MY son works for a large international service firm (you would know the name in an instant), with offices around the globe, the company realized the supply issue weeks ago. They have had their people working for 3 weeks to help clients realign their supply chain.

As early as two weeks ago, he said that, if this continues, it just will be beyond what can be replaced or realigned with many companies taking years, if ever, to recover. A prolong shutdown of the worlds industries will have a catastrophic effect on standards of living everywhere for months.

My grandson is a graduate student at a well known college 1500 miles away from home. Luxury stores and luxury auto dealerships in the area.

When he was a sophomore, living in a dorm, my daughter had his Audi transported to him. One day I asked him where he parks his car so the doors don't get dents....obviously in parking lots on campus along with hundreds of other cars. He laughed and said he parks it in an indoor garage next to the most expensive cars he could find.

He said, "They're not Audi's. They are much more expensive. The Chinese own the most expensive cars!"

Even most American companies who produce their own product do it with at least SOME parts/ingredients/precursors that are sourced from China. Those "made in America" clothes? Wanna bet some or all of the fabric was produced in China? Even if the fabric was woven here, where did the raw fiber come from to weave the fabric? Probably China. Or the bulk synthetic that the fiber was produced from? China. Cut out one... just one... of these links and that "American" production line shuts down.

Many will say "well just buy American fiber/parts/ingredients"! Easier said than done. How fast can the domestic maker of such things ramp up on short notice? I have worked in a production plant and have learned some of the realities of the marketplace. You can only run your line 3 shifts a day (provided you have adequate trained and experienced people). To expand beyond that takes adding a line and getting people to run it... both of which cost money. Now, if it was going to be a long term thing (10+ years) it might be worth getting a business loan to build that line and a building to house it and train people to run it. But if you have reason to think that in 6 months or a year cheap Chinese imports will flood the market again, when they do, you're going to lose your shirt along with any investors who funded your expansion.

That's the hard cold reality of the marketplace boys and girls. We learned this during the Obama-era ammo shortage didn't we? That in the real world, production cannot be infinitely elastic in response to temporary circumstances? And elementary economics teaches us the law of supply & demand... shortages induce price hikes.

Basic 101 level stuff, yet amazing how few people actually get it.

Not odd at all. I have worked in and been a part owner in several small businesses. Even when we had 60+ employees we only brought a couple percent of sales to the bottom profit line each year. We were forced by landlords into 3-10 year leases if we wanted good space (I guess we could have declined and moved to China?). Our product financing was under terms we would lose our ability to keep inventory if our accounts receivable aged beyond an average of 60 days or our inventory turns significantly dropped. So in a situation like this you would just know your landlord and finance company are taking everything and you would walk.
