never owned one but it has a threaded barrel so that you can add a silencer.

could be a great dual purpose sneak up from behind weapon

One of the best provided you can shoot.

I would get an AK47 first, then shotgun, then the ruger.

If you get a 10 or 30 round mag for the ruger, it will do the job. Provided you can shoot.

Its not always about stopping power. Just having a gun will scare of 90% or more, of those invading.

Good for hunting small game but very limited range and effectiveness compared to any other rifle or shotgun even

Range is not a factor inside.

Effectiveness would only be an issue if the invader was on something that caused him/her to not feel pain. A .22 will do the job if chest/head shot.

better off with a 12 gauge, unless you are good at a head shot.

or if you want something with less kick then a 20 gauge

My friends and I go shooting every Sunday, weather permitting.

A few of us have Ruger 10/22's, and all configured the same way.

BX-Trigger

Rubber Hogue free-floating stock

Match barrel (Sporter and not bull)

Nikon Rimfire scope

This ^^^ simple upgrade will turn your 10/22 into an easy 150 yard gun, enabling you to hit clay pigeon sized (4 inch) targets at that range almost every shot.

You could could place a round into a heart sized area at that range with no problem. And a head shot? Pick which eyeball.

The standard composite stock the rifle comes with is pretty cheesy, and the Hogue stock feels MUCH better. The BX-Trigger is like night and day, when compared to the fairly horrible stock trigger. And the match barrel is the icing on the cake. The Nikon Rimfire scope can be had for $90 on sale, and is the very best value for the money. They do a great job.

My friend always comments on how these rifles aren't any fun, because you break a clay pigeon every time you squeeze the trigger... lol. At 150 yards.

Most people consider a .22 to be a 50 yard rifle. But in the above configuration (which isn't all that expensive), you can turn it into a 150 yard head shot, every time.

And since we hit 4 inch clay pigeons with most every shot at 150 yards, you could easily make head shots at 200 yards with little effort. And body shots at 250.

Even if it isn't enough power to drop someone in their tracks, it's definitely enough to make them change their course of action. And if it doesn't, squeeze off a few more... lol.

yeah but its not really an inside the house weapon

will go thru walls and possibly hurt family members

20 gauge is a better choice for inside the home.

Reliable with Ruger magazines. Get the BX25 25 round magazines. and a good red dot sight.

P.S. -

I should have mentioned...

You get quite a bit of bullet drop at 150 yards from a .22, which is why these Nikon Rimfire (with BDC reticle) work so nicely.

You can quickly tell which circle on the Bullet Drop Compensator is applicable to what range. Once you have it dialed in, it's one shot, one broken clay pigeon.

I’ve got that in an AR format with a suppressor and the ATN X-site 4K pro night vision.

It’s as silent as someone clearing their throat.

And yes it is a viable self defense weapon. A BB gun is a viable weapon provided you can hit them in the throat 100% of the time. Which I can.

No. I remember reading the experience of a Marine in Iraq who used a shotgun during room clearing and he said adrenaline often made enemies keep fighting even after suffering mortal buckshot wounds. There's also this story of a cop who shot a suspect numerous times with .45 before the guy went down:

Having a hard time between a 12guagr very short barrel with pistol grip legal in Arizona btw or a 17hmr rifle with an amazing scope and 200 cheaper than the 12 gauge. Want both eventually but can only afford one atm

A .22 is a very useful, handy little rifle.
There are better defensive choices but it is a good gun that can feed you and protect you.

IMO, Yes.

Plenty of ammo available

Should run off all but the most blood-thirsty vermin.

Need additional firepower for the blood thirsty.

Any good preppers know that the only gun you need is a 22 LR. When you have to bug out and move quickly there is a pretty big difference between 1000 rounds of .22 LR and 1000 rounds of 9mm or .223. Your AK or AR makes a nice paperweight when it’s out of ammo.

Bears and cougars are the biggest threats where I live. I would never shoot a bear at long range, so a shotgun is the best thing to stop a charging bear. The homes around here are all frame construction so a shotgun is also the best for home defense. It's short range and the pellets won't travel as far through walls.

I shot a silenced ruger 22 in the army. It's a sneaky weapon. The only sound it makes is the click of the trigger and the bolt moving. It's more for assassinations than self -defense.

If you are worried about roving bands of squirrels braking into your home then yes, if humans are your worry then no.

Pump action shotgun is the best for defense. The sound of racking a cartridge alone is enough to send most unwanted guests running. Rifle in 308 or 762 for multiple intruders or 223 with hollow points to keep over penetration to a minimum. My personal favorite is .40 pistol with light/laser combo really all I need but have plenty of options to choose from in any room of my home.

I’ve had a lot of 10/22’s and they are great if you use the 10 round mag but I always have problems with the extended mags. The S&W 15-22 is much better and the 25 round mags don’t ever jam.

the takedown version is awesome. the soft carying case that comes with it holds the SR 22 pistol which is cool, and they come with a threaded barrel.
