3 weeks later (today): 67,192 cases and 1527 deaths... and if it this is real, we know those numbers may be underestimated by up to 20x in some estimates.

Real or not, you can't blame anyone else for taking this all any particular way... The imagery is gnarly/shocking enough to warrant all of the discussion and speculation.

Novel Coronavirus/Covid 19 has around 67,000 confirmed cases and 1,527 deaths.
Novel Coronavirus spreads far easier than the flu with R0 of 2.2 or higher.
The flu only has an R0 of 1.3 yet it still manages to infect millions of people every year.


This virus is far far worse than the flu.

And yes even the experts are predicting that it will spread all over the world now.

The CDC lists all pneumonia deaths as being caused by the flu, even if the person didn't have the flu.

They also add in to the flu numbers the increase in death rate in the winter compared to the summer, even if those people die from slipping and falling on ice or in a car accident or a heart attack from shoveling snow.

There are only about 1000-3000 people who actually really die from the flu each year. And these are almost entirely elderly people who had pre-existing conditions that are really what killed them, aggravated by influenza.

Coronavirus has reached that level of deaths at breakneck speed, despite half of the Chinese population being under house arrest. And it's killing young and healthy people.

If no precautions were taken with this new virus and people treated it like the regular flu, there would be tens of thousands of deaths right now... there probably already is considering nobody believes the Chinese numbers.
