Astronomers are keeping a close eye on Comet ATLAS (C/2019 Y4). Currently beyond the orbit of Mars, the comet from deep space is falling toward the sun--and it has recently tripled in brightness, possibly signalling an explosion of dust and gas in the comet's core. In late May, it will swoop inside the orbit of Mercury and could become very bright, indeed.

Comet ATLAS: Comet could be as bright as the MOON as it nears the Sun

By late May, it will only be 0.25 AU away from the Sun – one AU (astronomical unit) is equivalent to the distance between the Earth and the Sun – and getting closer.
When it approaches the Sun, it could become as bright as a waxing crescent Moon – the curved lunar phenomenon which is visible at the beginning and end of the Moon’s monthly cycle.

Experts are unsure whether it will burn to dust or whether it will produce a spectacular display of explosions as it approaches the Sun.
Karl Battams of the Naval Research Lab in Washington DC said: “ATLAS is a bit of a wildcard, and there’s a spectrum of possibilities as it nears the sun.
“At one extreme, it could simply crumble away in the coming weeks, and at the other extreme it could brighten up tremendously.
“It has an unusually small perihelion distance inside of Mercury’s orbit, which bodes well for getting those frozen gases fizzing furiously.”

Discovered by the ATLAS (Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System) survey on the evening of December 28th, 2019, Comet Y4 ATLAS was the last comet discovery of 2019. Though it was only at magnitude +19.6 at the time of discovery, the orbit of Y4 ATLAS is intriguing, bringing it in just 0.262 AU (39.2 million kilometers or 24.4 million miles) from the Sun in late May 2020. That’s interior to Mercury at perihelion, at 0.307 AU from the Sun. This comet also grabbed observer’s attention in January 2020 when it jumped 5 magnitudes to +12, or 100-fold in brightness.

The Comet that Changed Civilization – And May Do Again

Threats to Life and Civilization
In 1985 astronomer Carl Sagan identified the comet of 1486 BC as Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks, suggesting that a fragment of it had broken off and impacted with the Earth, the resultant explosion throwing debris high into the atmosphere and impeding the sun’s rays for many years, causing global temperatures to fall. But this may not have been the only effect of the cometary impact. At the International Conference on Catastrophic Events and Mass Extinctions held in Vienna in July 2000, scientists gathered to discuss possible threats to life on Earth posed by asteroid and comet impacts.

The Ancient Civilizations that Came Before: Self-Eradication, Or Natural Cataclysm? – Part I
Halley's Comet Linked to Planet Cooling 1,500 Years Ago
Interestingly, beside the obvious calamities such impacts would cause, such as firestorms, nuclear winters, and tsunamis, attention was drawn to various harmful chemicals that some comets contain. One of these is the amino acid vasopressin that can cause violent and aggressive behavior in humans. It is not at present known if 12P/Pons-Brooks contains vasopressin, but it if it does then the substance entering the atmosphere to contaminate the food chain could in part have been responsible for the unprecedented period warfare that griped the planet in the early 1400s BC.

Comets: The Basics
Comets are cosmic snowballs of frozen gases, rock and dust roughly the size of a small town. When a comet's orbit brings it close to the sun, it heats up and spews dust and gases into a giant glowing head larger than most planets. The dust and gases form a tail that stretches away from the sun for millions of kilometers. Comets may not be able to support life themselves, but they may have brought water and organic compounds -- the building blocks of life -- through collisions with Earth and other bodies in our solar system.

Remember that time when a comet blew into a dust cloud larger than the sun and I think some of the earth orbits?

Imagine if earth was inside that dust radius!

The Sun is no longer the largest object in our solar system. The recently visible-to-the-naked-eye Holmes comet has achieved that distinction today. The comet has a larger gas and dust cloud known as the coma, and consequently it has a larger diameter than the sun according to astronomers at the University of Hawaii. Scientists don't seem to have a guess as to how big it will ultimately become.

The comet is about as bright as an 8th or 9th magnitude star. That's too dim to see with the naked eye--but consider this: The comet is hundreds of times brighter than astronomers predicted when it was discovered 4 months ago by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS). And it's still beyond the orbit of Mars.
By the time Comet ATLAS approaches the sun in May, it could become quite bright, indeed. Estimates range from magnitude +1 to -10; in other words, somewhere between a 1st magnitude star and the waxing crescent Moon.
