A shout out for Yerba Mate!!! Confessing my love for this herb, and welcoming others to enjoy it's goodness... Anyone else as into Mate as me?
God I love the stuff...

Replaced coffee with it...(and I was a die-hard coffee drinker)...a couple of years ago.

It's been my favorite plant ever since.

I drink it like water, and it always gives me a soothing rush with none of the jitters of coffee, all of the vitamin and micro nutrients of green tea, and a flavor that is second to none.

I am sort of a fitness nut, so what goes into my body is important, and I can honestly say that the Mate is one rare plant, it has a ton of benefit and no side effects have ever been found, and I'm hooked for life...

Some people on here will be familiar with it, and others not at all, but man, if you DON'T know it, GET to know it...

You'll never look back.

I'll link up some info from a great thread on Yerba Mate from a bodybuilding forum that I frequent, check out the thread if you haven't already had a heads up as to what it is, lots of great info on this thread...

[link to forum.bodybuilding.com]

Mods: If there is any problem with linking up to other forums just let me know...I'll delete the link...but I can't see it being a problem as this is a forum that has nothing to do with the topics here...

But yeah, just my own thread for me to spread the love of the best plant that God graced us with here...

Interested in hearing from other Mate drinkers too!

From my link:

Yerba Mate, or Mate as it is often called, is a South American herb that has won many admirers in wide-ranging parts of the world. In the search for a natural stimulant devoid of side effects and toxicity, Mate currently holds the most hope.

An invigorator of the mind and body, a natural source of nutrition, and a health promoter par excellence, Mate deserves the attention of every person interested in optimum health. Yerba Mate was introduced to colonizing and modern civilizations by the primitive Guarani Indians of Paraguay and Argentina.

It has seemingly always been the most common ingredient in household cures of the Guarani. In modern Argentina and Paraguay, however, Mate tea has become almost pathologically ritualized in a manner reminiscent of coffee and tea abuse in Western and Eastern countries.

Among the native Guarani, on the other hand, the natural use of Mate for healthful purposes has persisted. They use it to boost immunity, cleanse and detoxify the blood, tone the nervous system, restore youthful hair color, retard aging, combat fatigue, stimulate the mind, control the appetite, reduce the effects of debilitating disease, reduce stress, and eliminate insomnia.

This about sums it up...

If you haven't tried it, go try it!

I've been drinking the Mate gourd for 3 years now.
It seems to wake me up without the jolt that coffee has ( and it's easier on the bladder too).

Also it seems to give me a sense of well being and contentment that just makes me say "THIS IS THE LIFE!" as I sip my gourd.

That pleasant feeling is comparable to kava-kava which is now illegal in Canada.

Because Yerba Mate is sipped loose though a filtered straw, you can mix in other beneficial herbs as well. Since I'm pushing 50, I mix in stinging nettle leaves for the testoterone and bilberry for the eyesight.

Well, I have had it on a number of occasions. I can't say I noticed any particular effect, but the plant is a popular one in some regions.

Mainly used in South America as a hang over remedy.

I am certain it has other uses though!

What does it taste like? Someone recommended I switch to that instead of coffee and that it would help my migraines.
Well it seems so real I can see it
And it seems so real I can feel it
And it seems so real I can taste it
And it seems so real I can hear it
So why can't I touch it?

For crying out loud. It's just a tree leaf from south america that yields a nice, rich, green tea with caffeine, that isn't tea. What are you acting like a maniac for? It's not the elixer to eternal life. It taste pretty good, though.

Ah wonderful...I like to blend with ginseng and peppermint, and it does wonders for my morning grogginess, cuts through like a knife...

I like to experiment with other plants and herbs too...mint sprigs, or a stick of cinnomin in my gourd for taste...

It blows coffee out of the water in every aspect...for a nation that loves ...(and needs!...lol)...it's stimulants like we do in America, I am shocked that Mate hasn't gotten more popular...

I was very happy to see green tea finally break through in Amwerican society, but always wondered why Mate, with it's stimulant effect PLUS the great nutritios benifit, never really made the crossover...

I hope that will change...

