Immunity to Covid-19 could be lost in months, UK study suggests

People who have recovered from Covid-19 may lose their immunity to the disease within months, according to research suggesting the virus could reinfect people year after year, like common colds.

In the first longitudinal study of its kind, scientists analysed the immune response of more than 90 patients and healthcare workers at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS foundation trust and found levels of antibodies that can destroy the virus peaked about three weeks after the onset of symptoms then swiftly declined.

Blood tests revealed that while 60% of people marshalled a “potent” antibody response at the height of their battle with the virus, only 17% retained the same potency three months later. Antibody levels fell as much as 23-fold over the period. In some cases, they became undetectable.

The fellow co-horts have now had 6 incidents of possible exposure. 3 of them where exposed twice within 3 days of 2 different covid positives. Thankfully, all 6 tested negative. My question is they had them do test 6 days after exposure. If it could take up to 14 days to show is 6 days enough? Once they all tested negative they came back to work.

Most people show symptoms within 5 days, and almost all show by 12.5 days. There are a few outliers that go beyond 12.5 days. One could assume that it could take up to 2 weeks for there to be a large enough viral load to trigger a positive.

Couldn't socially distance? Blame your working memory

Whether you decided to engage in social distancing in the early stages of COVID-19 depended on how much information your working memory could hold.

This is the crucial finding of a research paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences coauthored by Weiwei Zhang, an associate professor of psychology at the University of California, Riverside. The study offers potential strategies to mitigate social distancing noncompliance in a public health crisis.

The researchers found individuals with higher working memory capacity have an increased awareness of benefits over costs of social distancing and, subsequently, show more compliance with recommended social distancing guidelines during the early stage of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Working memory is the psychological process of holding information in the mind for a brief period of time -- typically, just seconds. The amount of information working memory can hold briefly -- its capacity -- is predictive of many mental abilities such as intelligence, comprehension, and learning.

"The higher the working memory capacity, the more likely that social distancing behaviors will follow," said Zhang, the paper's senior author. "Interestingly, this relationship holds even after we statistically control for relevant psychological and socioeconomic factors such as depressed and anxious moods, personality traits, education, intelligence, and income."

Working memory capacity predicts individual differences in social-distancing compliance during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States

Abstract

Noncompliance with social distancing during the early stage of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic poses a great challenge to the public health system. These noncompliance behaviors partly reflect people’s concerns for the inherent costs of social distancing while discounting its public health benefits. We propose that this oversight may be associated with the limitation in one’s mental capacity to simultaneously retain multiple pieces of information in working memory (WM) for rational decision making that leads to social-distancing compliance. We tested this hypothesis in 850 United States residents during the first 2 wk following the presidential declaration of national emergency because of the COVID-19 pandemic. We found that participants’ social-distancing compliance at this initial stage could be predicted by individual differences in WM capacity, partly due to increased awareness of benefits over costs of social distancing among higher WM capacity individuals. Critically, the unique contribution of WM capacity to the individual differences in social-distancing compliance could not be explained by other psychological and socioeconomic factors (e.g., moods, personality, education, and income levels). Furthermore, the critical role of WM capacity in social-distancing compliance can be generalized to the compliance with another set of rules for social interactions, namely the fairness norm, in Western cultures. Collectively, our data reveal contributions of a core cognitive process underlying social-distancing compliance during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting a potential cognitive venue for developing strategies to mitigate a public health crisis.

Lower working memory capacity linked to non-compliance with social distancing guidelines during the early stage of the coronavirus outbreak

New research provides evidence that working memory is associated with engaging in social distancing in the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic. The new study has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

[snip]

Xie and his colleagues found that those with better working memory capacity were more likely to indicate that they had followed social distancing guidelines, such as not shaking hands and avoiding social gatherings.

“Our findings reveal a novel cognitive root of social distancing compliance during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said co-author Weiwei Zhang.

The researchers also found that higher levels of fluid intelligence and agreeableness were associated with greater social distancing compliance. But the link between working memory and social distancing held even after controlling for these factors and others.

Those with better working memory capacity also tended to view social distancing as having more benefits than costs and were more likely to have a preference for fairness during an Ultimatum Game, which partially explained the association.

