My friend M moved to Wuhan after she got married couple years ago, currently she is living in Wuhan with her parents, her two older brothers, her husband and her two children. She lives a little bit far from downtown, an old neighborhood. Wuhan is a big city with many districts so that's not what everyone's life looks like.

* In Chinese cities, it is extremely common to live in neighborhoods , basically developer build these neighborhoods with similar buildings, pools and gyms, there are security guards outside, their jobs are to record none resident's license's plates, every neighborhood has a management company to deal with street cleaning stuff like that, also many neighborhood has a thing similar to H-0-A but they are not assholes, for example home owners can agree to raise a fund for something or host a block party.

Before the locked down, the numbers were already high. M went to buy masks everyday, going from pharmacy to pharmacy, also purchased necessary medicines. Every time she went out she wore two layers of masks, a simple one and a N95 mask. She had to be extra careful because she had kids and old people at home. Everyday she read the news, looking at the raising numbers, couldn't sleep good every night.

This is her daily routine: wake up, eat breakfast, use disinfectant to mop the floor, check everyone's temperature, asked how they are feeling, when her family come back from the outside, they needed to be sprayed from head to toe, everything in their bags needed to be sprayed too, they need to get a shower right away, took off the masks and put them in trash bags, bags to outside the door, soak all the clothes in disinfectant for half an hour then put them in washing machine.

Before the locked town everyone could still walked around freely, but they were already very careful, when she took her baby outside for a little sunshine, she only went to an empty spot. It was raining before city locked down, so her kids haven't left the apartment for almost one month. Her eldest was very upset at first, so she found a way to tell her what was to going on. Jan 23 after she saw it in the mom's group, saying Wuhan would be locked down, then said it was a rumor. Jan 24 2 AM, official announcement was out, Jan 24 10 AM Wuhan was locked down.

It's been announced that now you can't go to supermarkets to buy groceries by yourself. You can purchase food through your neighborhood community, which means they will have people to buy stuff for everyone in the neighborhood, to reduce people going out. Food delivery service is still available but the prices are not cheap, also food sold out a lot. There were old poor people picking up leftover vegetables in supermarkets.

She has this hobby to stock up stuff so things like toilet papers are enough. If needed she could purchase them in supermarkets or the little store in her neighborhood. She could still go to that store before yesterday.

Internet, water and electricity are all working fine.

Her biggest fear is family members getting sick, one time her baby girl was sick, she was extremely worried.

Every time she went out she bought as much stuff as possible.

Even before the announcement, people didn't go out much at all. The neighborhood H-0-A and management company already suggested people not to go out, also hired companies to disinfect all the roads and buildings. When going out, people were distant from each other. They also had employees came up to check residents' temperatures, that's how they found out some are infected. A 58 year old women passed away because there was no vacancy in the hospitals, when she finally got in, it was too late.

Before the announcement, when she could still go to the supermarket by herself, it was painful. Wearing a mask was not a pleasant thing. She reuses her N95 masks. She knew many neighbors reuse the regular masks for three five times.

Now she can still go down, take out the trash, things like that, but not allowed to leave the neighborhood. You need to have certificates for everything, driving, leaving.

Many people started groups to help a whole neighborhood to buy groceries. They didn't charge too much, you placed your order on [online] group, met the guy outside your neighborhood, picked up the food, used mobile pay, went home. The whole process was quiet, people didn't talk. Now some of these groups are banned because they lacked of some sort of qualifications, she doesn't know what's gonna happen, but her neighborhood management company and H-0-A are very good, she believed they will come up with something.

Her neighborhood received free vegetables twice, she saw people brought the food up for old people. Her neighborhood was old so they were getting less free vegetables.

"At first I was angry," she said, "I was angry why things ended up like this. But I don't think about it anymore, I can't be too worry, then I will lose sleep, then I have higher risk to get sick. At first there were not many volunteers, now there are so many, they are just ordinary people, I am so thankful for everything they did."
