Re: SO YOU THINK ANYONE WHO HASN’T PREPPED IS JUST STUPID?
Sure, so all of my sacrifices, living in a van for 2 years, saving and saving and saving to purchase an RV, tirelessly cutting expenses and luxuries out of my life in order to save up and prepare, that CAN'T be done my ANYBODY?! No, I refuse to believe that.

The CHOICES that these people made PREVENTED them from PREPPING. They laughed at preppers, scoffed at those of us who forego home internet, phone, cable, nights out at the bar, restaurants, shop for groceries at the discount store, cook most of our meals from scratch, fix EVERYTHING rather than buying new... I can go on and on about all the choice I made so that I could better prepare for the inevitable.

Maybe we don't call them stupid, but certainly short sighted and you dismissing their behavior as acceptable is terrible. No, their behavior was NOT acceptable. BUT they made their choices, just like I made mine and they MUST live with their choices, just as I must live with mine. It just turns out that the choices I made were better. I did a risk/benefit analysis and came to the conclusions that I can ALWAYS eat food... I WILL use up medications, 1st aid is WAY cheaper than the urgent car clinic, fish antibiotics are the same as human antibiotics and the 60 day supply I got for $60 is WAY WAY cheaper than the 6 doctors visits it would usually require to obtain said antibiotic supply.

This "Woe is them" attitude needs to stop. It's what put them in this situation in the first place. Never having to take responsibility for their own lives or the lives of their loved ones. It's time to buck up or perish.

I am poor. I prepped, but now I'm out of money and a job.

I've got 7 people in my household. Out of the 4 adults, only one has a job now. The supplies wont last forever, but hopefully will get us through to the growing season.

I know that still I am more fortunate than some. We have chickens, 3 baby ducks, a pregnant goat and a well.

I confess, I am worried about this coming winter.
 Quoting: Fortunabeargirl

There is a lot you can do now. You are in pretty good shape, and if you put away food this summer and fall, you should be fine.

There are videos on Youtube with instructions on a vegetable growing technique that uses 5 gallon buckets to grow substantial vegetables. Using this technique, no soil preparation or raised beds is necessary. I will be doing this to expand my garden space. Potatoes from a 5 pound bag will give you potato seed for about a hundred pounds of potatoes. 5 pound bags of potatoes are pretty cheap, at least around here.

If you already have chickens, you can hatch eggs and raise a flock for meat or eggs through the winter. Eggs will store well for months, if stored properly. You can start storing eggs late in the summer and into the fall. Again, there are a lot of videos on how to properly handle and store your eggs. You can also freeze eggs by whipping them up and putting them in ice cube trays to freeze, then when frozen, bag them up.

If you start right now to increase your flock, you can be also be selling eggs by this summer. You probably won't be a real flush selling eggs, but it could provide you with $$ to buy things you can't produce yourself.

I have read that the grocery stores are hiring so they have staff for stocking and delivery. Maybe one of your unemployed people could check on that.

Keep in mind that old saying, "God helps them who help themselves." hf

Re: SO YOU THINK ANYONE WHO HASN’T PREPPED IS JUST STUPID?
Exactly.

Just a few months back middle class knee grows bought the rental house, (which was on a few acres,) we had lived in for waaaaay over a decade. These knee grows ALREADY had houses to live in and they did it for spite. We lost all our livestock and farm land, which was enough to maintain our family off grid. That forced move financially destroyed us. We should have fought back and defended our claim to that house and land the natural God given way, but being the push over good christians that these churches out here tell us to be, we obeyed our armed knee grow dictators just to keep the peace. We were then pushed to live in working class kneegroville where rent is dirt cheap and where there is no accessible farm land, just a bunch of knee grow consumers and mentally challenged people and don't forget the slave drivers promoting foreign manufacturing and working poor who work just to buy shit products from china and get their hair braided.

The virus is multiculturalism. Knee grows gonna knee grow with the end result being working class whites who prepped but the knee grow took it because finance companies gave them permission by financing their knee grow selves.

Ignorant and stupid are 2 different things. We already knew that many were not "awake" (damn cliche' term) prior to this happening. Now, the news is coming at us fast and furious style, and many are still not getting it. Rather than judging people for not being prepared, how about we help to explain it to the people who don't get it? Many will need to be spoon fed the info, because they will go into hyper-overload if we don't. Hopefully, it will help to save a few and get them to understand the seriousness and need to prepare. Anyone who is now a prepper, wasn't always, either. That is where the ignorant are now. Patience and guidance will go much farther in helping them, than putting them down for not being prepped. hf

Ya' gotta' know that as I write this the Mormons are alternately chuckling quietly among themselves or trying to figure out how they can suck in all these newly-born preppers.

And frankly -as crazy as they sound- my own planet is starting to sound pretty good about now.

Ignorant is more like it. I know many very smart people that still haven't prepped.

Re: SO YOU THINK ANYONE WHO HASN’T PREPPED IS JUST STUPID?
I have seen way so many comments and threads on GLP about how stupid people are for not prepping and that it’s their own fault if they don’t have enough to get through a crisis. They should have planned better, or they didn’t know how to handle money, and on and on…

I spent almost 8 years working for one of the largest storable food and emergency preparedness companies you have no doubt heard about, and I can tell you first hand that:

Most families are just getting by and MIGHT have a months worth of savings if they are lucky.

People WANT to prep but are extremely limited and have to choose what they can afford at that moment.

Every day you are served by people who can’t prep and every day you expect them to proved food, and other services to YOU so you can. Let’s list a few:

Restaurant staff like waiters and waitresses, cooks and hosts. Dishwashers too. Sandwich shop employees like Subway and all fast food workers.
Hotel staff like from the front desk to the maids who clean your room to the laundry department who handles your nasty lines when you are done with them.
Cashiers who have to listen to you complain or handle and touch the same shit a bunch of other people touched and place it in a bag for you.

Landscaping and lawncare crews who mow your yard and trim, and weedeat for you.

Car wash people who work their ass off to clean YOUR dirty ass car.

Construction workers who sweat balls working to build and repair houses and businesses everywhere. This includes roofers who sweat nails in the summer.

Trash collectors - Oh here is my pet peeve…these guys are up and down, on the truck and off the truck in between hoisting your nasty ass trash cans into the trash muncher machine, in sweltering heat, storms, sleet rain and ice cold winter. They don’t get paid near enough.

Pool techs who keep your pool sparking so you can soak your ass in the crystal clear water and relax.

Customer service people from banks, hotels, car dealerships cell phone service, utility companies, retail store of every kind, do you think they can afford to save three to 6 months worth of savings for hard times?

That’s enough for now. Use your brain and THINK for one minute not EVERYONE is in a position to be ready for these tough times, so be easy on them. Share if you can and don’t belittle others because they are material poor. They have lives and families too.

Both my parents worked in the hospitality industry for most of their lives and died with nothing in the bank and nothing to account for it materially. That’s the way the high majority of us are going to die too. But we still serve each other the best we can.

I don't buy your argument. The people you speak of have a $ 1000 I Phone, I have a free T-Mobile phone and pay $40/mo for service. They are probably also paying at least $ 100 for cable, I have an over the air antenna. The women probably get their hair & nail done ($100+/mo). They also have a $300+/mo car payment. I have a 2004 Toyota Avalon I paid $ 6500 for, and is now paid off. I live in a mobile home, my payment was $ 375 before I paid it off in 3 years. I eat lots if chicken $ 1.99/lb in family pack at Kroger. I shop at Aldi and Lidl.

It's all about priorities. What more important, Posting a selfie with your $ 1000 Iphone, getting your nails done or having Cable and a $ 300+ car payment??

Even poor people can save a little and get a stash of emergency food.

There's nothing wrong with being judgemental or discriminating because those synonyms are also a part of that "Natural Law" I mentioned before. Even the lowest specie of animal recognizes danger when it presents itself and immediately fight or flee. But -at the risk of offending others- the human race has lost that most valuable of all survival skills and the worst offenders are the ones who are today the most worried.

Yep, OP! Being impoverished is the single greatest reason why most people will never get "prepared" like the more rich people out there. The Illuminati have known precisely what they are doing by forcibly turning over half of Americans into perpetual needy people via permanent poverty.

So many GLPers put down the poor as equally stupidity or worse because the poor can never gain any real money. The horrifying reality of it is the poor can never stop being poor for a myriad of reasons. One reason being the ultra cheap goods that come in from China. You need something right then and there and do not have the time to save up a ton of money for the actual high quality stuff that usually runs into the twenty or so dollars range. If you think twenty or so dollars is nothing then you are obviously a rich individual. I have been living such a destitute lifestyle myself that I have personally have seen my mother spend six (yes, very seriously) months straight saving up to get a small-ish chest freezer only to be set back more than two years straight because one of my sisters at the time was a truancy whore. By the time the Truancy Court got involved my mother had to spend all of the monies she had saved up for said chest freezer and then some more for the Court costs and to pay our high school because my sister just was MIA most of the time.

Another reason being so many essentials in America are actually fairly easily gotten up front, but it is the monthly payments at exorbitant interest rates that ruin so many poor people's lives and credit ratings. For a poor individual their lives may be going well or better at that particular moment enabling them to get another life's essential whatever that may be for that poor individual at that particular moment in time. Then something goes wrong in their lives such as they get a flat tire or something seemingly not that bad. Unfortunately for them they do not have the immediate funds in their bank account or in their wallet to get a new (used) tire. So one must go to one of those payday loan sharks out of sheer desperation. I have personally seen my parents' lives very quickly spiral out of control for years at a time because of that insanity.

So many people spit upon, hate, and even ruthlessly injure or kill the poor here in America. Why? Because the MSM tells them to do so in one form or another, and even Hollywood too. So many people view the poor as unable to do their own finances because they are too stupid to do so. In reality, I have seen far more poor people being much more capable than the rich people to handle their own finances. It is because America really is set up to devastate the poor class of America. Nearly everything in America that is paid for and maintained one way or another is possible because of the constant victimization of the poor. Then hundreds of millions of Americans have the blind audacity to put constantly put down the poor, "Why can't you be rich like me?!" and countless other utterly maddening stupid things.

Rest assured... in the long run it will be the poor people who will come out on top.
 Quoting: darkwolf007

Yes, the arrogance of some people is actually heartbreaking. It is very easy to say, "But you can save this, you can do that......." Everyone's situation is different. In many ways, once they have paid their mortgage or rent, car payment, utilities, bought groceries, gas and other necessities, their paycheck is almost spent. It's not cut and dried. Add in medical bills, insurance, taxes, etc. A checking account can be be emptied very quickly on just the basics of life.

GLP is strictly Zero compassion or decency. The cruel nature of the comments reminds me to stop waisting time here. Dark trolling successful.

There is a world of kindness out there and people are helping each other. Have seen way more of humanities amazingness recently than in years.

From the comments here, I would not expect to see any of you there... helping others. Just mean spirited trolls - that really seem to dislike their fellow brothers and sisters in humanity.

Well, off to go be kind - enjoy your troll stations.

YES, they ARE stupid. People make choices what to do with their money. "POOR" people never seem to have enough for rent, but they always seem to have enough for drugs, booze, cigs, and other distractions.

Fuck your attitude. IT IS THEIR FAULT. Prepping costs very little and is something that can be done over time.

Noodles, rice and peanut butter. All cheap and you can survive on it.

