We’re flooding again! Power has been off since last night. Hanalei bridge closed yesterday and no way to come in to fix power. Woke up to tornado warnings this morning.

ahhh

Stay safe over there! When I woke up an saw Tornado warning on Kauai I thought surely I had misread that.

Been on a mission to find disinfectant today. No success. Anything that will kill germs is gone. Also noticed the big stores don’t even have a toilet paper section anymore. They have put other products where TP once was.

Most fresh meats at the grocery stores sold out. Only the veggie soy meats left.

We have 2 guests on my property from Seattle currently self isolating awaiting test results. The state says 4 days until we know.

The plot thickens..

Power back on! They had to fly the repair crew in by helicopter. Bridge still closed and still under flash flood watch.

The Hawai’i Department of Education is cancelling all school and department-related travel to the US mainland and international destinations until the end of the 2019-2020 school year, effective March 12, 2020.

The announcement came in a letter to all Department of Education staff, faculty, parents and guardians, from state Superintendent Dr. Christina Kishimoto.

“We recognize that Hawaiʻi state Department of Education sponsored student travel and professional development are important to overall academic design. In light of the evolving COVID-19 situation, we need to take additional precautionary steps to ensure the health and well-being of our school communities,” Dr. Kishimoto said.

In the letter Dr. Kishimoto noted that there are school trips scheduled to depart Hawaiʻi on Wednesday, March 11. She said, “Although these trips will not be bound by the upcoming department-wide cancellations, parents have the right to modify their travel plans accordingly.”

I wish they’d just quarantine the whole state for a month! Seems like all the tourists fled. Was all over the island today and it’s very very slow. Airport was totally empty. Going to be an interesting year. Aloha

For those out of sanitizer, aloe vera mixed with isopropyl alcohol works as a diy method. I don't know the exact amounts to use but google does. Aloe is easy to find growing around here.

Hunkering down for round 2. This looks bad. Severe storm watch, high winds, HAIL. The county is warning people that if you don’t live Hanalei or north, get the hell out now. Even though the bridge is currently open, only residents being allowed through.

Kauai officially under curfew starting Friday. hiding

Oh! And our mayor is seriously pissed at the stupid tourists that keep coming and the greedy businesses that are encouraging them. While there are exceptions for residents to be on the road during curfew, there will be NONE for tourists.

Mayor Victorino announces Public Health Emergency Rules for Maui County:
Mayor Michael Victorino announced a number of Public Health Emergency Rules effective as of 7:45 a.m. Friday, March 20, 2020, directed toward limiting the gathering of groups of people and curtailing vehicular transportation except for essential activities or operation of essential business or government functions, such as travel to and from work and medical appointments.
“We need to take dramatic action to limit the spread of this infectious virus,” Mayor Victorino said. “We cannot do this alone, so we’re asking our community to follow these rules and look out for one another as we face this unprecedented crisis.”
The rules require restaurants and cafes that serve food within the premises to close; however, take-out and delivery service may continue.
Bars, nightclubs, theaters, tourist attractions, and other venues where the public gather must remain closed.
Grocery stores, farmers markets, supermarkets, food banks, convenience stores and gas stations that engage in the retail sale of canned food, dry goods, fresh fruits and vegetables, pet supply, fresh meats, fish, and poultry, and other household consumer products, gasoline and products necessary to maintain the safety, sanitation, and essential operation of residences may remain open.
Many stores are voluntarily providing dedicated kupuna shopping periods, especially in the morning hours, for those over 60 or those of any age with medical conditions. The rules require that all stores selling essential goods provide dedicated shopping hours for these higher-risk groups.
Essential activities, which are exempt from the rules, include:
1. Tasks essential to maintain health and safety, such as obtaining medicine or seeing a doctor;
2. Getting necessary services or supplies for an individual or that individual’s family or household members, such as getting food, pet food, and supplies necessary for staying at home;
3. Engaging in solitary or small group outdoor activity, such as walking, hiking, running or golfing provided that you maintain at least six feet of social distancing;
4. Performing work related to operation of an essential business or essential government function (defined below);
5. Caring for a family member in another household;
6. Caring for elderly, minors, dependents, person with disabilities, or other vulnerable persons.
Exemptions that relate to operation of essential business functions include:
1. Healthcare operations, including home health workers;
2. Essential infrastructure, including construction of housing and operation of public transportation and utilities;
3. Businesses that provide necessities of life for economically disadvantaged individuals and shelter facilities;
4. Pharmacies, health care supply stores, and health care facilities;
5. Gas stations and auto repair facilities;
6. Banks;
7. Rubbish collection;
8. Hardware stores, plumbers, electricians, and other service providers necessary to maintain the safety, sanitation, and essential operation of residences and businesses;
9. Laundromats and laundry service providers;
10. Businesses that primarily ship or deliver groceries, food, and goods;
11. Childcare facilities providing services that enable essential employees to go to work;
12. Roles required for any Essential Business to “maintain basic operations,” which include security, payroll, and similar activities.
“Although the County will make changes to its normal operations to safeguard employees and the public, the County will remain open to serve our residents and the business community,” said Mayor Victorino. “These rules are necessary not only to address the spread of the virus, but also to allow our first responders, emergency personnel, and medical professionals to perform their critical functions with as much community support as possible.”
Other provisions of the rules include suspension of regular meetings or hearings conducted by boards and commissions, although they may be conducted via alternate methods where possible.
The County is restricting travel on Pilani Highway from Ulupalakua to Kipahulu and on Kahekili Highway from Waihee to Kahakuloa village to local traffic only. The State Department of Transportation is also restricting travel on Hana Highway from Kaupakalua Road to Hana town to local traffic only.
“While we take these actions, I am still encouraging our residents to go outside, go on a walk, get some exercise, and for this purpose, County beach parks will remain open at this time,” Mayor Victorino said. “I continue to ask the public to stop hoarding supplies, help your neighbor and remain calm as we face this crisis together.
“Maui County is on pandemic lockdown and we’re telling all visitors to reconsider their travel to the islands during this emergency. Please help us to keep our communities safe and minimize the spread of the coronavirus.”
General information and resources on COVID-19 (coronavirus) can be found on the County of Maui’s website at mauicounty.gov. For more information and updates, please visit the State DOH website at [link to health.hawaii.gov (secure)] and CDC website at [link to www.cdc.gov (secure)]

