The snakes of the Virgin Mary have made their annual appearance again in a church on the island of Kefalonia, Newsbreakgr reported.

The snakes appeared later than usual, as they are usually seen on the Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

According to the media outlet, one snake was found at the Church of Panagia Lagouvarda in the village of Markopoulo. The other was found a little while later by local residents. Immediately the village bells rang joyfully.

The small snakes which are friendly to people have a characteristic soft skin and the shape of a cross adorning their backs.

Thousands of faithful pilgrims usually flock to the villages every year to observe the miracle snakes of Panagia that seem to appear from out of nowhere and disappear again after the feast of the Dormition.

The snakes crawl throughout the churches and around the icons of Our Most Holy Lady, the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary.

The Church of Panagia Lagouvarda or Panagia Fidousa is the most well-known church of Kefalonia, built on the ruins of an old monastery.

According to history, the snakes of the Virgin Mary have failed to appear twice. The first time in 1940, shortly before the outbreak of World War II and the second time in August 1953, when Kefalonia suffered a tremendously destructive earthquake. Thus, it is believed to be ominous if the snakes do not appear.

Excavation team discovers 1,600-year-old octagonal church in central Turkey

An excavation team discovered a 1600-year-old church in central Turkey´s Niğde province, state-run Anadolu news agency reported on Sunday.
The octagonal church containing coins believed to be from the 4th century, present a rarity for Anatolia, it said, citing Osman Doğanay, head of the excavation team and instructor at Aksaray University’s department of archaeology.
“We think that the coins belong to the beginning of the 4th century AD. Thus, we have a proof of the construction date of the city walls and aqueducts,” Doğanay said.
Excavations in the ancient city of in Tyana were started by an Italian team in 2001, Doğanay said, noting the significance of the octagonal church.

The stories of drilling, where a research ship is sent with a massive naval escort, may be more about distracting from the economic crisis than actually fighting Greece at sea. Ankara’s track record shows that it usually uses Syrian rebels to fight for it in Libya and Syria and only conducts military campaigns against those who can’t shoot back, such as Kurds in northern Iraq, when it comes up against an Egyptian red line in Libya or Russia in Syria, it generally stops. It’s unclear where that red line may be in the Mediterranean. Ankara is trying to find out.

While the Turkish seismic research ship Oruc Reis is moving northeast atop the Greek continental shelf, accompanied by Naval vessels from Turkey, Ankara continues to issue provocative statements.

The oil and gas exploration ship is staying within the limits of its illegally-issued NAVTEX; meanwhile the movements of all the Turkish ships are being closely monitored by Greek Navy vessels and other units of the Greek Armed Forces.

Turkish Energy Minister Fatih Donmez wrote on Twitter: “Oruc Reis scans our seas. By August 23, a total of 1,750 kilometers of seismic cable will be submerged in the Mediterranean for 2D seismic research.”

According to Turkey’s official Anadolu News Agency, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday that he would not accept Greece’s attempts to “imprison” Turkey on its shores, disputing Greece’s maritime territory around the islands of Rhodes and Kastellorizo.

Erdogan further declared that Turkey “is a vast country and we will not consent to an attempt to imprison us on our shores over several square kilometers of islands.”

Greek FM to meet with US Secretary of State and attend EU emergency meeting

Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias will have an emergency meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Vienna on Friday.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two officials will discuss the tensions generated in the Eastern Mediterranean in light of Turkey’s most recent provocative acts.

The Cypriot media announced the arrival of two French Rafale fighters, in addition to a C-130H support plane, to the island of Cyprus, in what they said was a French message addressed to Turkey.

The “Defense-Point.Gr” news portal, which specializes in military affairs in Greek, said that France, by sending the three military aircraft, sent a clear message to Turkey.

It reported that the two French fighter and support aircraft landed yesterday afternoon at the Andreas Papandreou Air Base in the Paphos region and will remain on the island for several days, within the framework of the military agreement between France and Cyprus, which was activated recently, and will carry out flights over the island.

