With the incubation period being what is known today,
how can you ever contain it?

It seems impossible.

Interesting timing with this hitting the US with Spring Break just around the corner. I suspect after the first confirmed case hits Florida, many industries will start to feel the pinch quickly as many parents cancel Disney trips or students cancel trips to the beach.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76801424

This is the reason Florida came out and said they aren't talking about CoV.

I think the CDC is walking us (albeit slowly) to start thinking about social distancing and eventually home isolation. I hope that's the case.

Looking to increase funding for local quarantine operations connected to novel coronavirus, San Diego county public health officials declared health and local emergencies Friday afternoon.

The action, which must be ratified by the county supervisors on Feb. 19, is similar to one taken by the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors on Feb. 3 and renewed for an additional 30 days on Feb. 10. If approved, it would help the county seek state reimbursement for examining, testing and following up with people in the community who are at increased risk of corona infection and also make it easier to request help from other government agencies.

The narrative is changing:

Yes, Coronavirus Is More Troubling Than the Flu

[snip]

Well, no. Pandemics are unique, and apples-to-oranges comparisons often obscure more than they illuminate. The current coronavirus outbreak is legitimately more alarming than normal seasonal flu, and public-health officials are probably right to be responding with unusually drastic measures. Such actions shouldn’t be taken with every disease outbreak, though, unless we’re prepared to accept dystopian restrictions on basic freedoms as a routine part of life.

The guy in Toronto and his wife are still showing positive nasal carriage. He has been a carrier for almost a month but he's been symptom free for at least a week. What if there are chronic carriers?

Will they just quarantine them forever? And how many of the cured cases in china were actually " cured " vs "freed of the carrier state".

I'm glad Canada is at least doing something right in all of this mess by having high standards for release from quarantine. (Must have 2 neg tests in a row.)

But if its really this contagious and many people might be chronic carriers for who knows how long...

What is the way out of this dilemma? How long can they hold people prisoners in their own homes? How long should they?

Let's keep an eye on this guy and his wifey. we can get a good idea of duration and/or carriage state because canada wont release him until he has 2 negative tests

He fell ill on the plane, that was the 22nd of January. So its been 3 weeks now and he's been symptom free for at least a week (according to internet )

Of the 7, the only one who has been released is the girl in London Ontario and I believe there is 2 or 3 more in Vancouver with a presumptive status from local lab dx.

I wonder how much longer they can keep the stock markets artificially propped up?

Back around 1918 it took a long time for the Spanish Flu to circle the globe, and the second time around it was much deadlier. Today with air travel it shouldn't take that long until most of the world's populations are exposed to the Coronavirus the first time, and it sounds like it's the second exposure that will kill, especially smokers.

Heard a counter argument today about vaccines making the immune response stronger, and in the case of cytokine storm - making the 2nd exposure worse, because the body is attacked by its own immune system.

So much conflicting information everywhere.
