We (@cmyeaton
, Evan Ray, and I) updated our analysis about ILI and #COVID19.

Bottom line: we are not seeing much evidence current that trends in influenza-like illness in the US are being driven by #COVID19.

We will keep looking and updating weekly.

The study:

It's a PDF so I can't cut and paste easily. It's a very short read, but essentially, as the tweet above states, they are not seeing much evidence of underlying COVID infections in the US.
 Quoting: NawtyBits

Read between the lines.

Not seeing MUCH is different than not seeing any. They are in fact finding viruses that are not identified by their standard test kit - which does not test for COVID19. On top of this, 6% of COVID19 infected patients in China also test positive for other viruses like influenza a and b.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76010295

Indeed. I believe the virus is starting to circulate in the US. Why else would the CDC start a surveillance program here.

Remdesivir has already been used to treat a Seattle man infected with a different coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2. Although they can't say for sure that the medication worked, his condition improved one day after receiving the intravenous drug.
 Quoting: KTee

Too soon to tell, but there are several atni-virals they are using that appear to be helping.

So, yes, some good news on the horizon. But then I read that some large percentage of drugs 80-90%(?) are made in china, so that pipeline might dry up quickly if no one can go to work.
 Quoting: NawtyBits

Being made in China is the caveat. However in that article says they are buying this drug on the black market? Hopefully there is another producer that is not "in China".
May be a little to late but I always try to find a silver lining somewhere.

Joint Statement by U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Repatriation of American Passengers from the Diamond Princess Cruise Ship

On February 16, the U.S. State Department facilitated the voluntary repatriation of over 300 U.S. citizens and their immediate family members who had been passengers on the Diamond Princess cruise ship. Passengers were evaluated by medical personnel from the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and all were deemed asymptomatic and fit to fly before being processed for evacuation.

During the evacuation process, after passengers had disembarked the ship and initiated transport to the airport, U.S. officials received notice that 14 passengers, who had been tested 2-3 days earlier, had tested positive for COVID-19. These individuals were moved in the most expeditious and safe manner to a specialized containment area on the evacuation aircraft to isolate them in accordance with standard protocols. After consultation with HHS officials, including experts from the HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response, the State Department made the decision to allow the 14 individuals, who were in isolation, separated from other passengers, and continued to be asymptomatic, to remain on the aircraft to complete the evacuation process. During the flights, these individuals will continue to be isolated from the other passengers. These flights departed Japan at approximately 4:30 PM Eastern time on February 16 and will arrive in the United States later this morning. All passengers are being closely monitored by medical professionals throughout the flight, and any who become symptomatic will be moved to the specialized containment area, where they will be treated.

Upon landing in the United States, passengers will deplane at either Travis AFB or Joint Base San Antonio and will remain under quarantine for 14 days. Passengers that develop symptoms in flight and those with positive test results will remain isolated on the flights and will be transported to an appropriate location for continued isolation and care.

Every precaution to ensure proper isolation and community protection measures are being taken, driven by the most up-to-date risk assessments by U.S. health authorities. We continue all possible efforts to protect the welfare of U.S. citizens. We encourage U.S. citizens considering international travel to continue to review State Department Travel Advisories at Travel.State.gov, and to closely monitor and follow the guidance of the CDC and local health authorities.

Early epidemiological assessment of the transmission potential and virulence of 2019 Novel Coronavirus in Wuhan City: China, 2019-2020

This article is a preprint and has not been peer-reviewed

Results: We found that our posterior estimates of basic reproduction number (R) in Wuhan City, China in 2019-2020 is calculated to be as high as 7.05 (95%CrI: 6.11-8.18) and the enhanced public health intervention after January 23rd in 2020 has declined R to 3.24 (95%CrI: 3.16-3.32), with the total number of infections (i.e. cumulative infections) estimated at 983006 (95%CrI: 759475-1296258) in Wuhan City, raising the proportion of infected individuals to 9.8% (95%CrI: 7.6-13.0%). We also found that most recent crude infection fatality ratio (IFR) and time-delay adjusted IFR is estimated to be 0.07% (95% CrI: 0.05%-0.09%) and 0.23% (95%CrI: 0.17-0.30%), which is several orders of magnitude smaller than the crude CFR at 4.06%

Conclusions: We have estimated key epidemiological parameters of the transmissibility and virulence of 2019-nCov in Wuhan, China, 2019-2020 using an ecological modelling approach. The power of our approach lies in the ability to infer epidemiological parameters with quantified uncertainty from partial observations collected by surveillance systems.

The after-intervention R0 of 3.24 is still too high to contain COVID.

Here is an article explaining the 34 and 94 day incubation period outliers.

[snip]

According to reports, the confirmed case reported by Xinyang County, Henan Province, Wu Moumou returned to Wuhan from January 14 to the confirmed diagnosis, which took up to 34 days. Three consecutive nucleic acid tests were performed, and the first two were negative. Another confirmed case, Ning Moumou, took care of his father-in-law, Zhang Moumou, who returned from a medical treatment in Wuhan from November 13, 2019, and it lasted for 94 days. The above two confirmed cases have aroused heated discussions on major social media. Some netizens regarded the 34 and 94 days as the incubation period of two confirmed patients and considered these two patients to be ultra-conventional cases.

