The First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles made the joint announcement in a statement on the same day that Utah Gov. Gary Herbert asked churches, among others, to limit gatherings to fewer than 100 people for two weeks. “Beginning immediately, all public gatherings of church members are being temporarily suspended worldwide until further notice,” the statement said. “This includes stake conferences, leadership conferences and other large gatherings; all public worship services, including sacrament meetings; (and) branch, ward and stake activities.”

PROVO — Brigham Young University is going online only. The university canceled classes for Friday, Monday and Tuesday and encouraged students to go home to finish the semester’s coursework remotely. Classes will resume Wednesday online. BYU also canceled all campus sports events effective immediately. All performances, concerts, public lectures and conferences are canceled beginning Monday. Study abroad programs for spring term, which begins in May, also are canceled. The BYU Jerusalem Center will complete its winter program nearly a month early, on March 27.
