The Hawai’i Department of Education is cancelling all school and department-related travel to the US mainland and international destinations until the end of the 2019-2020 school year, effective March 12, 2020.

The announcement came in a letter to all Department of Education staff, faculty, parents and guardians, from state Superintendent Dr. Christina Kishimoto.

“We recognize that Hawaiʻi state Department of Education sponsored student travel and professional development are important to overall academic design. In light of the evolving COVID-19 situation, we need to take additional precautionary steps to ensure the health and well-being of our school communities,” Dr. Kishimoto said.

In the letter Dr. Kishimoto noted that there are school trips scheduled to depart Hawaiʻi on Wednesday, March 11. She said, “Although these trips will not be bound by the upcoming department-wide cancellations, parents have the right to modify their travel plans accordingly.”

I wish they’d just quarantine the whole state for a month! Seems like all the tourists fled. Was all over the island today and it’s very very slow. Airport was totally empty. Going to be an interesting year. Aloha

I swear I was watching KHON the other day and Josh Green was saying that people with wuflu are not contagious until they show symptoms. So our news station and state government are both spreading lies. Great

Re: Coronavirus In Hawaii, news and coconut wireless updates: Governor Extends 14-Day Travel Quarantine and Stay-at-Home Order to May 31st
3 urgent care facilities now offering drive-through coronavirus testing

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Urgent Care Hawaii is the first private facility in the state to offer drive-through testing for the coronavirus.
There are three locations on Oahu offering tests: Pearl City, Kapolei and Kailua.
And the patient never has to go inside.
A big stop sign is on the door of one of the facilities, saying “Do Not Enter. Do not come in if you are coming in to get tested for COVID-19.”
Donna Schmidt, CEO of Urgent Care Hawaii, said the drive-through is a way to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
“I didn’t want Pearl City Urgent Care to be a breeding ground for COVID-19 so we had to really figure out how we could stay open for business, treat the people who had ear infections, needed sutures, have sprains as well dealing with the people who needed to be tested,” Schmidt said.
Those seeking coronavirus testing are asked a series of questions, including if you’ve had contact with a person with a positive coronavirus test, if you’ve had a fever of 100.4 or higher, if you have a cough and what your travel history is. You don’t need a referral from your own doctor to get a test.

I’m in Honolulu. Waikiki is crowded. There was normal traffic downtown this afternoon. Only saw one person wearing a mask, a kitchen worker walking to his car.

University of Hilo told the professors to prepare to for online classes after spring break. Monday begins spring break.

Cancellations, closures mount amid efforts to stem spread of virus

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Efforts to stop the spread of the coronavirus have triggered a flurry of event cancellations Thursday, including of the Merrie Monarch Festival.
The premier event for hula in the globe was to kick off April 12.
Meanwhile, Kamehameha Schools has announced it is postponing the Song Contest.
In a letter to parents, Kamehameha Schools said it was “exploring alternatives that will allow us to continue to celebrate the spirit and pride of Song Contest that may look different from the way to which we are all accustomed.”
The University of Hawaii has also canceled all sporting events and announced that classes will move online after spring break.

I can definitely say the mood has changed. People are noticeably on edge today. Flights to leave are booked while new guests are arriving daily.

Grocery stores were packed today after work. Toilet paper seems to still be the most popular item after hand sanitizer. Other shelves looking more picked over than usual.

Hawaii has only tested 32 for coronavirus

Since the start of February when Honolulu became one of nearly a dozen U.S. airports where all flights would be funneled from China, the apparent source of the outbreak, the state has confirmed only two cases of COVID-19, despite the fact that more than two dozen people who were either vacationing here or returning home have contracted the disease. Above, flight attendants walked through Daniel K. Inouye International Airport on Thursday.
