The Hawai’i Department of Education is cancelling all school and department-related travel to the US mainland and international destinations until the end of the 2019-2020 school year, effective March 12, 2020.

The announcement came in a letter to all Department of Education staff, faculty, parents and guardians, from state Superintendent Dr. Christina Kishimoto.

“We recognize that Hawaiʻi state Department of Education sponsored student travel and professional development are important to overall academic design. In light of the evolving COVID-19 situation, we need to take additional precautionary steps to ensure the health and well-being of our school communities,” Dr. Kishimoto said.

In the letter Dr. Kishimoto noted that there are school trips scheduled to depart Hawaiʻi on Wednesday, March 11. She said, “Although these trips will not be bound by the upcoming department-wide cancellations, parents have the right to modify their travel plans accordingly.”

I wish they’d just quarantine the whole state for a month! Seems like all the tourists fled. Was all over the island today and it’s very very slow. Airport was totally empty. Going to be an interesting year. Aloha

I swear I was watching KHON the other day and Josh Green was saying that people with wuflu are not contagious until they show symptoms. So our news station and state government are both spreading lies. Great

I agree. We need to be like Samoa and stop all cruise ships and stop and screen all cargo ships 2 miles out at sea.

Anyone near Hauula? I’m concerned about my wayward daughter. She was living there but may be on the streets. Long blonde hair, green eyes, looks like Tinker Bell but talks like a Hawaiian Tita. She has brain damage which results in poor judgment and impulse control. If you run into her, her name is Jasmine. Please look out for her for me.

My daughter is in Kaneohe and said she will look out for her and ask around.

Thanks for the on the ground reports! Maui here, basically no TP, hand sanitizer or disinfectants at many stores. My job is essential and doesn’t rely on tourism but most do. Already hearing about layoffs in hotel and hospitality industries. We’re all in this together. Interesting times indeed! I wonder if the Common Kings concert April 3rd will happen?

Hawaii has only tested 32 for coronavirus
