1) Any data/evidence of a 2nd wave from reopening?

2) How many days before the protesters show symptoms? About another week?

1) Any surge we have right now would be Wave 1 Redux, I think.

2) It may be a few weeks, still.

From what I've seen is that people who catch it from asymptomatic people tend to get a lot sicker. So we may see some increase in cases (the 20%), those infected by the mild/asymptomatic won't be getting sick for another couple weeks.

All bets are off if it turns out that SARS-2 is seasonal. Then October/November are going to be fun and games.

I wasn't here but heard about it today. They all went into a tizzy cleaning. Can't believe the person let him in to sit in the lobby for 10mins, she's a major germ a phobe

Rising COVID-19 hospitalization numbers in North Carolina have doctors concerned

The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 in North Carolina each day has crept up in the last two weeks, and some doctors worry it may be a sign of things to come.

The hospitalization numbers reported by the state Department of Health and Human Services fluctuate from day to day, but from mid-April to mid-May they mostly remained between 400 and 550.

But since May 25, Memorial Day, an average of 671 people a day have been hospitalized with COVID-19 statewide, with the number exceeding 700 four times and hitting a new high of 717 on Friday.

Study: Hydroxychloroquine had no benefit for hospitalized Covid-19 patients, possibly closing door to use of drug

June 5, 2020

A major clinical trial showed the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine had no benefit for patients hospitalized with Covid-19, likely closing the door to the use of the highly publicized medicine in the sickest patients — a use for which it was widely prescribed as the pandemic hit the U.S.

The results come from a study called RECOVERY, funded by the U.K. government, that sought to randomly assign large numbers of patients to multiple potential treatments in the country’s National Health Service. The goal was to rapidly get answers as to what worked and what didn’t.

“Today’s preliminary results from the RECOVERY trial are quite clear – hydroxychloroquine does not reduce the risk of death among hospitalized patients with this new disease,” University of Oxford epidemiologist Martin Landray, one of the study’s leaders, said in a statement. “This result should change medical practice worldwide and demonstrates the importance of large, randomized trials to inform decisions about both the efficacy and the safety of treatments.”

This rigorous finding is likely to curtail in-hospital use of HCQ for very sick Covid patients. Whether HQC could still have a role in milder disease as an outpatient drug will have to await results of other ongoing studies but would appear less likely based on accruing evidence.

Florida Sets New Single-Day Record for Coronavirus Cases Since Reopening Economy, Over 4,000 in Three Days

On Friday, Florida's Department of Health reported a new single day record for coronavirus cases since the state began reopening.

According to the department, there were at least 1,495 new cases reported as of Friday, which brings Florida's total number to over 61,000. There were also at least 53 new deaths reported, increasing the state's total number to at least 2,660.

The number of cases reported on Friday marked a new single-day high number of cases since Florida implemented phase one of its reopening plan on May 18. The previous single-day high was on April 17, when the department reported at least 1,416 new cases.

In addition to hitting a single-day record, Florida has also seen a spike in the number of cases over the past three days. According to the state's department of health, there have been at least 4,231 new cases in the past three days, with 1,317 on Wednesday; 1,419 on Thursday; and now 1,495 on Friday.

Further, before Desai and Surgisphere focused on data analytics, their most public-facing activity was selling medical textbooks. According to The Scientist, the textbooks had fake 5-star reviews on Amazon from accounts impersonating actual physicians. One of the impersonated physicians, a breast surgical oncologist, told the magazine that she and colleagues eventually got Amazon to remove the reviews.

For several years, Desai also published a medical journal called the Journal of Surgical Radiology, which abruptly shuttered in 2013 despite its website claiming to have accrued 50,000 subscribers in short order.

In response to criticism and skepticism over the COVID-19 data, Surgisphere issued a statement saying, in part, that it will submit to an independent audit of its data. On May 30, some of the minor data irregularities—including a mislabeled hospital—were corrected in The Lancet.

