Taxi driver with new virus infection attends New Year party with 100 people

February 14, 2020 16:25 New type pneumoniaLast month, about 100 Japanese men in their 70s who lived in Tokyo who were confirmed to be infected are the sons-in-law of a woman in her 80s living in Kanagawa prefecture who died from the new coronavirus. Was attending the New Year's party where people gather. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is investigating the route of infection.

According to officials of the taxi union branch to which the driver belongs, the confirmed driver was participating in a taxi union branch New Year's Party on 18th of last month.

The New Year's party was held on a chartered houseboat, and about 100 people, including their drivers and their families, participated.

Also, after the New Year's party, several participants complained of fever and other symptoms, and one of the drivers who had been infected was hospitalized with pneumonia and was later discharged.

This is not saying 100 new confirmed, I think it's just a result of the translation.

Coronavirus: infected taxi driver had contact with Diamond Princess passengers in Japan

A taxi driver believed to have had contact with passengers from the luxury Diamond Princess Cruise was among four new coronavirus
cases seen in Japan

on Friday, as the first passengers from the quarantined vessel were allowed to disembark.

[snip]

Officials also confirmed two new cases in Tokyo, both of whom had contact with a taxi driver in his 70s whose infection was announced on Thursday. One of the new cases was a worker on a boat where the Tokyo taxi driver had held a party on January 18 with his wife, the Tokyo government said.

The fourth person was a farmer in his 70s who was treated at a hospital in western Japan where a doctor was recently confirmed to have been infected, local officials said on Friday, adding that the two apparently never had any contact.

Wakayama Governor Yoshinobu Nisaka said, however, he did not think infections were spreading inside the Saiseikai Arida Hospital in Yuasa, where the man was briefly hospitalised from last week.

A local government official warned that infections could be spreading outside of the medical facility as the man developed symptoms before he visited the hospital on February 6.

[snip]

The new cases came as Japan on Friday began allowing elderly passengers on board the Diamond Princess who tested negative for the new coronavirus
to finish their isolation in government-designated lodging onshore.

Passengers aged 80 or older in poor health or confined to windowless inner cabins on the Diamond Princess were given the green light to move from the ship to accommodation on land.

The first of them departed the massive cruise ship on Friday afternoon, travelling in buses with blacked out windows.

At the wheel, one driver was dressed in a head-to-toe white protective suit, complete with goggles and mask.

A government official said 11 people had left, but declined to say whether more would depart Friday or offer further details.

So if 60% are to get infected 40% will not.

So if 2% mortality of infected, then total 1.2% of humanity will die.

That’s about the number that die each year anyway, isn’t it?

Will be a “double down” year for a year or so.

Not terribly alarming when viewed in that light.

Yeah... 1.2 % when treated in hospitals. Do you have 1.2 bilion ventilators and oxygen concentrators? Not to mention 2 bilion IVs+ beds and service?

DH appoints officers from disciplinary forces to assist in spot checks on persons under compulsory quarantine
******************************************************************************
The Department of Health (DH) today (February 14) appointed officers from the Correctional Services Department (CSD), Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department (C&ED), the Fire Services Department (FSD) and the Immigration Department (ImmD) to assist in enforcing the Compulsory Quarantine of Certain Persons Arriving at Hong Kong Regulation (Cap 599C) so as to ensure that persons under compulsory quarantine stay at their dwelling places for the compulsory quarantine.

Apart from persons exempted under the Regulation, the DH will issue quarantine orders to all people (including Hong Kong residents, Mainland residents and visitors from other places) entering Hong Kong from the Mainland and people who have been to the Mainland in the past 14 days preceding arrival at Hong Kong (even if they enter Hong Kong via other places). People under quarantine should stay at home or the dwelling places for a 14-day compulsory quarantine. Health officers and police officers are both authorised to enforce the Regulation.

[snip]

Apart from conducting spot checks, the Government has various measures in place to monitor whether persons under quarantine are complying with the quarantine order. The Office of the Government Chief Information Officer can make use of a location-sharing function of communication software and video calls to monitor the location of those under compulsory quarantine. The DH also makes telephone calls to persons under quarantine to ensure that they are staying at their dwelling places.

