Honesty is the best policy. Personally I would have just given them a heads up because they will be hearing about it from other places than you. Currently low risk, don't touch things you don't need to touch. Wash hands properly (teach them how). And that if anything happens you all will work through it as a family, as always. Talk about plans "if" schools close.

I wouldn't make promises I couldn't keep.

I guess I'm old fashioned, but I don't believe in telling children anything about what is going on.

If they pressed me with questions because people were talking about it at school, I would tell them that dangers have always hung over the heads of humanity in one form or another, and sometimes they strike: disaster, plague, war, economic collapse. I would encourage them to study the history of all those things and how people coped, and they would know what to expect and how to handle it.

But I would remind them of all the false prophesies of doom, and how people had wasted their lives trying to prep for things that never happened, and worrying pointlessly.

Life needs to be lived - long or short.

"Finish your homework and go play outside."

"Daddy will take care of you."

Have people forgotten their function as mothers and fathers.

Don't drown the ceremony of innocence with your fears.

Generally not a good idea to promise things outside your control.

If you stick to that you realize just how little control you have. Which shortens the list of things you need to work on and worry about...
