Sounds high to me and to them. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77590476 Wondering if car dealership/garages are getting their money while they can since new stock may be slow to come into the US, if at all? go to an independent shop and pay for a second opinion. do the brakes yourself - it's easy. if your 4wd works, the transfer case is fine. also, unless you're in a commie state with emissions tests for registration, or you don't like the buzzing or noise, just live with the rusty muffler. unless it's a nice car or something and he wants it kept up. or get a sawzall and a slip on muffler and save yourself some money - again, easy thing to fix. you'll pay big bux for a dealership to do such simple work. Telling someone that it's easy to fix their own exhaust system is TERRIBLE advice! well im no stranger to automotive work, welding, machining, and fabrication, so to me it's actually pretty sound advice. and it's just a muffler, it's not brain surgery. literally the tail end of the whole assembly and the easiest to replace, most aren't even welded on they're just slip ons. lol, what's wrong, never turned a wrench? |

Don Draper from Nantucket (OP) User ID: 57553864 United States 02/17/2020 05:52 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | [link to www.zerohedge.com (secure)] Quoting: Don Draper from Nantucket The global supply chain Armageddon is happening. The economies of the world are more interconnected than ever. There are many 'single points of failure' in these complex and global operations, of which many of them originate in China. A new poll via Shanghai's American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) discovered that 50% of US firms operating in China say shutdowns of factories have impacted their global operations due to the Covid-19 outbreak, reported Reuters. About 78% of these firms warn that their staffing is currently short at the moment, which would prevent the resumption of full production, leading to massive shortages of products in the next several months for Western markets. Many of these companies, about 109 in total, have operations in Shanghai, Suzhou, Nanjing, and across the Yangtze River Delta, are regions currently experiencing mass quarantine of citizens, industrial hubs shuttered, and transportation networks halted. Research the 30-90-120-180 days payment schedules for most products and freight. As with many individuals, businesses have financial situations that mirror it takes different multiples of the payment schedules for the system to fail. Most of China was prepared somewhat for the 30 day failures as they were backstopped by companies prepared for the new year. However once 90 days of zero economic activity crosses the finish line, wholesale failures of the market will ensue. Cascading failures are happening right now, that is why so many business are opening with "reduced capacity", this is to keep that markets and the population quiet for just a little while longer. Reduced capacity could be 10 guys showing up to turn on the lights and pushing brooms for ten hours. Nothing gets done because critical components are not there but hey the factory is open. Don't even talk about outsourcing production to India, I shudder to think of the quality control of anything from there that is rushed into production. THIS^^^^^ Very good point! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78490509 go to an independent shop and pay for a second opinion. do the brakes yourself - it's easy. if your 4wd works, the transfer case is fine. Yes, the wife wants to take it to an independent garage but the husband thinks only the dealer can do a good job. I would think he could do the brakes himself. But, either way car dealership or independent garage, I believe they will start charging more because they know their supply parts are going to dwindle (just in time) and who knows when they will be getting new parts. if they are white collar and this is a new or expensive vehicle i could see how they would be fine with letting a dealership do it. but word to the wise - dealerships will charge a premium price, but that doesn't mean premium service. i've called them out on SIMPLE things they did wrong, things that absolutely shouldn't have happened. once i had them flush/fill my coolant in a dodge cummins as i didnt have time and didnt want to deal with the mess/disposal. i get it home, check the freeze point, and it's around 0*f, it should be somewhere around -40 or so, can't remember the specifics, but MUCH lower. they said my floatmeter wasn't accurate and they'd use the optical meter - and sure enough, my gauge was accurate, my BLOCK would've cracked that winter for certain if I hadn't caught this. i held them to it and they fixed it but i do not trust dealerships, AT ALL. A lot of dealerships do not even have full certified mechanics doing the work. You have the 5 guys who have certificates on the walls but when you read them they are only good for oil changes and tires. There can be 1 actual mechanic who "supervises" the other guys. The shop can charge full rates on wiper changes even while only paying ten dollar an hour guys to do the work. that is very true. i saw this firsthand working in a toyota dealership years and years ago. that's why i didnt trust them and re checked it myself. the only thing id say in their defense is that a cummins the thermostat won't open forever because unless that engine is towing or in boost it's just not working hard enough to even get warm hence all that cardboard you see on grills - you'll NEVER get it warm enough just idling it in the parking lot to get the huge amount in the block and radiator so you don't have dilution. you basically have to do the job several times to be sure it's all properly mixed with premix 50/50. but yeah you are right - thankfully with a big DIY culture and resources like youtube if you want to take a chance and figure stuff out these days its better than ever to learn and fix stuff. |

Quoting: ReefRaider Answer: YOU DON'T! For How long: TOO LONG! Any Questions? the marketplace will fill the void, people will just be shocked at what it costs to pay for american quality since they havent done it for so long. go look at a REAL pair of leather, stitch sole work boots made in the USA, that lasts for 5, 10, 15 years and are recraftable, and see what prices they are asking. Then look at the total garbage most people buy at walmart for fifty bucks every three months and think THAT is normal. Those people will have a major perception adjustment coming if the only game in town is domestic, expensive, and good quality when they are use to crap at low prices. Only issue with this is that it could crash the American economy due to the major price increase all at once. A price increase slow and drawn out could be sustained but not all at once !!! |

I tried to look into it but it seems that the claim is that a handful of people who are unconnected to any real groups and a little disconnected from reality on both ends of the country are coordinated and trying to bring a stop to the Canadian economy. If true, umm, how can they block railines completely? Arrest them. They still have railroad police in Canada. The rails are a special section of Canadian law akin to crown lands. |

Last year I had to have some work done on my A/C. Local shop quoted me about $2600, they only use manufacturers parts and charge shop manual time no matter how long it takes. They couldn't get to it for a week so I tried the dealer. The dealer did it the next day (Saturday) for under $900, they had an aftermarket compressor sitting on the shelf (it was the same manufacturer that makes the OEM parts). Also the dealer checked to make sure the compressor blades hadn't disintegrated so they didn't replace a bunch of other stuff downstream from it. Local guy was just going to replace all that stuff because "the compressor blades always blow up". |

Or he did a recharge on it with materials that cost him all of ten bucks, and you didn't notice cause you never look at stuff under there and all he did was wash the components. And if it was a small leak, you will not notice it for 2-3 years and by then you will either sell the car, or forget and just think that it is just an old car. Dealers almost never carry "after market" parts. They only carry regular stock parts from their own sources. OOPs did I mention that I worked in a garage???