Desai has been named in three medical malpractice suits, unrelated to the Surgisphere database. In an interview with the Scientist, Desai previously described the allegations as “unfounded”.
In 2008, Desai launched a crowdfunding campaign on the website Indiegogo promoting a wearable “next generation human augmentation device that can help you achieve what you never thought was possible”. The device never came to fruition.
Desai’s Wikipedia page has been deleted following questions about Surgisphere and his history, first raised in 2010.

Infection fatality rate of SARS-CoV-2 infection in a German community with a super-spreading event

Abstract

The world faces an unprecedented SARS-CoV2 pandemic where many critical factors still remain unknown. The case fatality rates (CFR) reported in the context of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic substantially differ between countries. For SARS-CoV-2 infection with its broad clinical spectrum from asymptomatic to severe disease courses, the infection fatality rate (IFR) is the more reliable parameter to predict the consequences of the pandemic. Here we combined virus RT-PCR testing and assessment for SARS-CoV2 antibodies to determine the total number of individuals with SARS-CoV-2 infections in a given population. Methods: A sero-epidemiological GCP- and GEP-compliant study was performed in a small German town which was exposed to a super-spreading event (carnival festivities) followed by strict social distancing measures causing a transient wave of infections. Questionnaire-based information and biomaterials were collected from a random, household-based study population within a seven-day period, six weeks after the outbreak. The number of present and past infections was determined by integrating results from anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG analyses in blood, PCR testing for viral RNA in pharyngeal swabs and reported previous positive PCR tests. Results: Of the 919 individuals with evaluable infection status (out of 1,007; 405 households) 15.5% (95% CI: [12.3%; 19.0%]) were infected. This is 5-fold higher than the number of officially reported cases for this community (3.1%). Infection was associated with characteristic symptoms such as loss of smell and taste. 22.2% of all infected individuals were asymptomatic. With the seven SARS-CoV-2-associated reported deaths the estimated IFR was 0.36% [0.29%; 0.45%]. Age and sex were not found to be associated with the infection rate. Participation in carnival festivities increased both the infection rate (21.3% vs. 9.5%, p<0.001) and the number of symptoms in the infected (estimated relative mean increase 1.6, p=0.007). The risk of a person being infected was not found to be associated with the number of study participants in the household this person lived in. The secondary infection risk for study participants living in the same household increased from 15.5% to 43.6%, to 35.5% and to 18.3% for households with two, three or four people respectively (p<0.001). Conclusions: While the number of infections in this high prevalence community is not representative for other parts of the world, the IFR calculated on the basis of the infection rate in this community can be utilized to estimate the percentage of infected based on the number of reported fatalities in other places with similar population characteristics. Whether the specific circumstances of a super-spreading event not only have an impact on the infection rate and number of symptoms but also on the IFR requires further investigation. The unexpectedly low secondary infection risk among persons living in the same household has important implications for measures installed to contain the SARS-CoV-2 virus pandemic.

Many factors - including response of authorities which caused protesters to mass into tighter groups, use of irritant gases on protesters, wearing of masks by many protesters - will impact outcomes. Reducing risk needs to be a shared responsibility of protesters and authorities.

1/6 Some very large, densely packed crowds at protests yesterday. Although outdoors WAY less risky than indoors, and although the vast majority of people protesting wore masks, crowding and large numbers increase risk of spread.

HI all, I talked to an RN this weekend. She works in an area hospital. She said they have 5 covid pts presently. One who has shown NO symptoms but for 6 weeks has tested positive. They wanted to release the pt but pt would not sign a something saying she would stay isolated until she test negative.

She also said, from what they have seen in our area, it's not a killer but is a strange virus. She said she has seen several pts be right as rain and then go critical in hours if not minutes. There have been deaths but not overwhelming. She did say the deaths all had other issues and covid just pushed their deaths along. I will say we are a very small community and all the cases that went bad where from a church group who had not closed services in the beginning of lock downs.

I asked her to get back with me if they start seeing increase in cases in a few weeks.
Hold on to your undies, it's gonna be a hell of a ride