I always had a thing for coffee, but it started to really bug my stomache after a while...

But it's great to see another traditional Mate drinker...gourd and bombilla are the only way to go, sort of difficult to fit into the average American lifestyle, but sitting on my porch in the summer in the wee hours sipping from my gourd and watching the sun come out...

There really is nothing like it...

As a matter of fact I am...

I have no experience competing yet though...perhaps one day...who knows...but yeah, I'm always looking to refine my diet as close to natural as possible...

I used to dabble a bit in the "synthetic" side of the sport, and it took a huge toll on my body, so these days I like to keep it as natural as possible...

I miss the mass, but my liver is thanking me I think...

I laugh now that all of the supplement companies are adding some token Yerba to their cutting stacks...yet in such little amounts that it's obvious that they see a benefit to it and want to jump on what's becoming a trendy bandwagon...

I was the same way for coffee...you know how some people are, right?

They call us connoisseurs...some people are like this with wine, some with cheese...it's like a hobby for bored people to become connoisseurs of something...

I readily admit that it's a little geeky, but I tend to be the type of person who goes overboard, and I am a bit snobby when it comes to good food and drink...

I am glad I never got this way about wine...

Wine is much more of an expensive obsession...lol...

Most expensive wine for "connoiseurs" has been poisoned with aluminum, to cause a raging case of Alzheimer's disease later down the road. I like wine, but prefer to make my own-minus the aluminum.

I think shortly after Jesus made wine they started poisoning it. Rome used lead, the world nowadays uses aluminum for more subtle effects. Many other chemicals included, none required to be listed. Yopu definitely are not just geiing the wine of a fruit when you buy their shit.

Hmmmm....oh my....
"Ilex paraguariensis"

Magical uses: Wear to attract the opposite sex. The infusion is a fine "lust" potion and if drunk with a loved one will ensure that you stay together. To break off the relationship, spill some onto the ground.

Hey bro...

How are you?

Are you a coffee drinker? You should try it, it has a "woody" taste?...sort of like pine needles and cedar chips...it's smells and tastes like musty forest...

It's the leaves and bark from a holly shrub. Just like coffee it's an acquired taste, and also like coffee it comes in MANY different varieties and tastes.

You know how coffee comes in dark roast, Columbian, French roast, etc...

Well Yerba Mate is the same...

If you get the chance to try it, I would suggest you stay to a milder blend to begin, like "cruze de malta"...And I would stay away from blends like "romance" or "guyaki"...

This of course means nothing to you but if you ever get the chance to try it don't judge all on the blend that you get the first time...(especially if it is guyaki...lol)...but if you are already a coffee drinker then you should love Mate...

You can usually find it at your local market or if you have a Mexican store in your city...but yeah man, everyone in my family has moved on from coffee to Yerba Mate...

It's like all of the goodness of coffee with none of the jitteryness, and all of the health benefits of green tea...and the flavor is different for sure...coffee is bitter when taken black, and creamy when taken with milk, but Yerba is woodsy and fresh, very plant like, but not oily...

Generally I find if someone likes green tea, then they will like Yerba Mate...

Oh for sure...the gourd is only for the hard core...

They sell it in tea bags in wal-mart, made by celestial seasonings(?) it's in the pharmacy section with the other herbal teas...

It's not bad...a good introduction for people to see if they like it before buying loose leaf...I think it's like 5 bucks for a small box of the tea bags...

But unlike regular tea, you can use the bags many times and they don't get weaker...I have a gourd that I fill five or six times a day and the tea is just as strong...

Supposedly, if one were to drink a cup of Yerba Mate, along with cake with caraway, and warmed wine with cardamon, the lust levels will be at a very high level.

Wowie! That is quite a list of beneficial effects from this tea. Has there been any studies which prove the side effects of this herb?

That's a good question...

I'll have to look into it. I can say that it's quite addictive...in the same way that caffeine is, however I've never heard a bad thing said about it otherwise...

There is a ratings system for antioxidants in food though, and I know that it ranks better then green tea in terms of it's antioxidant power to scour the body of free radicals...

For that alone it's worth drinking, IMO...
