The K9s can work well with both military members and civilians. However, applicants need to ensure that they have a 6-foot fence, no kids under the age of 5, and no more than 3 dogs already in their homes.

Also, the person must have their vet listed out on the application and provide references.

 Quoting: wisconsin

You'd think a lot of vets would adopt these dogs.

These dogs are used to working so they're probably used to quite a bit of exercise. Something to consider for anyone thinking about adoption.

My guess is that these would be best as guard dogs. They're retired and older, and wouldn't be appropriate for livestock.

I have an Australian Shepherd that has herding in his genes.

I don't need a tall fence and he's good around children.

As someone who has owned/owns multiple German Shepherds...bullshit. The breed has a lot of health issues, that's why East Germany tried to improve it with the DDR shepherds which are mostly extinct now.

I would love to adopt a couple.

I have 8 acres and could put in an e-fence but no way in hell could I do a 6ft fence.

No kids under 5? That doesn't sound very promising no wonder no one will adopt them. Who doesn't have kids, whether grandkids or their own kids in their home at times? This eliminates 90% of people and the people with families are usually the ones that adopt dogs. I guess they are hoping for some old lonely people to step up.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 63229486

They're trying to find a better outcome for them other than to be euthanized.

As the thread title stated, they are "PLEADING" with people to adopt them so it's not like the USAF isn't aware of the difficulties their up against.
 Quoting: Lumberghini

Why can't the Air Force properly care for its old dogs?

Do they just throw away other obsolete weapons?
 Quoting: Jon Titor ™

What the fuck are they supposed to do with them?

Start a doggy sanctuary for doggy vets? I don't get it.

The military is for conducting war, not running puppy orphanages.

They are doing their best by trying to get the word out about adoptions.

In Vietnam, many dogs were left behind in cages to rot so at least they are trying to do better than that now.

Thanks for this! I've had Shepherds all of my life. I'm going to apply for one of these poor babies.
 Quoting: AsKnownAs

These are not German Shepherds, they are Belgian Malnois. They are the most bad ass breed available. If you aren’t going to work or play with your dog every day then it will become bored and destructive.

These aren’t cute cuddly puppies! They are heroes and deserve a good home, but they require attention.

Yeah he does. This is that prop dog of the make believe raid on some supposed terrorist (which ironically the USA created and had to purge before the Syrians and Russians got a hold of him). Al Baghdadi is probably living somewhere around Florida or Virginia right now, he was a very useful asset.

But long story short, Trump was able to stomach the presence of this animal just long enough to push the narrative of "hero dog gets wounded fighting terrorist". Americans eat that sh*t up. Of course he wouldn't touch the dirty animal himself.

These rules aren't exceptionally stringent, any shelter in any metropolitan or suburban area demands all of these things and more except for the 5 year old part which is on a case by case basis.

Unless you lived out in the country it would seem logical to have a fence if you had a dog no?

I am on my second German Shepherd. Both were/are girls. Best dogs I have ever had. Extremely loyal and intelligent. But they are working dogs. If you don't have time to work them then the aggressiveness can get out of control. But if you walk them plenty and train them constantly they will be the best companion you ever have. But you must be the master! A strong No! Will work because all they want to do is please. No liberals need to apply. Alpha males only for these trained dogs. (Took 15 minutes to train both to walk beside me instead of in front. No leash, just a stick that I would place in front of her nose and a strong No and both were trained)
 Quoting: GS owner 76687184

I agree they're wonderful dogs. Had two while a kid growing up. One of them insisted upon "rescuing" any of us when we went in Lake Michigan, lol. She'd swim out, grab you and pull you in. I've had several breeds of dogs, including some mixes and all have been great but different temperaments. My last dog just died four months ago, after 35 years of having many dogs and devoting my life to them. Not sure if I'll ever get another because I'm older and don't want to die on them! At this stage of life, I need very gentle and low key and for that I'd choose a Beagle rescue.

White girls are into some deeply weird stuff for sure. But what other option does she really have? - a skinny lisping millenial male in tight jeans? She's probably smart sticking with the dog.

Any dog that comes up to another dog from below and licks their mouth like that is showing submission - so at least the white woman knows her place in the pack hierarchy!

That wolf is not showing submission. Wolves and some dogs like to lick INSIDE the mouths of their pack. It's a friendly gesture and I'm sure they gather a lot of info from it. It's not the same as a submissive (from low down) lick.