All persons under quarantine must strictly comply with the quarantine order. The Government will demand anyone not staying at their place of quarantine at all times to either wear an electronic wristband or be transferred to a quarantine camp depending on the circumstances. The Government may consider prosecuting persons who do not comply with the quarantine order. People contravening the quarantine requirement are subject to a maximum penalty of imprisonment for six months and a fine of $25,000 upon conviction.

TOKYO - A surgeon and a patient at the same Wakayama hospital, near Osaka, have been infected with the coronavirus, officials said on Friday (Feb 14), with three other new cases surfacing in Tokyo and Okinawa.

[snip]

None of the new cases have cited any recent overseas travel, let alone to Wuhan, the epicentre of the outbreak. This has left officials perplexed as to how an emerging bunch of cases around Tokyo and in Wakayama - which borders Osaka - have occurred.

Another possible COVID-19 case in the South Bay

As of Friday morning, there’s been no word from county health officials about the person’s quarantine status or how they might have become infected.

There are a lot of questions Friday morning regarding a possible case of COVID-19 in the South Bay. A person was being evaluated at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center and has been released.

Sharp Healthcare officials say a person under investigation for possible COVID-19 was discharged from Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center Wednesday, but that person is under supervision of county health officials. The health provider directed all additional questions to the county Health and Human Services agency.

As of Friday morning, there’s been no word from county health officials about the person’s quarantine status or how they might have become infected.

WHO underestimates the spread of the Coronavirus

The coronavirus probably has a stronger ability to spread than the World Health Organization has estimated so far. This according to a review of previous studies of the coronavirus' transmissibility performed not least by researchers at Umeå University in Sweden.

"Our review shows that the coronavirus is at least as transmissible as the SARS virus. And that says a great deal about the seriousness of the situation," says Joacim Rocklöv, professor of sustainable health at Umeå University and one of the authors of the study, published in the scientific Journal of Travel Medicine.

The World Health Organization estimates that the coronavirus has a transmissibility, expressed as a reproduction number, of between 1.4 and 2.5

[snip]

The earliest studies of the coronavirus indicated a relatively low transmissibility. Thereafter, the transmissibility rose rapidly to stabilise between 2-3 in the most recent studies. The reproduction number in the studies summed up to a mean of 3.28, and a median of 2.79, which is significantly higher than the World Health Organization's estimation of 1.4-2.5.

"When looking at the development of the corona epidemic, reality seems to correspond well to or even exceed the highest epidemic growth in our calculations. Despite all intervention and control activities, the coronavirus has already spread to a significantly higher extent than SARS did," says Joacim Rocklöv.

Now, a very important idea that has me just about ill. You know that HIV has stages. It's described in an African paper, which I'll try to dig up for you. First stage, flu-like, similar symptoms to this corona virus, BTW. About 4 weeks.

Then the silent phase. No symptoms.

Third phase is the killer. This is concerning, because AIDS is very slow - can take a decade or more to kill. This one seems faster, but we may just be seeing tip of iceberg.

There are other reports, from medical authorities, but this one has the symptoms and events clearly delineated.

Except for the rash. A couple people I know developed what looked like measles spots - or acne -- but they didn't have that. Wonder if that's what this looks like. No doubt in my mind that we have it here, just wonder if we'll just carry on a decade or more before we croak.

Do not violate the International Health Regulations during the COVID-19 outbreak

"...countries cannot implement additional health measures exclusively as a precaution but must rather ground their decision making in “scientific principles”, “scientific evidence”, and “advice from WHO”.1 Many of the travel restrictions being implemented during the COVID-19 outbreak are not supported by science or WHO. Travel restrictions for these kinds of viruses have been challenged by public health researchers,4,  5,  6 and WHO has advised against travel restrictions, arguing they cause more harm than good."

Thoughts: The problem is that the virus is spreading faster than either science or the ability of the WHO to make the right decisions. The IHR would rather see all humanity perish together rather than any one nation survive, because, you know, racism.

42 states with PUI? Does the map not tell us which states cause I only see a few darker. I assume those are states confirmed?

Just want to thank you, again, Nawty, for your excellent coverage of this emerging pandemic. Until later, do something nice for yourself today, and others. Listen to good music, walk in the sun if you have any where you are, whatever.

As coronavirus cases get priority in Wuhan hospitals, other patients are losing hope

Thousands of people are not getting the treatment they need because medical resources have been diverted to fight outbreak

Let that be a warning to everyone with a medical condition requiring any kind of interventions, including medications. Be prepared to be on your own.