Real covidiots! People who refuse to wear a mask or comply with social distancing have lower cognitive ability, new study shows

[snip]

Researchers found that whether or not an individual decides to follow social distancing depends on how much information their working memory can store, which determines mental abilities such as intelligence.

Following a survey of 850 Americans, the team discovered that those with more working memory capacity were more likely to comply with recommendations during the early stage of the outbreak.

The findings suggest that policy makers need promote compliance behaviors, such as wearing a mask, based on individuals' general cognitive abilities to avoid effortful decisions.

Coronavirus hospital data will now be sent to Trump administration instead of CDC

Washington (CNN) Hospital data on coronavirus patients will now be rerouted to the Trump administration instead of first being sent to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Department of Health and Human Services confirmed to CNN on Tuesday.
The move could make data less transparent to the public at a time when the administration is downplaying the spread of the pandemic, and threatens to undermine public confidence that medical data is being presented free of political interference.
Michael Caputo, the assistant secretary for public affairs at the department, confirmed the change first reported by The New York Times earlier in the day, saying in a statement that the "new faster and complete data system is what our nation needs to defeat the coronavirus and the CDC, an operating division of HHS, will certainly participate in this streamlined all-of-government response. They will simply no longer control it."
"The CDC's old hospital data gathering operation once worked well monitoring hospital information across the country, but it's an inadequate system today," Caputo said in the statement.

The Times said hospitals are to begin reporting the data to HHS on Wednesday, noting also that the "database that will receive new information is not open to the public, which could affect the work of scores of researchers, modelers and health officials who rely on C.D.C. data to make projections and crucial decisions."

Step 1: Control the truth.

Thank you for acknowledging that nothing that has been presented as fact, only as evidence.

If it is evidence and not fact, this confirms you are asking - and governments are compelling - adherence to a belief system. It may be a belief system supported by some evidence, however this does not mean the belief system is correct, since it is not fact and one could present evidence in support of a counter view, as well as the vestwe interests shared by many in positions of power politically and financially.

The compulsion aspect means you are compelling a set of beliefs. This is no different to compelling a religion, which is a set of beliefs. This is the debate that is not occurring in the public domain and all else is distraction from this debate.

Accordingly, government is beyond its natural purview with its actions of mandating masks etc. The action is fascist, as is support of the action, given the decision is being made based on beliefs. This should be obvious to all, given the request for people to inform on each other.

Similarly the forced closure of businesses, based on a belief is also fascist. These are prviate businesses, and should be left to make the decision themselves. A shop wants to mandate masks for entry? Fine. A person may choose to comply and enter or go elsewhere. Just as a person can choose to wear a mask to protect themselves and others if they choose. The use of force and coercion is a clear indicator that many do not share the beliefs all these actions are based on, for if they did this would not be required.

You have fallen to the religion of government and the rule of yourself as an individual by an external force. If you were attempting to think and sure up yiur your beliefs, you would do your best to pick holes in the evidence in support of your view so you would be aware of the potential limitations of the evidence... also known as objectivity.

Government and medical institutions said masks were not necessary, now they say they are. So at the very least they WERE wrong by their own admission now that they believe the evidence has shifted. Perhaps it will shift again?

Hence forcing people to comply with their ever shifting position is simply wrong. They are not infallible and constantly shift positions over time. Evidence can be misleading, no matter how sure people are about it at any point in time People are being asked to follow a pied piper. And are giving consent to totalitarianism and the use of force and coercion on those who believe differently.

With coronavirus antibodies fading fast, vaccine hopes fade, too

Disturbing new revelations that permanent immunity to the coronavirus may not be possible have jeopardized vaccine development and reinforced a decision by scientists at UCSF and affiliated laboratories to focus exclusively on treatments.

Several recent studies conducted around the world indicate that the human body does not retain the antibodies that build up during infections, meaning there may be no lasting immunity to COVID-19 after people recover.

Scientists identify six different types of coronavirus with increasing severity levels

Six distinct types of coronavirus have been identified by scientists in a breakthrough that promises to save lives by flagging the highest-risk patients.

Analysis of thousands of cases by artificial intelligence software has revealed different "clusters" of symptoms and ranked them in order of severity.

