Well, imagine you have a whole bunch of factories, used by the west, and decide to go on a war footing.

Can you think of a clever cover story to turn those factories on for the state and not export.

They could literally be mass producing tanks for a couple of months, telling the rest of the world it masks.

They have effectively got all the worlds diplomatic staff to leave, all residents and "spies" of foreign nationalities have left. The ones that haven't will be locked in areas for their own safety in case they catch the flu.

We are either witnessing a potentially really bad epidemic, or we are watching China go properly dark.

China has an enormous population. They can take the hit. We can’t. Plus since they failed to tell us about the virus for 3 months, we will be sick in 2 or 3 months.

It takes us 3 or 4 years to build an aircraft carrier. The Chinese can build one - albeit smaller - in much less time.

Now if they were to seize South Korea, their shipyards could churn out ships quickly too.

I don’t think the odds favor the chicoms doing anything, but they take the long view and don’t mind putting their population thru pain to achieve their goals. The one thing that scares me is that they waited months to tell us about it the virus. Hell the first western team just arrived yesterday. So in two months the US and probably the military will be sick. We will have other things to deal with. Hopefully we are putting our subs at sea just in case.

The Asians are all about saving face. I remember now President for life Xi Jinping, addressing the Communist party officials and openly committing that Taiwan would be taken by them either peacefully or by force if necessary no later than the 100th anniversary of their Party's founding. This is next year of course.

Considering the Coronavirus running rampant, I am reminded that there is a saying that the Communists like to follow - Never let a good crisis go to waste!

At a moment when hospitals across China are posting cries for supplies on social media, the anemic response by the People’s Liberation Army calls into question some of its most lauded capabilities: powerful logistics and mass military-civil contingency response mobilization.

The PLA’s relative lack of response is even more puzzling given that Wuhan is home to major military units that should be capable of deploying to a contingency. These include the Joint Logistics Support Base, notionally the center of the PLA Logistic Support Force’s network of warehouses and stockpiles). According to China’s 2019 defense white paper, the PLA Joint Logistic Support Force “comprises the support forces for inventory and warehousing, medical services, transport, force projection, oil pipelines, engineering and construction management, reserve assets management, and procurement.”

The other military services also appear to be largely absent. In recent years, China has produced significant numbers of strategic Y-20 transport aircraft, bragging about the leap forward they offer to China’s ability to deploy at home and abroad, yet these have so far been notably absent from relief efforts. So too, the PLA has also signed strategic agreements with China’s largest transport and delivery services to allow them rapid access in a crisis. For example, the PLA’s largest-ever logistics exercise, held in December 2018, featured mass use of these companies’ planes and trucks. So far, none of these agreements appear to be in effect as part of the coronavirus response.
