Strangely enough, our local grocery store is hiring up to 98 people and doing on the spot hiring. I don't know why.
Goodbye, halcyon days...

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another theory mentioned, which states that this has already happened.

I think it depends on the store chain. Our Walmart was wiped out over the weekend and still have a number of empty shelves - why? Because everyone shopped at once and the chain wasn't prepared for such large runs on certain items.

On the other hand, our Ingles is perfectly stocked.

It could be because they are preparing for really long shopping lines or something. I am not sure.

Correct! As a farmer/rancher who spent 46+ years milking cows and goats it takes a long, long time to increase supply for milk.

Cows need to be at least 18 months old before being bred to produce a calf. That takes 9 full months, then the milk comes. Most dairy cows can produce for up to a year IF well cared for . They are usually rebred during that time of milking, given a short vaca, then drop another calf and on and on. If a dairy farmer is a good shepherd of his herd he will try to give each cow at least two to three months of rest, meaning NO milking during the last two to three months before another calf is born. After the first three to four months the cow will start to drop in production and as the calf would have started eating grass or hay on it's own this is nature taking care of the cow and letting her rest and recoup.

It is five months for a goat and sheep from breeding to kidding or lambing. Same thing for these livestock.

Chickens are a whole different story but it takes time to raise them up and for them to start to lay.

Even IF they started today none of the farmers and ranchers could help fill the void of lack of food for nearly 6 months to a year or more.

Hi all

I've been an avid lurker on GLP for almost 10 years and finally decided to upgrade to a full membership to overcome bans. The info on this website related to COVID is unmatched

I run the Grocery department here in New Mexico at Target, and have been working retail for over 6 years.

I have never seen anything like this before. It's getting worse as the days pass too. It all started last week on friday, when they shut the schools down in New Mexico. We got stampeded, they bought everything I had.

And we're not getting more.

Sure, we get trucks in, but maybe only 1% of what was sold.

As soon as more product comes in, it's gone faster then you can blink.

We're not getting nearly enough replenishment, and more and more things sell out and more and more empty shelves are appearing.

We have absolutely no more water either

My frozen food is completely drained, literally. Not a waffle, frozen hamburger, chicken, fish in sight.

My backstock is completely gone. i have nothing to work out from the back onto the shelves.

This is a major crisis and will only get worse.

There will be NO uptick in the amount of trucks we get per week either.

We've been out of eggs since last week and they haven't sent more.

I assume this will only get worse as time passes and more and more states lockdown.

Peoples shopping mentality has shifted from a daily/weekly buying to just outright hoarding. Due to this, many many many things are selling out FAR quicker than we can get more in.

I've talked to my vendors as well, since they travel to more than just one store. They said its the same story everywhere they go.

I hope you have stocked up fellas, this can only get worse. If you haven't stocked up, and you run across food/water, STOCK UP.

Thank you for all you do guys, this is my contribution back to you.

I am in the SW part of NM and all the ranchers and farmers here have been in the fields planting for nearly a month or more already. That is here.

In other areas of the US they are just starting to thaw out, if they are lucky. Some are getting lots of rain so that means no planting.

This all takes time and mother nature to go along with the program. No rancher or farmer is so stupid as to think it will all be good to go the whole growing season. Crap always happens … they do not control the weather!!

Last year was a very wet year and some farmers and ranchers had to take a total loss for the whole year.

For us people who garden … we are no different than our fellow farmers and ranchers. We plant and we pray it all will come up. We fight the critters, we fight thieves, we fight mother nature for our crops … for our food.

This year … it maybe we are fighting for the only food we will get to eat. Who knows! But farming, ranching, gardening is not for the weak and faint of heart.

I was NOT saying this would go on and on … the panic buying of just milk but was trying to explain WHY an increase in production of ALL milk products could NOT be done overnight or within a few weeks or even months. Period!

Like I said on the the main CV thread, PLANT something. Anything edible.

I just put in another order to Park Seed. Most of the seed houses still have stock.

I found cucuzzi squash seeds at a company called Westwind a few days ago.

When I was a teenager, my father had some pine forested land. I spent the summer cutting pine trees and clearing the land.

Then, Pop, planted a small garden. He had been given some seeds for cucuzzi by some Italian friends.

That stuff took off like Jack's beanstalk. We measured vines that grew 4 feet in a day. It climbed 40 feet up the pine trees surrounding the garden.

Pop took a wheel barrow load of cucuzzi squash to his customers to give away every day for over a month. We ate that squash for months. I think he only had six seeds or so.

It is time to plant NOW. Even if it seems silly or futile, food security is all important.

Go online and buy SEEDS now.

Some critters reproduce rapidly and breed early.

Pigs, of course. They can actually eat grass and human waste and get most of their nutrition. Numbers can be increased rapidly.

Rabbits. I have told the story of the German lady who, as a little girl, survived in a bombed out basement for months raising rabbits and feeding them leaves from the surrounding forest. Start with two rabbits now and have about 50 in a year.

Quail. Grow up fast and start laying fast. Just takes more eggs to make breakfast.

Need a central gov database, to have shops link with to ration food etc. Because some people go to many shops and frequently. Limiting per transaction isnt enough. A central database can make it fairer for all people and harder for a small % to hoard.

I want to make it very clear that I have ALWAYS believed the Corona Virus itself was nothing more than a SCAM. A real SEASONAL FLU virus but the reaction is completely and insanely overblown and all the experts are outright LYING. We can speculate why but that's not my point here.

My point is that I am in Eastern Mass and I am seeing the SAME THINGS THE OP IS SAYING IN ALL OUR SUPERMARKETS and even the convenience stores. Almost everything is out, has been for the past 3 days or so and is not being re-stocked. I have never seen anything like this and I am nearing 65.

I personally think it will get worse and stay this way for a while. I stocked up as much as possible and I don't blame others for doing the same. I have absolutely NO CONFIDENCE in this government at all - on ANY level, including Trump and I think people have to take care of themselves and their families.

I do NOT blame anyone for "hoarding". It is the only sensible thing to do as long as you are actually going to use what you buy and not re-sell it for profit.

Exact same (crazy) situation during the great .22LR ammunition famine of the Obama years. !

People were panic hoarding .22LR ammunition. No ammunition was seen on the shelves for months. People were calling their friends who worked at Walmart and showed up to meet the trucks. Folks were selling .22lr ammunition online for outrageous gouged prices.

Eventually it settled down.
