Look up "Margin Debt". With the market rising after Trump was elected many started buying stocks on margin.

Margin debt is now very high. When margin calls commence it will get really ugly unless the government suspends the margin calls or buys the losses. I suspect that's why the government said it would start buying commercial paper

Regardless of what the government does, it won't make a difference, it just gives politicians cover for a short time till the sheep wake up.
