It all depends on the beard. Hubby was a Navy officer for 20 years and in the very early 70s they allowed military personnel to wear beards and mustaches as long as they could get a good seal on their OBAs (oxygen breathing apparatus). He wore one for years until in the mid 80s they decided it wasn't gonna be allowed any more.

I was working in the library on base (in Naples, Italy) when he came in and told me about the decision, and the next time I saw him (about an hour later) he was clean shaven. Even though I'd been warned, I gasped, and told him he looked like Fred (his younger brother), and got the finger for that remark.

Kept neatly trimmed (not like an old testament prophet) would work even today. So don't go crazy with the razors just yet.
