A case of the deadly coronavirus has been confirmed in Victoria.

Victorian Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said on Saturday morning a case of the respiratory condition had been confirmed in a man who last week returned from China.

It’s the first confirmed case in Australia.

In the space of 6 days how many people has this man been in contact with? Dozens more could be infected, which could mean 100's more in the coming days.

The man is a Chinese National aged in his 50s and is in a stable condition with a respiratory illness at the Monash Medical Centre in Clayton, in Melbourne’s southeast.

The man flew in from Guangzhou in China to Melbourne at about 9am on January 19 on China Southern Airlines flight CZ321.

Ms Mikakos said there was no cause for alarm for the community, the patient is isolated and there were no other suspected cases. (How can they really know this for sure?)


Victoria’s acting chief health officer, Dr Angie Bone, said the man is being cared for in a negative pressure isolation room for a “type of pneumonia” which is expected with this kind of coronavirus.

“All infection control precautions are being used both for when he has visitors, but also be healthcare scaff to protect them,” she told reporters today.

“China has been very helpful in sharing the genome sequence with us so we have a very good test and we can be absolutely categorical about whether this is the situation or not, and that is the situation in this case.”

Also hard to believe he spent the entire 6 days at home and didn't leave the house, not coming into contact with anyone in the community..

This morning Victorian Health said it was "highly likely" more coronavirus infections would be confirmed, but said the risk of the disease spreading from person to person in the general community was low.

All the other passengers who were on the man's flight are being contacted by health authorities. The man's family is being closely monitored for any signs of illness.

The Chinese man diagnosed with Coronavirus in a Melbourne hospital did NOT go to the markets in Wuhan where it is thought to have originated. He’s a second generation case and it’s unclear how he got it.

He exhibited no symptoms on the flight and when he did experience some symptoms of illness they contacted the GP on Thursday, they called ahead and he was double-masked when he presented to the GP clinic.

He was not confirmed to have coronavirus by the GP. The family contacted the Monash Medical Centre on Friday, they called ahead of time and again he was masked before he turned up at [emergency] and [was] immediately put into isolation."

Victoria's deputy chief health officer Angie Bone said she was concerned that the GP did not link a person coming from Wuhan and a respiratory virus with a possible case of coronavirus, but she was "very glad that the family then brought extra help the following day when he clearly wasn't getting any better."

Dr Bone said the state would increase messaging to GPs and the doctor would be contacted and asked to monitor his own health....

It’s the first confirmed case in Australia among “about a dozen” cases being investigated, confirmed Queensland’s Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young on Saturday.

“It’s an evolving number,” she told reporters at a press conference on Saturday afternoon.

“We will be treating them as if they’re confirmed cases, as a precaution.

“We still don’t understand the transmissibility of this virus,” Ms Young explained, noting that treatment is symptomatic....

He went to his doctor and spoke to receptionists maybe filled out a form with a pen or used their facilities. Imagine all those sick people seeing that doctor for days after.
