Seems to me that beyond the missing it reveals the footprint of portal tech.

Correlate this and understand that all the mystery's are parameters needed to use that tech.

1 shoes ... hight of portal
2 feet on shore ... dumping of missed attempt to create portal

3 the need of boulderfields... How is portal projected and where is exit... what if only height density function is available. boulder field can be used as reference frame for 'projecting' portal

4 Even more symetric boulderfields : Very visible , very stable. Yep if true it explains why the ancients were so obsessed with big stones. (keep in mind they were not the creators of portal in that scenario)

5 Water (average density everywhere the same relatively fast moving molecules) No reference 'impossible' to project portal here

6 NEAR water... sharp density change , 3.1 g/cm3 to 1.. Signal must be strong. Even more if boulders give hint of local geometry
