According to UNN, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, speaking on the Open TV channel, said that Greece will defend its sovereign rights by all means, including the military, if Turkey sends the research vessel Oruc Reis to the Greek Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
“We do not threaten anyone, we do not make loud statements, and we do not have such a hysterical reaction, which is typical for other countries in the region. We are simply saying that as a sovereign country we are constitutionally obligated to defend ourselves, and we will do this by whatever means our constitution and our capabilities provide. Turkey resumes projects in eastern Mediterranean despite conflict with Egypt, Greece

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday, that his country has resumed exploration operations in the eastern Mediterranean, noting that Greece has not complied with its commitments related to exploration for energy resources in the region.

After Friday prayers at the Hagia Sophia Mosque, Erdogan said: “We have started excavation work again … I don’t think we are obligated to talk to those who do not have rights in the areas of maritime powers.”

He added that a “seismic” survey ship had been sent to the region to carry out its duties.

The ship he referred to had moved to an area opposite the coast of Cyprus in late July and remained there.

Erdogan’s comments came in response to a question about the agreement signed by Egypt and Greece on Thursday to define the exclusive economic zone of both countries in the eastern Mediterranean.

In Greece, diplomats said that the agreement between Athens and Cairo effectively nullified an agreement reached last year between Turkey and the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord, but Erdogan stressed that the Egyptian-Greek agreement is worthless and that Turkey will maintain its agreement with Libya “firmly.”

The Turkish Foreign Ministry stated that the area covered by the agreement between Greece and Egypt falls within the scope of the Turkish continental shelf.

Turkey and Greece, both members of NATO, have long been at odds over competing claims to sovereignty over oil and gas resources, and tension between the two countries has recently escalated again.

Elements affiliated with the Turkish Armed Forces will conduct shooting training in the Mediterranean in the new week. Drilling works of Turkish ships in the Mediterranean also continue uninterruptedly.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his reaction to the so-called agreement in the Eastern Mediterranean as follows: "Now, this agreement between Greece and Egypt has no value. We started drilling work immediately. We sent Barbaros Hayrettin to his duty. They do not stop in their words."

Greece: Oruc Reis within the Greek continental shelf – Mitsotakis contacts Michel and Stoltenberg

The Turkish research vessel Oruc Reis is currently ten miles within the Greek continental shelf and has spread cables, according to sources from the Greek Ministry of National Defense. The same sources report that the Turkish drillship cannot carry out investigations due to the noise from the warships located in the area.

The Turkish research vessel, by order of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, sailed from the port of Antalya to an area southeast of Kastelorizo, ending a month-long moratorium announced in order for the Greek-Turkish dialogue to kick off.

For his part, the NATO Secretary General posted on Twitter that he had spoken with the Greek Prime Minister about the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean, emphasizing that the situation must be resolved in a spirit of allied solidarity and in accordance with international law.

According to Turkish media, Cavusoglu said “the Turkish administration demonstrated its goodwill in the region where tension has been high following the discovery of energy resources, by making “temporary” gestures in line with the demands of Germany and some other European countries.”

“However, Ankara’s gestures were not reciprocated by the Greek administration and Greek Cypriots,” the top diplomat claimed adding that Turkey reactivated its drilling vessels in response.

“We will defend rights of Turkey and Turkish Cypriots in the Eastern Mediterranean, and not make any concessions,” Cavusoglu said, adding seismic and drilling activities will be conducted this month.

Greece has mobilised almost its entire naval fleet in response to manoeuvres in the eastern Mediterranean by a Turkish research vessel and accompanying warships.
The Greek vessels, which are also accompanied by submarines and airborne assets, have formed a line blocking any further advance by the Turkish research ship the Oruc Reis, which arrived in waters between Crete and Cyprus on Monday.

The seismic research vessel has been shown in photos from Turkey’s Ministry of Defence moving while flanked by a close convoy of five warships.

The Greek press has reported, citing Greek military sources, that in total Turkey has mobilised more than 17 ships in the contested waters between the Greek islands of Rhodes and Kastelorizo.

These vessels have been deployed in addition to the warships accompanying the Oruc Reis in convoy.

The research vessel has reportedly begun dropping cables, part of the seismic analysis process, but cannot continue its survey because of its proximity to hostile Greek ships.

Amid the heightened tensions the Turkish coastguard has said a Greek vessel opened fire on a private Turkish boat. Two Turkish citizens and one Syrian were injured in the incident.

Greek Coast Guard says it fired warning shot at boat carrying migrants off Rhodes
An incident with migrants attempting to cross into Greece from Turkey occurred near the island of Rhodes in the early morning of Tuesday. According to the Greek Coast Guard, warning shots were fired to prevent the boat from entering Greece. On the other side, the Turkish Coast Guard says that two Turkish and one Syrian nationals were shot and injured, with one of them being in critical condition.

Citing sources from the Greek Coast Guard, daily kathimerini writes that warning shots were fired against a vessel which it said was carrying migrants from Turkey to Greece.

The incident took place at about 3.40 a.m. on Tuesday, when a private boat with an unspecified number of passengers attempted to sail towards the island of Rhodes.

The Hellenic Coast Guard said its officers “fired warning shots at a safe section of the [migrant] boat.” The vessel then slowed down its speed and returned to Turkey.
