The Senate approved a bipartisan measure Thursday aimed at limiting President Donald Trump’s authority to launch military operations against Iran, with eight Republicans joining Democrats in a post-impeachment bid to constrain the White House. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78465940 The rebuke was the Senate’s first major vote since acquitting Trump on impeachment charges last week. Trump is expected to veto the war powers resolution if it reaches his desk, warning that if his “hands were tied, Iran would have a field day.’” The measure, authored by Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., says Trump must win approval from Congress before engaging in further military action against Iran. Kaine and other supporters said the resolution, which passed 55-45, was not about Trump or even the presidency, but instead was an important reassertion of congressional power to declare war. While Trump and other presidents “must always have the ability to defend the United States from imminent attack, the executive power to initiate war stops there,″ Kaine said. “An offensive war requires a congressional debate and vote.″ The Senate vote continues a pattern in which Republican senators have shown a willingness to challenge Trump on foreign policy, a sharp departure from their strong support during impeachment and on domestic matters. Congress moved to impose restrictions on U.S. involvement with the Saudi-led war in Yemen last year after U.S.-based journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed in a gruesome murder at Saudi Arabia’s consulate in Turkey. [link to apnews.com (secure)] Only time a POTUS should be able to act unilaterally is if the homeland is under attack or if American troops or citizens abroad are in imminent danger and there is no time to wait for Congress. The rest of this world policing shit has to end. |

Because he attacked Iran. HHHuuuurrrrr deeeee ddduuurrrrrr Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72487361 This should apply to ALL military action for EVERY US President, which it does. He should veto it until they change it to ALL countries not just Iran... If he gets pushback ask why? Then he will have tricked them into fulfilling another promise - to get us out of ALL endless wars, or at least to make them accountable for it Holy shiz, yes lol. |

Congress is obliged in the constitution to have sole discretion to declare war, it then unconstitutionally cedes that power to the office of President, it then tries to partially limit that unconstitutional act because of what a nightmare it has proven to be (duh!), and then it is vetoed by the officeholder they unconstitutionally gave it to. WHAT A F'N MESS! |

Don’t see why Trump wouldn’t veto this. Stupid to handicap your leader while he is trying to negotiate against an adversary who keeps testing us. If they don’t fear Trump then his hand is bust. Always leave it to the Gaylord’s in Congress to not understand negotiations... might explain why every government contract is 10x the true cost Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3941884 |

It is only Iran because R's and D's still want to continue run all these little global wars on small nation states that are easy to bully to keep the dollar afloat - but they realize Iran is no joke and are afraid that President Trump, the greatest President in United States history is erratic and easy to manipulate and will eventually cross a line with Iran that can't be uncrossed thereby revealing the USA as the man behind the green curtain. |

Yep, i am amazed at the hypocrisy of it all tbh. |

The Dems and traitor R's are playing games with our soldiers safety and lives. This isn't the early 18 or 1900's anymore where we had our armies here fighting Indians in America, not stationed in Europe and the ME. We can't have soldiers stationed around the world taking fire and unable to fire a shot in defense because the D's and the R's need to get together in Congress first and then argue for several days on whether we should "declare war". Every hostile nation and then some will be taking pot shots against us knowing the Generals are waiting on Nancy pants or others to give the President the "ok" to direct the General. Bull fucking shit. Besides, the President hasn't taken their "power" away. They can still "declare war". The President hasn't declared war on ANYONE. Not ANYONE. In fact, he would love to bring all our troops home. It's the damn dems and rinos who want our troops all over the world taking fire. If Congress manages to get 2/3rds to override the veto, the President ought to PULL EVERY DAMN SOLDIER OUT OF EVERY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD IMMEDIATELY. Fuck the Generals and the Dems. The only one who will be happy with that decision is Rand Paul. Consequences for your votes MF's. |
