(UPDATE: 28.7 M cases -- 516 K dead - Week 9 Recap: p. 53) While I will not vouch for the accuracy of the numbers, and while the cases and deaths seem to be subsiding nationwide, we are not necessarily in the clear yet with regards to the chaos out country has been experiencing. The new variants may make the virus come back stronger. Only time will tell. Meanwhile states have begun to lift restrictions. On the news that the Brazilian variant can evade immunity, oil dropped three dollars the other day. There are still some dark clouds on the horizon. On the plus side, the fatality rate is much lower in the US than elsewhere and it is much lower than it was with the first hundred cases (6%). It is now 1.8%, but increasing again slowly. That could be an effect of the newer and more deadly variants. So far there is still less than one confirmed (probable) case for every ten Americans. It is possible many more were infected and were asymptomatic or had very mild cases. In that case the fatality rate is actually much lower...perhaps less than one percent or even closer to .5%. The deaths likely include many deaths that were not caused by the virus alone. The economic disaster is, however, very real and it continues. And we certainly have not all been able to return to anything like normal life. The chaos is real and it continues still. |