Headache and loss of smell are common to all six groupings, but the range of symptoms varies widely after that.

Scientists at King's College London (KCL) found that patients with the sixth type of Covid-19 are nearly 10 times more likely to end up needing breathing support than patients in the first group.

This is significant because often patients only deteriorate to a critical stage several days after after showing symptoms. The new ranking system should flag up the highest-risk cases and give doctors the opportunity to intervene earlier.

Snip WEST LAFAYETTE – Three of the first 504 students on campus since Purdue reopened tested positive for COVID-19, the university revealed Friday.

The three students arrived on campus for Purdue’s Summer Start and Early Start programs showing no symptoms when they were tested July 9 and 10, as they moved into campus residence halls, according to Dr. Esteban Ramirez, chief medical officer for the Protect Purdue Health Center.

The three students were living temporarily in a dedicated isolation area on campus, according to a release from Purdue on Friday.

Purdue officials previously had declined to release figures from the Summer Start and Early Start students and mentors, made up largely of freshmen getting a jump on their college careers and were the first large-scale batch of students tested for the disease since Purdue, on July 8, made a negative test mandatory to attend classes or move into a residence hall.

Kim Jong Un puts North Korean city on lockdown over suspected coronavirus case, says 'vicious virus' may be in country

After claiming for months that North Korea has no coronavirus cases, dictator Kim Jong Un placed a border city on lockdown after a person was discovered with suspected symptoms, state media reported Sunday.

North Korea's Central News Agency said Kaesong near the border with South Korea has been shut down after Kim believed the "vicious virus" may have entered the country.

Kim said he took “the preemptive measure of totally blocking Kaesong City and isolating each district and region from the other" on Friday afternoon, the state-run news agency said.

State media said the suspected COVID-19 patient is a runaway who fled to South Korea three years ago before illegally returning early last week.

North Korea said respiratory secretion and blood tests showed the person “is suspected to have been infected” with the coronavirus and has since been quarantined.

People who had been in contact with the patient and those who have been in Kaesong in the last five days were also quarantined.

If the person is officially declared a coronavirus patient, he or she would be North Korea’s first confirmed case. As the coronavirus has spread globally and shut down various countries this year, North Korea has steadfastly said it has had no cases of the virus, a claim questioned by outside experts.

US tops 1,000 coronavirus deaths 4 days in a row as experts urge the country to shut down

Coronavirus deaths in the US topped 1,000 four days in a row last week amid ongoing debates on the return of school and mask mandates.

The country recorded 900 new virus-related deaths Saturday, down from the 1,130 reported Friday. Since the beginning of the pandemic, at least 146,460 Americans have died from the virus, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
And models project that there will be up to 175,000 deaths linked to the virus by August 15, according to an ensemble forecast published by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation projects there will be around 165,000 US deaths by that time.

And on Thursday, more than 150 prominent medical experts, scientists, teachers, nurses and other experts signed a letter urging leaders to shut the country down and start over to contain the rampant spread of the virus.

"Right now, we are on a path to lose more than 200,000 American lives by November 1st. Yet, in many states people can drink in bars, get a haircut, eat inside a restaurant, get a tattoo, get a massage, and do myriad other normal, pleasant, but non-essential activities," the letter read, which was sent to the Trump administration, members of Congress and state governors.

Nonpharmaceutical Interventions Implemented by US Cities During the 1918-1919 Influenza Pandemic

[link to jamanetwork.com (secure)]
Conclusions These findings demonstrate a strong association between early, sustained, and layered application of nonpharmaceutical interventions and mitigating the consequences of the 1918-1919 influenza pandemic in the United States. In planning for future severe influenza pandemics, nonpharmaceutical interventions should be considered for inclusion as companion measures to developing effective vaccines and medications for prophylaxis and treatment.

Substantial Impact of School Closure on the Transmission Dynamics during the Pandemic Flu H1N1-2009 in Oita, Japan

School closure was an effective intervention for mitigating the spread of influenza and should be implemented for more than 4 days. School closure has a remarkable impact on decreasing the number of infected students at the peak, but it does not substantially decrease the total number of infected students.

I've updated Page 1 of this thread with these links if you need to show people some science on why schools should not reopen. I'll add to it as I can:
