Re: SO YOU THINK ANYONE WHO HASN’T PREPPED IS JUST STUPID?
I have seen way so many comments and threads on GLP about how stupid people are for not prepping and that it’s their own fault if they don’t have enough to get through a crisis. They should have planned better, or they didn’t know how to handle money, and on and on…

I spent almost 8 years working for one of the largest storable food and emergency preparedness companies you have no doubt heard about, and I can tell you first hand that:

Most families are just getting by and MIGHT have a months worth of savings if they are lucky.

People WANT to prep but are extremely limited and have to choose what they can afford at that moment.

Every day you are served by people who can’t prep and every day you expect them to proved food, and other services to YOU so you can. Let’s list a few:

Restaurant staff like waiters and waitresses, cooks and hosts. Dishwashers too. Sandwich shop employees like Subway and all fast food workers.
Hotel staff like from the front desk to the maids who clean your room to the laundry department who handles your nasty lines when you are done with them.
Cashiers who have to listen to you complain or handle and touch the same shit a bunch of other people touched and place it in a bag for you.

Landscaping and lawncare crews who mow your yard and trim, and weedeat for you.

Car wash people who work their ass off to clean YOUR dirty ass car.

Construction workers who sweat balls working to build and repair houses and businesses everywhere. This includes roofers who sweat nails in the summer.

Trash collectors - Oh here is my pet peeve…these guys are up and down, on the truck and off the truck in between hoisting your nasty ass trash cans into the trash muncher machine, in sweltering heat, storms, sleet rain and ice cold winter. They don’t get paid near enough.

Pool techs who keep your pool sparking so you can soak your ass in the crystal clear water and relax.

Customer service people from banks, hotels, car dealerships cell phone service, utility companies, retail store of every kind, do you think they can afford to save three to 6 months worth of savings for hard times?

That’s enough for now. Use your brain and THINK for one minute not EVERYONE is in a position to be ready for these tough times, so be easy on them. Share if you can and don’t belittle others because they are material poor. They have lives and families too.

Both my parents worked in the hospitality industry for most of their lives and died with nothing in the bank and nothing to account for it materially. That’s the way the high majority of us are going to die too. But we still serve each other the best we can.

Scary times. I found a website called nuts.com. Bulk trail mix. I bought 75 lbs of different types of trail mix. It's perfect food, filling and will last. Not cheap, but not unaffordable. The said my order would be shipped by the 24th. So I'm assuming they have stock. Good luck fellow foragers.

Re: SO YOU THINK ANYONE WHO HASN’T PREPPED IS JUST STUPID?
In my 20s I worked a low end tech job and barely covered my basics and had a strict dollar limit at the grocery store. At any time a car repair bill or tires could have destroyed me. I had no family to count on or anyone I could borrow money from in a pinch. So I understand not having money to prep.

Now
In my 40s Im much better off financially and I keep extra of stuff in case of a disruption. Katrina was a major eye opener that the govt is not prepared for disasters. Also I remember being on GLP at this time and it was very much like anarchy. People killed each other and many were never uncovered. Neighborhoods fought each other, people were left to die, etc.

So if you have the means and didn't prepare, yes you are stupid. Our supply chains are very fragile

I think modern society rewards mediocrity and we should stop throwing handouts at people who make irresponsible choices in life, whether it's the airline company that squandered it's money buying back it's stock, or the person with an attitude that life is too short to be hoarding, they are just going to enjoy themselves, so they blow 10% of their paycheck buying overpriced drinks in the sports bar every week, neither having bothered to save or prepare for a rainy day, which used to be taught back in the day.

It takes what... $250 tops to stockpile some beans, peanut butter, oats, vegetable oil? I get most people don't like to cook or eat bland foods and want to eat out 3 days a week now... we live in a society where people are not used to not having exactly what they want, when they want, and it's made them soft.

You made the decision to do that. You suffer the consequences. Experience is a good learning tool. They won't learn their lesson if someone just bails them out.

There are some who just cannot. But for the most part it comes done to prioroties. I had a a lot jobs you listed and i still prepped. Guess what I also never had cool rims on my '67 volkswagon or a cool ghetto boom box, or the latest iphone. A lot of the people you listed do. So sorry but boohoo.

I was also prepared by good parenting that gave me a realistic understanding of life and survival.

My father was a cruel man, but he did teach me some lessons that are the exact opposite of what kids are told now. Many of these seems cold but are often true.

- Always have a backup plan. Society doesn't care if your homeless and destitute and in many ways prefers you this way. Always have a little bit of savings for an emergency. (easier said than done)

- When hard times come you won't be able to count on friends. Friends are good times accessories.

- Believe nothing that you hear and only half of what you see.

- Accept everything for face value only.

YES, they ARE stupid. People make choices what to do with their money. "POOR" people never seem to have enough for rent, but they always seem to have enough for drugs, booze, cigs, and other distractions.

Fuck your attitude. IT IS THEIR FAULT. Prepping costs very little and is something that can be done over time.

Rice at Walmart before the panic was $8.50 for 20 pounds

30 pounds of rice has enough calories to sustain an adult for 1 month

Total price per adult to just survive for a month $12.75

Again, the lack of prepping is not because people don't have money. It's because they just don't even think about it or are just happy in their ignorant bliss.

Who's throwing a pity party? This is not about me! I am not posting this on behalf of myself in any way shape or form. I have food stocks. I have all the stock I need. I might not have a lot of cash, but I have plenty of food, guns, ammo, medical supplies, camping and cooking utensils, oil, condiments, coffee, and the works. I'm fine.

What I don't get is why people seem to quickly judge another situation without knowing their circumstances.