Potatoes also. They have vitamin c in them and are easy to grow. They can be grown in a garbage can. Add in some milk or some animal protein for b12

It's hard not to pin the stupid label on those that have been warned and warned and warned again to prep. It's better to be prepared and not need than need and not be prepared.

That said, it's all part of human nature to prepare or not to prepare and this is why.

All Truths Pass-Through 3 Stages

1. It is ridiculed
2. It is violently opposed
3. It is accepted as self-evident

There are so many people..... still stuck on 1. & 2. and can't seem to get to 3. However unfortunate, that is human nature. There's an adjustment period for each of us when we're faced with something that can potentially disrupt our personal lives. For some, that adjustment is short, for some, it takes longer and for others, there is no amount of time where they will make it to 3. no matter what.

That's just the way it is.

I make minimum wage and I was able to drop a couple hundred dollars on food over the last two weeks.

You can do it if you shop smartly

Go to the fucking dollar store and buy all of their dollar store spam. It’s not about fine dining, it’s about having something....ANYTHING... to eat.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77668913

On Disability get $900 a month and I was prepared. You can easily get a months worth of food for under $15 per person. 5 lb bag of lentils for $6, 5 lb bag of rice $3 and a bottle of oil/fat $5. And than get in the habit of having an extra of everything, once you get low buy another. For instance you always have two things of TP, once the one you are using gets low you buy another, this way you always have backup. It's not that hard to be prepared for a month of disruption.

No, just did not understand the signs.

I tried to people a month ago it was coming. And then two weeks ago I was telling people they better get to the store if they want to buy anything. And I had people arguing with me at work about it, 'oh it's not going to get like that, hoarding is crazy, they'll never shut down the schools'. Now those people are scrambling trying to get toilet paper while we're all out of work.

I think it's going to work out alright and you'll be ok well before winter.

I've turned the corner since Trump and all have gotten serious about it and particularly since they've pushed the drug which seems to lessen the severity.

If those measures (and more to come) work, I think we'll eventually - say within a couple of months - be in a mode where all but the elderly and those younger who have certain health problems (e.g, cancer, obesity, etc.) will be moving back to business as usual, so things get back up and running pretty well.

Hang in there and if any in your household have compromised health, they should take extra precautions to avoid exposure.

Beans cost about 1.99 per pound. Rice is even cheaper.

How about.... Each week, with your ebt, instead of buying name brand cereal, but the generic. Spend the difference on some beans.

So, yeah, they're just stupid.

Re: SO YOU THINK ANYONE WHO HASN’T PREPPED IS JUST STUPID?
Prepping is so cheap that if you can buy beer and smokes, you could have prepped.

Not from a "prepping company" that sells at 15X over price, but there's no one that could not buy extra pasta, bulk bags of flour or whatever for $10 a month.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76703538

Exactly.

These people who are "poor" and "just getting by" seem to spend a lot of money every month on beer, cigs, tattoos and smartphones.

Then look at what they put in the shopping cart. Is it bags of rice, beans, fresh produce, dry noodles etc? Or is it frozen pizza and microwave dinners?

And how many kids do these "poor" people have? Reproduction is a choice just like any other. And just like owning a car, you have cost of upkeep that comes with deciding to make that choice. You shouldn't have kids if you can't afford to provide them a decent standard of living and that includes being able to provide for them during a downturn or temporary crisis of some kind.

It's really a burr under my saddle when people blunder through life making one piss-poor decision after another and then want someone else to take on responsibility for the natural consequences of those poor choices.

Yes, there really are some situations where people are without, and poor, through no fault of their own. From what I've observed in life (having been there myself) they make up a single-digit percentage of the total number of folks walking around with their hand out any time times get tough.

Anyone who is being honest is aware of this fact and denying it makes you look like you're stupid or lying.

not stupid at all - not everyone learns like us in GLP, and not everyone can push 600 or 800 euros like I did in Jan and Feb to prep myself, my family and some relatives.