Spoke with a nurse on the Big Island yesterday. Her husband is a truck driver and delivers Matson containers from the ports to businesses on the island.

He said to expect greatly reduced container traffic for the foreseeable future. Reduced shipping traffic will affect the neighbor islands most of all.

Nurse isn’t an alarmist but recommended every family to obtain a month worth of preps and to expect, in her words, “martial law” at some point, but I think she is meaning an island wide curfew and checkpoints at the main roads.

On Thursday, Lt. Gov. Josh Green said the state should suspend all non-essential travel to Hawaii, require anyone who comes to Hawaii to go through a two-week quarantine, bolster hospital capacity and isolate “completely” everyone who tests positive for the virus. A day earlier, nearly 100 doctors and health professionals signed a petition calling for much the same things.

So far, though, the governor has stopped short of those stringent measures.

One of those new cases is Daniel Dae Lewis, formerly of Lost and Hawai'i 50

Hawaii’s first celebrity resident and former “Hawaii Five-0” actor Daniel Dae Kim has tested positive for the coronavirus.

Kim released details this morning of his diagnosis, which was confirmed yesterday, on his Instagram account from his home in Hawaii.

He said he was in New York over the past several weeks playing, ironically, a doctor who gets recruited to a hospital during a flu pandemic. The show stopped production when outbreaks of COVID-19 started in the United States. He is one of 16 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Hawaii.

Kim said he was asymptomatic while on his way back home to the islands until just before the flight landed and his throat started to get scratchy, “which is unlike how I usually get sick.” His was told by his doctor to monitor his symptoms and quarantined himself in a room away from his family. But later that night, he developed tightness in his chest, body aches and fever, and his physician told him to get tested. The next day he went to a drive-thru COVID-19 clinic.

“It was worth it because of what I found out,” Kim said, adding that the doctor prescribed some medications and he went straight home to recuperate. He noted that was the only time he left his house since coming home and that he never went to a hospital. He started feeling better in the following days, though he is still not 100 percent recovered.

Reacting to Trump’s decision to refer to the illness as “the Chinese virus”, Kim, 51, said: “Yes, I’m Asian. And yes, I have coronavirus. But I did not get it from China, I got it in America. In New York City.”

He added: “Despite what certain political leaders want to call it, I don’t consider the place where it’s from as important as the people who are sick and dying.”