In this regard, Feng Zijian, deputy director of the China Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in an interview with the China News Agency that the source of infection in the two cases in Xinyang County, Henan Province is not yet clear and cannot be judged as an ultra-conventional case. Previously, Zhang Guojun, the group leader of Henan Province's medical treatment expert team and director of the first department of respiratory and critical care medicine of the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, also said in an interview with the media that after carefully checking the trajectory and onset time of confirmed patients, two cases were reported in Xinyang County, Henan Neocoronary pneumonia patients are common cases, and the incubation period is as long as 34 days and 94 days.

Feng Zijian pointed out that the confirmed case Wu Moumou returned to Wuhan from January 14th, developed fever symptoms on January 25th, and was hospitalized on January 28th. The latency time was normal. Zhang Guojun said that although Wu Moumou's first two nucleic acid tests were negative, because the clinical symptoms were consistent with the symptoms of new coronary pneumonia, the Xinxian People's Hospital has been treating patients in accordance with the procedures until the condition is confirmed. 'After the third nucleic acid test, The diagnosis is related to the situation of material collection, reagents, and inspection time, which is more common throughout the country. '

As for another confirmed patient, Ning Moumou, Zhang Guojun said: 'Although the source of the infection has not been determined, Ning Moumou has no direct association with his new father-in-law.' He said that on January 31, Xinxian had the first confirmed case. In 4 cases, Ning Mou returned to the county from January 31 to February 12 and developed fever symptoms, which conformed to the epidemiological rules of new crown pneumonia. Looking back at his activity trajectory, Ning Mo was likely to be infected with new crown pneumonia during going out .

[snip]

At this stage, some people are worried about the emergence of unconventional cases with an incubation period of more than 14 days, which may indicate that the coronavirus is mutating and more infectious. Feng Zijian said that it is not yet possible to draw conclusions about the infectivity of the new crown virus. The common incubation period for new coronavirus is 14 days. Most cases develop within 7 days, and some cases exceed 7 days. 'About 95% of the cases are within the common incubation period, and some tailing data are not in it, which is related to individual differences.'

So, 95% of the cases are within that 14 day window. There will always be an exception to the rule.

Here's why American coronavirus patients are being sent to Nebraska

[snip]

They're heading to the Omaha-based Nebraska Medicine/University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). The unit is no stranger to treating patients with difficult diseases.

The special 10-bed biocontainment unit is a state-of-the-art facility that has been doing this kind of complicated work for nearly 15 years.

It is a secured area with its own ventilation system that is isolated from the rest of the hospital and is staffed by people with specialized training in communicable diseases. It had been commissioned by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2005.

So they estimate that about 1 million people in Wuhan have been infected and then combine that with the diagnosed deaths but make no attempt to estimate the number of undiagnosed death?

Yet Wuhan residents estimate the death toll as between 100 thousand and 200 thousand according to this video recorded in Wuhan yesterday

The warehouse is used by the US Department of Defense for storage of approximately 10 million Meals, Ready-to-Eat (MREs); by Bridgestone for storage of 400,000 tires; and by Controlled Pharming Ventures for growing tomatoes and corn.[2] The warehouse maintains a constant ambient temperature range of 56 to 60 °F (13 to 16 °C)[1] throughout the year.[1][3] )

The United States has a strategic National stockpile, but I don't have time to Google what's in it. I thought maybe somebody might know. I know we have a stockpile of oil.

The deadly new coronavirus
is up to 20 times more likely to bind to human cell receptors and cause infection than severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars), a new study by researchers at the University of Texas at Austin has found.

The novel coronavirus and Sars share the same functional host-cell receptor, called angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2).

Another 95 infection cases confirmed in Japan

Japanese authorities say nearly 100 people were confirmed on Tuesday to be infected with the new coronavirus, including one person under the age of 20.

Three men in Tokyo are among the new cases.
Two of them are in serious condition.

Three other infections were reported in the western prefecture of Wakayama. Most of the cases there have some link to a local hospital.
The youngest of the new cases is the son of an infected doctor.

And a man in Aichi Prefecture, central Japan, has also tested positive.

Peter Navarro: US Focused on 'Adequate Stockpiles' for China Virus

More time is needed to determine how the growing coronavirus epidemic will impact the economy, but meanwhile, the White House's task force on the virus is focused on being sure that the United States is prepared should the outbreak spread further, White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said Tuesday.

"I think we're going to need two to four more weeks to find out how much the contagion may or may not continue," Navarro told CNN's Poppy Harlow. "In the meantime, what I'm focused on here at the White House is looking at the supply chains for the kinds of elements we're going to need should we need to treat the coronavirus here."

Much of the U.S. medical supply has been offshore, he added, and "that's a dangerous risk that we face more broadly."

So now, efforts are underway to be sure that ventilators, antibiotics, and more are available — and the U.S. has "adequate stockpiles," said Navarro.
