the sooner we can adapt to that, the greater our chances of coming out the other side some kind of intact as people, economically, and so forth. It sucks, all the way around ... but trying to open in person is actually making things worse, and spreading this disease further.

The astrological warning was interesting, CC. I actually watched it once before, and I wonder what might be in the stars... I am pretty agnostic where astrology is concerned, but a lot of prophecy is pointing to October, as well as a lot of science indicating that the pandemic may get a good deal worse then, if COVID and flu combine. Interesting that he made such a point of saying it didn't have to do with politics, yet that political and social unrest would hit a new high. It doesn't really take a psychic to see that we are headed that direction, but it did make me wonder what might be ahead.

What the hell is with today's COVID numbers in the US? We're seeing this big drop off in both cases and deaths.... is that due to the shuffling back and forth with how things are reported? Is it purposeful fuckery? Or, is something else afoot? I don't trust those data.

Agreed, schools need to move back to online lessons, there is the argument that the kids need the socializing aspect of school life, but where I live, the kids were socializing through out the lookdown and summer break, I think they'll be fine with a few more months online education...

Did you see CG’s Hawaiian Island issue? And those other 10 islands wanted to open up to specific countries....including NZ.

Most of the world that currently reports 'Recovered' using the same standards:

A) A person that has tested positive at least 14 days ago and has not been hospitalized in the 14 days and is still alive.
-or-
B) A person who tested positive, had been hospitalized at some point but has been discharged and the last positive test is at least 21 days ago and is still alive.

It's based on a WHO report from February. There are a platitude of errors with these definitions, one of the bigger one's being that it's not uncommon for people that fall under the definition of recovered to still succumb to covid. It would be more correct to re-label the meeting of these conditions as "no longer likely to be contagious" at this point but that would confuse a lot of people.

Lets just say there are reasons why most people that have a basic understanding of the numbers don't refer to recoveries all too often.

I understand you distrusting the data, the biggest misgiving I have about it all is the testing dropping off at the same time as new cases (Ca being a big exception). That said however for the time being all the numbers are in agreement. If we look at the longer trend where logically we would see less cases -> less hospitalized -> less death the numbers are all in agreement with the ongoing trend.

I won't say that lying or misrepresenting all the numbers is beyond anyone but doing so in a believable way becomes difficult and is generally not that hard to spot.

If we consider that however and look at the recent drop at face value there is no real explanation. We could argue that what we saw in Fl and Az scared people into taking things more seriously but the effect seems much larger then just that.

I personally think there is something fundamental about the way this virus spreads through population that we have failed to properly identify at this point, which is just a more intelligent of saying I don't know. Even if we considering theories like lower herd immunity threshold the very localized nature of the outbreaks we have seen makes it hard to apply at any scale lower then countries/states.