The Oruc Reis wanders aimlessly in the Eastern Mediterranean and eventually returns to its base. Turkey is renewing the appointment for a future return of the research vessel to action. It is supposed that the way of diplomacy is now being opened to prevent a military confrontation and to launch a gradual solution to the problem of delimitation of maritime zones in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The most interesting report from the Turkish side is that of Erdogan, on the call for an international conference of the Eastern Mediterranean countries, in order to find a "commonly accepted formula that will protect the rights of all".

Logic would theoretically dictate that if Turkey were genuinely interested in an agreed and peaceful settlement of the problems, it would start right there and not choose the path of show of force.

Unless, by their behavior, the Turks believe that they will intimidate countries such as Israel, Egypt and Greece, in order to find a way out that is compatible with Turkish aspirations.

Just yesterday, the Jerusalem Post published an analysis article containing an extremely sharp report on Turkey: Erdogan may be assigned to the Turkish Armed Forces almost every month "to keep them busy", but the targets are chosen such that they cannot be seriously counterattacked;

The question then turns to whether Turkey's current stance is a product of its strength, or an attempt to cover up its weakness, as there are many things wrong with the neighboring country in the current period. If this is the case, then Erdogan's call for a summit of the Eastern Mediterranean countries is the way out of his impasse.

A way out that should have specific characteristics. The most important thing is to raise the issue of "fair distribution", which in the Turkish perception does not include international law! Unless the other countries are willing to accept the Turkish "interpretation" of international law. However, given that such a meeting will by definition involve the risk for Turkey to hear from other countries the Law of the Sea and not the arbitrary Turkish interpretation.

It should also be noted that if a dispute arises, there is an international mechanism for clarifying what international law means and what it does not mean. With these data, the Turkish proposal to hold a summit of the Eastern Mediterranean countries begins to look even more like the sought-out way out of the impasse, which Erdogan has reached because of his policy.

Another issue is that all other countries in the region maintain diplomatic relations and good cooperation with the Republic of Cyprus. They are not willing to consent to her exclusion from the summit because the Turks do not recognize her. Would the Turks violate this "principle"? Probably not.

In fact, because they want to involve Germany, probably in an attempt to derail a similar French intention (summit of the Mediterranean countries), another question arises: By what logic could any country accept such a Turkish demand, as Germany in this case and recognizes the Republic of Cyprus and presides over this semester of the EU, of which the Republic of Cyprus is a member!

Turkey's economic problems are very big and deteriorating and with the international behavior shown by Erdogan's country, it obviously does not contribute to stopping and dealing with them. And this argument reinforces the reasoning that Turkey is looking for a good way out of the impasse that has come at its own risk. A deadlock which is certainly exacerbated by the active stance of the Greek Armed Forces.

What is needed for Athens, however, is to consider whether it has an interest in facilitating Turkey, or should it try to lead it deeper into the impasse it has created. It would do so not because it wants to destroy it, but to increase the cost of exploiting the practice of military coercion. In addition to exposing Turkish weakness to world public opinion.

However, the Greek side, which rightly seeks diplomatic support from partners and allies, could add to its reasoning that a qualitatively differentiated military stance would strengthen the international community's incentive to intervene an hour earlier. Because the point is not to achieve de-escalation now to get back to the same after a few days, weeks, or months.

In analyzes for the region, but also internationally, it is commonplace that "everything has changed". We should, therefore, seek to add the "Greek parameter" to the changes. Because the only constant in the equation of the region is the self-proclaimed domestically as a "consistently peaceful" Greek policy towards the Turkish revisionism.

We should seek it not because the peaceful policy is wrong, but because the way it is perceived by the recipients has nothing to do with what Greece explains and means. As a result, this rhetoric ends up hurting the Greek deterrent credibility and in general the impression of the other actors on how many concessions the Greek side is willing to accept.
