I can't say for military K9's but I know the sheriff's are intentionally NOT socialized so they can do their duty as police dogs. Their officers don't even bring them in the house. They're kenneled when not on duty. As the saying goes, can't teach an old dog new tricks... sound's like a recipe for disaster to me

No kids under 5? That doesn't sound very promising no wonder no one will adopt them. Who doesn't have kids, whether grandkids or their own kids in their home at times? This eliminates 90% of people and the people with families are usually the ones that adopt dogs. I guess they are hoping for some old lonely people to step up.

These dogs have handlers don't they like a K9 cop would be partnered with a single dog for typically the dogs entire career?

I'm very surprised they have a surplus of retired K9's without a home. You would think the soldiers working with the dog would take them or if they are still enlisted the dog handlers family would take them until their service is over.

If I worked daily with a dog like that I couldn't imagine just leaving it in some military kennel to be adopted by strangers. You would think there would be a bond.

I don't like German Shepherds. The ones in this neighborhood are hyper-aggressive.

I had no idea this was going on!

If it weren't for my kids I'd adopt one right now.

Will make preparations for this in future. It would be a badass dog to own, very expensive training plus would love to help one of those furry heroes out!

Yeah it's pretty inherent in their breed. It's one breed of dog that doesn't sway very far from the stereotypes.

With that said, I fucking love German Shepherds. Rare to find a dog that intelligent, trainable, capable, and protective of its owners.

But yeah, they pretty much suck to everyone who isn't a family member as you noted. I can't deny that lol....

As the thread title stated, they are "PLEADING" with people to adopt them so it's not like the USAF isn't aware of the difficulties their up against.

I have a g s that found my son in a Walmart parking lot the day before he was going to the pound to adopt a dog. Bella is the most docile German Shepherd ever. There is one terribly sad thing she does. She has very sad nightmares where she howls and cries out in her sleep. It breaks my heart. The only other thing she does is chew remotes and shoelaces. Other than that she is a loving docile dog who sleeps in our bed with her head on a pillow and under the covers. If you ask her nice she will scoot over. We love her. The poodle is the boss in our house.

The K9s can work well with both military members and civilians. However, applicants need to ensure that they have a 6-foot fence, no kids under the age of 5, and no more than 3 dogs already in their homes.

Also, the person must have their vet listed out on the application and provide references.

You'd think a lot of vets would adopt these dogs.

These dogs are used to working so they're probably used to quite a bit of exercise. Something to consider for anyone thinking about adoption.
In his poem Human Pride, Marx admits that his aim is not to improve the world, reform or revolutionize it, but simply to ruin it and enjoy it being ruined:

With disdain I will throw my gauntlet full in the face of the world,
And see the collapse of this pygmy giant whose fall will not stifle my ardor.
Then will I wander godlike and victorious through the ruins of the world
And, giving my words an active force, I will feel equal to the Creator.

Don't know about specific branches of military, but of the 5,000 working military dogs that went to Vietnam, none, or possibly a handful of dogs returned.

Robby's Law was passed in 2000, stating that all retired military working dogs, if suitable, were allowed to be adopted.

The article is long, but worth reading. It should be read by those who want to adopt a dog and aren't able, by those who are adopting a dog, by those who love dogs and think of adopting them. Have tissues ready.

I am on my second German Shepherd. Both were/are girls. Best dogs I have ever had. Extremely loyal and intelligent. But they are working dogs. If you don't have time to work them then the aggressiveness can get out of control. But if you walk them plenty and train them constantly they will be the best companion you ever have. But you must be the master! A strong No! Will work because all they want to do is please. No liberals need to apply. Alpha males only for these trained dogs. (Took 15 minutes to train both to walk beside me instead of in front. No leash, just a stick that I would place in front of her nose and a strong No and both were trained)
