Seasonal flu has a 0.1% mortality rate and causes 250,000 to 500,000 deaths yearly.

So with a disease that roughly 20 times more deadly, that means 5 to 10 million deaths.

I'm not saying it's the kind of doom porn glpers fantasize about, but it's serious. There's a non zero chance that people you know will die from it if they are immuno-depressed, too old or very young.

And if the mortality rate is really 2.6%, then it is a serious problem here.

As a comparison, the 2009 H1N1 pandemic had a low mortality rate, similar to seasonal flu, but higher contagion. The number of deaths from it was a bit higher than seasonal flu, but not much.

Now we are dealing with a disease that's 20 times more deadly than H1N1. So if you think it's nothing to worry about, then I guess the only kind of doom you deem worthy are asteroids and supervolcanoes, lol

This new virus is deadlier by at least a factor of ten. Make what you want of this info

They will help, fore sure. But they are not fool-proof. The Coronavirus itself is smaller in micron size then these N95 masks, even the N100 sort, can 100% protect you from. They also leak, BUT, are far better then nothing. You mainly want to protect your nose and mouth from a sneeze or airborne particles that may have been infected and carry the Coronavirus in the salvia spray or what have you. Then it is an effective measure to take.

Generally the virus itself will be attached to water droplets from a sneeze or what have you. So the mask will stop that. BUT, handling your gear is going to be essential as well. Always wash up and around, like someone with OCD.

What should also be kept in mind is that this virus will spread in parallel of the seasonal flu. No one knows what will happen. Many people will already be weakened by one or the other virus, catching the other one can be really bad
