Memphis tied with four other cities (Kansas City, Birmingham, Baltimore, St. Louis and Detroit) with the Highest Violent Crime Rate.

I heard of this from 2 different people moving here from Memphis recently. They will never return to Memphis, they said.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The city of Memphis was named one of the worst-run cities in the United States in 2019 in a study by an economic organization. The study, released Monday by Wallethub, ranked Memphis 136 overall out of the largest 150 cities in the U.S.

Memphis is the largest black populated city in Tennessee. Memphis' 63% black population far outpaces other major Tennessee cities like Chattanooga (33%) and Nashville (23%).

The state of Tennessee has one of the highest black homicide victim rates in the country, according to a recent study by the nonprofit Violence Policy Center. Black Tennesseans were killed five-and-a-half times more often than all homicide victims the U.S., when state and national rates per 100,000 residents were compared in a new study from by the nonprofit Violence Policy Center.

Tennessee's rate of black homicide victims in 2016 was also nearly 40% higher than the rate for black victims nationwide, according to the VPC study.

According to Strickland's staff, 45% of homicides in 2019 have been gang-related, and 78% of homicides were committed by people known to each other.

Nearly 40% of the Memphis homicides in 2019 are unsolved, according to MPD spokesperson Karen Rudolph.