There is no doubt there are irresponsible people who have squandered their time and money. But there are also many circumstances where responsible people have worked hard and still can't seem to get ahead.

Right on target OP. We got an early start beginning with Y2K... so have been doing this for years. Three of our adult children are out of work, laid off, disabled and the youngest works for minimum wage at Safeway. I send food boxes to our disable son along with pre-paid cards to get food from across the street where he lives.

Most people don't want to live off their stored food because they have no clue how to make it taste good. That in itself is an art. I don't even like our dehydrated food Alpine meals.

Fresh is best. So last November we invested in a Tower Garden with a monthly payment plant so we could afford to pay for it. It is loaded with fresh veggies including cucumbers, lettuce, kale, herbs, basil, dill, bell peppers, Swiss chard, etc. And we have a stock pile of non-GMO seeds.

Since winter lasts about 6 months here with nights generally below freezing our growing cycle is short. The deer go after food outside all year round the the grasshopper in summer. The berries are planted down by the creek so do better with it's little fence protecting it. However, the morale mushrooms will be popping up soon as the snow line recedes. Looking forward to that.

Meanwhile, we'll continue to help our off-spring.
The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is.

Stupid is a strong word. Though there is no shortage of stupid in our country, I wouldn't say everyone who failed to prepare fits the bill.

I was dirt poor for a great many years, but I was always prepared for a disaster situation. Saved my ass once after a hurricane and once after a flood.

People don't realize that you don't have to prep all at once. Every time you shop for groceries, pick up a $1 bag of rice and/or a $2 bag of beans. Throw them in the cupboard and forget about it. That shit keeps forever and stacks up quickly.
I did it. I did it on purpose. And I'll do it again.

Re: SO YOU THINK ANYONE WHO HASN’T PREPPED IS JUST STUPID?
I could make so many arguments with some of you who have responded with short-sighted quips about how YOU managed to
gather food and set it aside even while working a minimum wage job, but I'll save it. I will say: "GREAT That's all awesome and stuff and very happy you could!" But what were or are the circumstances that allowed for that? Were you living with others and sharing household costs? Or were you trying to pay rent, power bill, gas bill, trash and water bill, phone bill, car insurance and still buy food, cleaning supplies, hygene products, gas and other maintenance for your car, and had money left over?

Minimum wage in Florid is 8.43 an hour. 40 hours a week is 339.90 before taxes. Tell me please, how can anyone live on that? Unless they are sharing accommodations and expenses or living with their parents.

I agree with all of you who say we should have prepped a long time ago, that each and every one of us should had made it a point to have provisions on hand in the event of an emergency. Did I not say I worked for an emergency preparedness company? I counseled people on this every single day. I agree with you, and I also agree that there are stupid people out there who turn a deaf ear and choose other interests instead.

There are some people who simply can't get ahead for the life of them. Who are you to judge that? Who are you to know their circumstances? Just because you drive through a neighborhood and you see a $55,000 car parked in front of a mobile home doesn't mean you know everything about that person. Yeah, it looks shady as hell on the outside but you don't really know the circumstances. They might have a food stask andwould share it with you if need be. Nor do you know the circumstances of the Walmart greeter who smiles at you when you come through the doors. But you are so quick to judge.

All I'm saying is be thoughtful and who you attack on this forum because you don't know their circumstances. There are some mighty fine people on this forum with good hearts and good souls.

I make minimum wage and I was able to drop a couple hundred dollars on food over the last two weeks.

You can do it if you shop smartly

Go to the fucking dollar store and buy all of their dollar store spam. It’s not about fine dining, it’s about having something....ANYTHING... to eat.

Buying a little bit at a time and putting it away is how I had to do it for a long long time. I've been dirt poor too, but that little bit I had put away has pulled me through. I've always had some kind of food stash and a few bills stuck away in a book, and there are 3 times in my life that I've had to get by on my stash.

I still buy extra when I shop. When I hear that hard times have gone extinct, I'll stop.

You are wise as you completely see the entire picture. It's not about smart, stupid or intelligent, although some of the comments toward others on this forum have leaned in that direction and then quite cruel. I've been on this forum since 2004 and lately some of the remarks are just uncalled for.

Congrats on the Tower Garden! I have one myself and they are great for growing herbs, lettuce, and smaller short rooted veggies! Nice to hear yours is working out great!

oh yes, and as for making the dehydrated food taste great, there are a number of ways to do that! Adding canned meats, and veggies and getting creative goes a long way! Glad to see you figured all that out!

Notice how nearly everyone told you to shove it up your ass and didn't come to your pitty party?

People have been judging other people since time began, Crimson Bleu. Been doing it before now, and will continue long time ahead. That's their lesson to learn. You've already learned it.

The problem is that these people do work hard, but then go spend their money on useless shit.

Expensive phones, $200 headphones, have several TVs, tablets, brand name clothes, etc.

Instead, you can cut it down to the minimum and probably save an extra $200 per month.

Plus, you can go online and learn a new skill, then use that to make additional money.

I worked in a call centre making shit money, but spent several years learning to be a copywriter and building a business.

I went from charging $5 for two hour's work to getting sometimes $100 for one hour of work.

Also got a personal training certificate to make additional funds on the side. There is no excuse with the combination of free learning and the booming economy that anybody with half a brain should be living in extreme poverty.

I don't have much money, but I have food put away thanks to GLP!

I started to get things on sale & use coupons. Even if I just bought one thing a week, it adds up.

My grocery store would have 5lb bags of rice on sale for $3 sometimes. I have lots of cans of beans from sales plus dry beans. I also have boxes of cereal for the little one.
