S.Korea declares Daegu as 'special zone' over infections

South Korea on Friday declared the southeast city of Daegu and the surrounding region a "special management zone" after a surge in virus cases that city officials say threaten to overwhelm the region's health system.

Military to restrict draftees from vacationing, staying outside bases over coronavirus

South Korea will start restricting all enlisted soldiers from vacationing, staying outside their bases and meeting visitors this weekend, the defense ministry said Thursday, after the Navy reported the first suspected coronavirus case among the country's service members.

The restrictions, set to go into effect on Saturday, came at a meeting of top defense and uniformed officials, which was presided over by Defense Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo.

"Based on the recommendations from each armed service, Defense Minister Jeong decided to restrict them from going on vacation, staying out of their installations, staying out overnight and meeting visitors, starting from Feb. 22," the ministry said.

South Korean Army soldier was diagnosed with new crown virus

11 cruise ship passengers brought to Omaha test positive for coronavirus

OMAHA, Neb. —

11 people at the University of Nebraska Medical Center have tested positive for COVID-19, according to UNMC.

UNMC announced the CDC verified the test results completed Monday by the Nebraska Public Health Lab on 13 people for coronavirus monitoring. According to UNMC, 11 people tested positive while two tested negative.

10 people are currently in the National Quarantine Unit and three others are in the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit, UNMC said.

Of the 52 new cases, 41 are in Daegu, 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul, and neighboring North Gyeongsang province. Another three were reported in Seoul, the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention said in a statement. The spike of infections in Daegu and several cases in Seoul, where routes of infections are not immediately traceable, have prompted health officials to declare that COVID-19 has begun spreading locally.

SARS-CoV-2 Viral Load in Upper Respiratory Specimens of Infected Patients

We analyzed the viral load in nasal and throat swabs obtained from the 17 symptomatic patients in relation to day of onset of any symptoms (Figure 1C). Higher viral loads (inversely related to Ct value) were detected soon after symptom onset, with higher viral loads detected in the nose than in the throat. Our analysis suggests that the viral nucleic acid shedding pattern of patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 resembles that of patients with influenza4 and appears different from that seen in patients infected with SARS-CoV.3 The viral load that was detected in the asymptomatic patient was similar to that in the symptomatic patients, which suggests the transmission potential of asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic patients. These findings are in concordance with reports that transmission may occur early in the course of infection5 and suggest that case detection and isolation may require strategies different from those required for the control of SARS-CoV. How SARS-CoV-2 viral load correlates with culturable virus needs to be determined. Identification of patients with few or no symptoms and with modest levels of detectable viral RNA in the oropharynx for at least 5 days suggests that we need better data to determine transmission dynamics and inform our screening practices.
