Re: DFW Corona Update - Gov. Greg Abbott activates Texas National Guard in response to COVID-19 coronavirus
I have a friend who is a nurse at the above hospitals. Was just updated by her this morning.

1. Baylor Dallas is running out of beds rapidly at the moment.
2. Both locations are out of masks and some other PPE and staff are now forced to share some reusable masks when with patients. (Not ideal at all...)
3. Hard decisions are being made at this moment as to which patients are getting a ventilator and who is left to fend for themselves.
4. They are not testing people that don't meet a very rigid definition of the illness.
5. My friend says a lot of staff have been exposed to active cases without proper precautions or protections in place. She is no longer going back home for the time being because she doesn't want to harm her family.

Curious if anyone else has any additional information from these or other area hospitals or can corroborate this info.

I trust her to a point but don't know her terribly well. If she is telling the truth, it means the scope of this thing in DFW is being massively downplayed and covered up. Which just falls in line with everywhere else I guess.

I'm local in Dallas OP. This scenario certainly does not fit what the local news is reporting. Hope to hear more info to validate/debunk this.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78142740

That is one reason why I posted it here. I have had much the same experience with the local news so far so it was kindof surprising to hear we were getting that bad here. Was hoping someone on here might actually be a nurse or Dr. at one of them so they could chime in and give us an answer either way.

Well, yeah. I get it and even agree. I'm not going to trot my happy ass down there to verify or report though. I will stay here and gently fondle my emergency rice until my wife is over her cold.

Maybe running out of beds because everyone with a head cold will now think they have the WuFlu.

This has gone berserk in a matter of days thanks to the media. Someone had a thread this weekend about how the reporters seem almost happy when they're doing a story.

It nuts!!!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74773018

It's absurd. People aren't filling up the hospitals because "oh no, it's WuFlu", no. It's because

People

Are

PANICKING.

^^^Moron!

People that are panicking MIGHT fill up the ER, NOT the rest of the Hospital.
That has noting to do with hospital rooms or ICU.
This situation has been predicted here for weeks.

Is it a restaurant? I have heard rumor about a place in North Dallas/Plano that had an employee test positive and closed down but haven't seen anything on it since it was mentioned.

You are a dolt to even think this, much less type it, then hit post. Hospitals do not admit people just for shits and giggles, if they admit anyone, WuFlu or anything, they evaluate to determine if it is necessary. You really have no idea of how hospitals function. But in 2020, every thinks they’re experts.

My friend, name unspoken, was one of the few in charge of the ebola outbreak in dallas as well as recovery efforts with fema during Hurricane Harvey.

Just before cases started rising in the US (late january) he abruptly quit. He will not be specific on why he quit either.

I wanted to post this before but didnt want to prematurely inflict panic of any kind on any one.

This person was VERY good at what they did, was well known in all of the hospitals in a particular zone in dallas, which includes Baylor Dallas.

And now they are already run out of masks before the pandemic hits high levels in dallas. hmm

Had an early dr appt at infectious disease. They are on lockdown. Freaked me out.

Called me yesterday to tell me to wait in car until my appt time. To approach door and wait to be allowed in. Nurse came to door and unlocked it - let me in - locked behind. Walked straight Through lobby and into room No copay. No paperwork. No temp or blood pressure. Dr in room which had been rearranged. Everyone had masks on. Showed them my wound. No one touched me. I was there for all of two minutes. They sent a new prescrip to pharmacy.

I know my bloodwork is all screwed up and the results of the wound swab came back - not good. I just hope they are treating all patients same at. Freaked me out.

This is spring Texas.

Don't know your details but have you tried packing the wound with sugar since they don't seem terribly interested in giving you the care you should probably get? I have had very good success with that in the past.

I was in Baylor Waxahachie on Wednesday last week for lab work. The hospital didn't seem any busier than normal on the first or second floors. Did they get flooded with patients over the weekend or something?

Thanks guys for the recommendations. I have tried everything. It is in the bone and although I am taking massive amounts of vitamins minerals and herbs and antibiotics. - it is slowly moving. Half the foot was cut off a couple of years ago. It has to go. But I had a heart attack in January and now can’t get surgery authorization. So just doing what I can until I can get a below the knee amputation. I am in trouble. Not sure what the future holds.

I don’t work at a hospital but in a nursing home in the DFW area. We are in lockdown right now. No visitors are allowed in at all. Some one is posted at the door at all times and each worker who comes in is screened. The residents are no longer allowed to eat in the dining room, they have to eat in their rooms. We have no N95 masks only the surgical masks. I worry about when our supplies start getting low and the trucks stop delivering. So far nobody is sick in our facility and I pray it stays that way. Truth is though if the virus does infect the facility it will be because one of the workers brought it in and they showed no symptoms.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76001926

How many alternate staff do you have? You could put everyone on 12 hour shifts, slightly increase CNA to patient ratios and cut everyone down to one shift every 4 or 5 days to decrease the chance of anyone entering the facility while symptomatic. Or do 36 hour rotations like doctors, again, every 4 or 5 days. That way they'd most likely be symptomatic before they came in, and if they had been exposed just before working, they'd probably not be in the viral replication phase. Not sure what your numbers are or how many extra staff it would take. I know it's not legal in most outlets to only assign one CNA per 60 patients, but this is for their protection in an apocalyptic environment.

Hearing cases are at Baylor McKinney too.

Also, know multiple families who went on spring break to Colorado. They got back this weekend and are included in the Colorado "only go out for necessities."

DFW is about to pop off here real quick.

Ha!! Nursing homes are notoriously understaffed. We have about 60ish residents and the 6-2 shifts have 6 aides, 2-10 have 5 and 10-6 only have 4. We work 4 on 2 off. We are only allowed by law to work up to 16 hours in a day. That’s aides and nurses. We have no PRN ( as needed) staff as of now.

The daughter of a friend, who works at another medical facility, said they had a Covid19 case two weeks before the Frisco "1st" DFW case. They kept it hush-hush and shipped them to Baylor.

They were told not to discuss it.

It's out there. We'd be fools to dismiss it.

And this is on top of a really active flu season.

So an update. I sent a message earlier asking what the age ranges for admissions for the virus were and she said it "looked pretty even across the board".

Not really super helpful but at least she answered me.

I would be curious if you could ask around and see if you might be able to pick up on something. Any sort of secondary confirmation of this would be useful.

In other news, I was just informed that I have a family member (extended and by marriage) who is confirmed positive and is in home quarantine. So there's that.

I'm a member of a moms group in Fort Worth (mostly stay at home moms with younger kids).

We have 4-5 moms that have been told by their doctors that they are 'assumed to have it' and that they should self-quarantine for 2-3 weeks. They were told that there aren't enough tests and since they are low-risk for complications as well as for spreading it, to just stay home and call if they experience shortness of breath or any other life- limiting complication.

I definitely think it is strong here in this area. And, the stores are PACKED with dumb people spreading it quickly.

Re: DFW Corona Update - Gov. Greg Abbott activates Texas National Guard in response to COVID-19 coronavirus
I'm currently in Dallas. I'm frying Spam, watching the Looknerd on TV and reading stuff on the internet. I can't really corroborate anything other than fried Spam is pretty good, the Looknerd is in a better place emotionally today than he was yesterday, and the internet is working good.

Looknerd... good to hear his nose isn’t all bent out of shape like yesterday. Ughmm.

And his tweets... he won’t be getting any invites to white house.
