Kitchen sink faucet use question — who is to blame: Person 1 or Person 2?

Kitchen sink faucet use question — who is to blame: Person 1 or Person 2?
Person 1 uses the kitchen sink faucet on hot water. When done, he closes the faucet. He does NOT turn it to cold water before shutting off.

Person 2 arrives a few minutes later, turns the faucet on, and puts his hands immediately underneath the water, and ends up burning himself.

Is Person 1 to blame for not turning the water to cold first before shutting the faucet, or is Person 2 to blame for not waiting a moment before using the water?

In America faucets have a Hot water line and a cold water line. So this is not an issue.

Blame the idiot that sets the hot water tank on parboil.

It's BS anyway because there's not enough hot water stored in the faucet to burn anything. Nobody runs cold water to cool off the faucet after using hot water, nobody.

But in the case of a shower, no one uses it for super hot purposes (like dishes), so the potential of being injured is not a variable in that comparison.

Our water goes up to 140 degrees F and could burn if not careful

We like our riches rinsed HOT

Get a MIXING VALVE that prevents all hot or all cold water to come out the faucet - new houses have had them for decades

Turn your hot water heater temperature down to 120 to prevent burns - and especially if children will use the faucets or bath water

The person 1 had no obligation to turn water indicator to cold

The person 2 should have swiped his finger through the stream to TEST the temperature before putting whole hand in

An unfortunate accident occurred when an unlucky coincidence where two people turned water faucet on in quick succession

ACCIDENTS HAPPEN !!!

Prevention is the duty of BOTH people - person one could have turned the temp dial down
Person 2 could have checked the temperature before exposing hands

Think of the money you'll save by not keeping 40 gallons boiling 24/7 if turn the tank temp down.

It would need to be boiling to kill germs. The whole point of washing dishes with dish soap to to get the germs to slide off of the dishes, not to kill them.

If you have kids, you should lower the tank temp. I used to keep it cranked up, until my youngest got burned in the shower. That was 30 years ago and it's never been a problem with the lower temp setting.

Cost me about $16 month to heat water. Next time around I'm going with a tankless heater.

Re: Kitchen sink faucet use question — who is to blame: Person 1 or Person 2?
If it happened more than once, person 2 is a very slow learner.

YOUR water heater shouldn't be set for more than 140F, which is scalding, but 120 is plenty for most applications like hand washing and showering (no, you don't shower in 120F water, you mix with the cool anyways so 140 is crazy excessive to maintain money wise).

Some dishwashers have their own heating element, clothes don't need scalding, they can get high heat in the dryer anyway.

Re: Kitchen sink faucet use question — who is to blame: Person 1 or Person 2?
I just checked the temp at the kitchen faucet just like they said in the article.

We got a new water heater a couple years ago and there was a few months of playing with the temp control to get it just right so nobody gets hurt, not too cool, everything gets clean and we're not unnecessarily burning gas to keep 40 gallons HOT.

The temp at the faucet was 113 F.

The same “experts” design washing machines that use next-to-no water. And dishwashing machines suck just as bad. Therefore, the hotter the temp, the cleaner the dishes and clothes. I’ve seen it for 20 years. They’re full of shit.

I am considerate of the next person to use the sink (even if it's me again). I run the cold a few seconds after I run straight hot to fill the sink to soak the dishes.
