To those buying rice in large amounts
This might sound silly but rice is great for the prep cupboard. It is also very low in gluten, too, for those with celiac disease.

If you are buying rice please BUY some Oil so you can put it in the pot when its cooking /steaming esp. jasmine rice/ basmati rice. You only need a little bit . If you use corn oil your rice will taste like like corn. Strongtasting olive oil is also discouraged. Oil is shelf stable as you know.

If you prefer to add butter thats not a problem either...its just butter has to be refrigerated.

On the medicinal side of rice:

if you are having stomach problems and have to go alot stop wating everything and cook up some rice with no oil but add a little salt. Then add a dollop or two of PLAIN yogurt...frankly its better to make that at home, too, but its a bit time consuming. Theres plenty of plain yogurt in the dairy aisle.

just thought i would throw these thoughts out to all ...and hope theres some benefit for you.

Price is great. However, buying in large amounts leads to bugs. So, refrain from buying 20 to 50 pound bags. You will be washing your rice out forever to get them out.

Re: To those buying rice in large amounts
Stock them for years like so:
Get a soda bottle, wash and dry it well
Every 2 inches of rice inside, add a garlic clove and a laurel leaf.
When the bottle is almost full, take piece of cotton with alcohol in it, light it up and throw it in the bottle, closing it while it is still burning.

The fire will consume all oxygen inside, preventing the rice to spoil even further.

Seal the cap with wax and store it away from light or cover it with aluminum foil.

Re: To those buying rice in large amounts
We buy huge bags of long brown rice and bags of Quinwa.
To keep them fresh a long time you need to vacuum seal them up.

Once long ago I tried storing white rice for a long time not vacuum sealed but in mason jars with new seals. We found out after 6 months the rice began to get a dry dog food scent to it.
It had gone bad I guess.
Had to toss a lot out.

Re: To those buying rice in large amounts
Buy big bags of it then store in mylar bag add a oxygen absorber. I put 2 in. Then iron the bag but leave a few inches. Vaccuum the remaining air out then iron the rest shut put in a bucket with lid. And label the lid with the date and contents. I actually went threw all preps. I was curious . I re bagged everything. Rice was fine and everything was 4 or 5 years old. I only threw some buckets of beans away. I'll admit I might have been lazy storing them 5 years ago. and didnt get enough air out as I could have. I found a air pump for a blow up mattress. It will blow and also suck air out. So i used that to suck as much air out as possible. I did way better job this time around. The beans i did throw away looked fine just had a slightly off smell when I opened the mylar bags. If I was hungry I'd have no problem eating them. Nothing looked spoiled . Slight discoloration on the beans on top . But digging around the beans looked new. Afew beans I inspected looked alittle hard. I think they were ok just maybe it would take along time to cook to be soft. I'd rather throw it away now and be safe. I'll buy more and store it better.

If you put rice in the freezer for a few days it kills any insect eggs. ALL rice has those, but freezing will make it so they never hatch.

And hey, extra protein!

Asian family. Tablespoon of coconut oil. But we have a rice steamer. Just no other way. Oh and coconut oil will help keep the rice longer if no refrigeration.

Good luck

Very. Awesome tip
You can also get "oxygen busters" (i think they are just powdered iron that rusts and consumes oxygen) packets you can throw in.

But I like this tip a lot. It's low tech on the surface but deceptively sophisticated
