FOOD SHORTAGES (must read)
Hi all

I've been an avid lurker on GLP for almost 10 years and finally decided to upgrade to a full membership to overcome bans. The info on this website related to COVID is unmatched

I run the Grocery department here in New Mexico at Target, and have been working retail for over 6 years.

I have never seen anything like this before. It's getting worse as the days pass too. It all started last week on friday, when they shut the schools down in New Mexico. We got stampeded, they bought everything I had.

And we're not getting more.

Sure, we get trucks in, but maybe only 1% of what was sold.

As soon as more product comes in, it's gone faster then you can blink.

We're not getting nearly enough replenishment, and more and more things sell out and more and more empty shelves are appearing.

We have absolutely no more water either

My frozen food is completely drained, literally. Not a waffle, frozen hamburger, chicken, fish in sight.

My backstock is completely gone. i have nothing to work out from the back onto the shelves.

This is a major crisis and will only get worse.

There will be NO uptick in the amount of trucks we get per week either.

We've been out of eggs since last week and they haven't sent more.

I assume this will only get worse as time passes and more and more states lockdown.

Peoples shopping mentality has shifted from a daily/weekly buying to just outright hoarding. Due to this, many many many things are selling out FAR quicker than we can get more in.

I've talked to my vendors as well, since they travel to more than just one store. They said its the same story everywhere they go.

I hope you have stocked up fellas, this can only get worse. If you haven't stocked up, and you run across food/water, STOCK UP.

Thank you for all you do guys, this is my contribution back to you.

I think it depends on the store chain. Our Walmart was wiped out over the weekend and still have a number of empty shelves - why? Because everyone shopped at once and the chain wasn't prepared for such large runs on certain items.

On the other hand, our Ingles is perfectly stocked.

Many stores in my area are cleared out, and there hasn't even been a half dozen cases of the virus here.

Staffing and re-supply is set for a standard flow pattern. If there is too little procurement, there is loss for the store. If there is a surge like this, there just isn't the infrastructure running to keep up.

Remember the .22LR shortage of 2013 after Sandy Hook? Same-O.

After everyone gets their piles to the ceiling, they'll stop then eventually throw it all out because some of it will not be stored properly (cool, dry, dark) and "taste funny".

Re: FOOD SHORTAGES (must read)
just one question...

is the net incoming stock

1) higher
2) lower
3) the same

as your pre-virus experience?

in other words, are the shortages purely from excessive demand?

or are you receiving less stuff, too?

Thanks for the post...

I put this in the grocery store thread but will add this here: I talked to our grocery store manager to day. I'm PNW .It is a Safe Way sized store. It has a deli and bakery and pharmacy. The manger said there is food loaded and ready to roll but they don't have drivers. Surge in demand and they can't keep up and the drivers run out of hrs. These regulations need to go and they need to pay double time O.T. Additionally ,he said more food in the system because all the schools are closed. I also heard schools won't reopen until next year !RagnorTHKN

That's funny my wife works at a MAJOR FOOD retailer and they get trucks in EVERYDAY and the shelves are not full, but they have plenty of food. You may have to take whats there, but it's there.

Target isn't exactly that high on the "retail food chain" either...it's hard and softgoods store.
